01:13And these very good dogs and the people making it easier to find their forever homes.
01:21This is NBC Nightly News with Hallie Jackson.
01:27Good evening.
01:28We begin tonight with the race for the White House that is clearly changed compared to
01:31just a month ago and clearly competitive with Democrats hoping the week of primetime programming
01:37kicking off tomorrow in Chicago keeps momentum moving for Vice President Kamala Harris.
01:42New polling shows her gaining ground on former President Trump nationally and in key swing
01:48states.
01:49In Chicago, the convention stage now set and so are the barricades as police outside brace
01:54for protests.
01:55But before Illinois comes Pennsylvania with Harris and her running mate on a bus tour
02:00to rally supporters as Mr. Trump gets ready to counter program with the busiest week of
02:05his campaign so far.
02:06We've got it covered tonight, starting with Aaron Gilchrist on the road with the Harris
02:10campaign.
02:13Tonight the Democratic presidential ticket on the road in battleground Pennsylvania.
02:18Vice President Kamala Harris, Governor Tim Walz and their spouses rolling out their new
02:22campaign bus in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, stopping first at a phone bank.
02:28The team making stops in politically opposite counties, Allegheny, union rich and solidly
02:33blue and Beaver, a blue collar county that former President Trump won in 2016 and 2020.
02:41The Harris campaign believes it can make some inroads here as a new Washington Post, ABC,
02:46Ipsos national poll of registered voters shows Harris with a four point lead over Trump,
02:51besting Biden's position in the same poll last month.
02:54When you know what you stand for, you know what to fight for.
02:57As Harris tries to promote policy ideas just a day before the Democratic convention starts.
03:02When you stand for working people, you fight for working people.
03:05When you stand for freedom, whether it be to make decisions about your own body or love
03:09who you love, you fight for those things.
03:12Trump also in Pennsylvania Saturday night speaking for more than an hour with a focus
03:17on personal attacks over policy comparisons.
03:20They said, no, her biggest advantage is that she's a beautiful woman.
03:23I'm gone.
03:24Huh?
03:25I never thought of that.
03:28I'm better looking than she is.
03:30Tonight, Trump releasing a plan to barnstorm battleground states each day of the DNC.
03:34This week, Republican South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham on Meet the Press urging him
03:39to focus on policy.
03:41If you have a policy debate for president, he wins.
03:44Donald Trump, the provocateur, the showman may not win this election.
03:50Aaron joins us now from Pittsburgh and Aaron, Pennsylvania is not the only battleground
03:53state getting attention this week.
03:57You're right, Hallie.
03:58Harris will do some campaigning in the next door state of Wisconsin, another battleground
04:04state.
04:05At the same time, former President Trump will be on the trail as well in Michigan, trying
04:09to draw some attention away from the Democratic Convention.
04:12Hallie.
04:13Aaron, thank you.
04:14President Biden, for his part, is fine tuning his keynote speech for tomorrow's opening
04:18night at the DNC.
04:20Monica Alba joins us now with the preview.
04:23So Mon, walk us through it.
04:24Hallie, just a month ago, this convention hall was supposed to be President Biden's
04:29big stage for the week.
04:31And tomorrow night will show just how dramatically everything has changed since he left the race.
04:35Now, the evening is meant in part to be a tribute to the president's leadership with
04:39first lady Jill Biden speaking.
04:41And then in a primetime speech, the president will detail why he thinks Vice President Harris
04:46is best positioned to take on Donald Trump now.
04:49And then he'll pass the torch to her with the two expected to share that major moment
04:53together.
04:54Now, the other big speakers this week will include the Obamas and the Clintons.
04:58Governor Walz will accept the vice presidential nomination on Wednesday, and VP Harris will
05:03have her keynote on Thursday.
05:05Hallie.
05:06Monica Alba, thank you.
05:08And our coverage of the Democratic National Convention kicks off tomorrow at 4 p.m. Eastern
05:13on NBC News Now with special coverage at 10 Eastern right here on NBC.
05:18I'll see you there.
05:19Already in Chicago, protesters are arriving with new concerns about potential clashes
05:24with police.
05:25Maura Barrett is on the ground there.
05:26So Maura, what do you see?
05:28Well, hi.
05:30The first protest of the week is underway behind me.
05:33They're set to start marching here downtown in the next couple of minutes.
05:36And I should note, we're about three miles away from where most of the convention action
05:40is going to be taking.
05:41So it's got a big footprint across the city.
05:44And that's why officials say it's all hands on deck.
05:46But they also say they're ready.
05:53On the eve of the Democratic National Convention's kickoff, protesters already on the streets
05:59of Chicago and even on the river.
06:06Strategizing for a massive ramp up in the days ahead, tens of thousands of protesters
06:10expected to pour into the windy city.
06:13People coming by cars, planes and trains.
06:16They're calling on Democratic leaders to take action on issues from the Israel-Hamas war
06:20to reproductive rights and affordable housing.
06:24Activists like Sherry Honkala traveling in from across the country.
06:28How optimistic are you that your voice will be heard this week?
06:32I'm very optimistic.
06:35We have a shot for somebody to hear us and we're going to take that shot.
06:39The city says it's ready designating protest zones.
06:42The streets in blue just blocks from the convention.
06:46Activists though calling for more space to protest.
06:49We are going to continue to fight up until the step off from the park tomorrow.
06:55In downtown Chicago, businesses already boarded up.
06:58I am hopeful that it's not needed.
07:00They are over prepared and I hope everyone stays safe.
07:04Chicago police on high alert, training hundreds of officers to help pitch in.
07:08Security preps well underway.
07:10The governor today with a warning for protesters.
07:13If there are troublemakers, they're going to get arrested and they're going to get convicted.
07:18Moore is back with us now and we're just learning of new plans for stepped up security, Moore.
07:23Yeah, Hallie, the police that are lining the streets around me received de-escalation training
07:28in the last year.
07:29We're learning.
07:30We've also learned the governor has authorized about 500 National Guard troops on the ground
07:35for added security, Hallie.
07:39Maura Barrett.
07:41Overseas tonight, Secretary of State Tony Blinken arriving in Israel with hopes of kickstarting
07:45new ceasefire talks set to resume in Cairo this week.
07:49Danielle Hamamjin is in Tel Aviv.
07:51So Danielle, what can we expect?
07:53Well, this is Blinken's ninth trip here since October 7th.
07:57And if things go his way this week, it might also be his last before a deal is reached.
08:03Now tomorrow, he'll be meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu, who said today that Israel is standing
08:07firm on its key demands, but is willing to be flexible in other areas.
08:12Hamas, meanwhile, has said basically not so fast.
08:16They say that the proposal that's on the table, that's meant to be bridging the gaps,
08:22does not align with the agreement that they've previously agreed to.
08:27Blinken on Tuesday will be flying off to Egypt, Hallie, where he hopes to close the deal.
08:32Danielle, thank you.
08:34Here at home, we're tracking intense weather across the country with millions at risk tonight
08:38and dramatic new video showing just how dangerous these storm systems can be.
08:43Here's Guadalcanal.
08:45Oh, wow.
08:48A weekend of dangerous weather across the country.
08:52Wind gusts hitting northern Alabama on Saturday, people running for their lives as furniture
08:58and even a bouncy slide blew away.
09:00Oh.
09:01Oh.
09:02And all of a sudden, the wind just came out of nowhere, like sideways.
09:09In Connecticut, torrential rain and flash flooding.
09:12Take a look at this, lightning striking the Seattle Space Needle.
09:16Nationwide, 46 million in the bullseye for more rain, wind, flooding and possible tornadoes
09:22tonight.
09:23Throughout the South, more than 40 million under heat alerts from Arizona to Florida.
09:27This, as reports of approximately 100 spectators getting sick at a Colorado Springs air show
09:33in temperatures over 90 degrees.
09:36And across the East Coast, beaches shutting down as Ernesto, now back as a category one
09:41hurricane, triggers life-threatening rip currents across the Atlantic.
09:46Two drownings in Hilton Head and nearly 30 ocean rescues off the coast of North Carolina.
09:52Oh, my God.
09:54On the Outer Banks, where this house collapsed the other day, portions of that shoreline
09:58now shut down.
10:02Ernesto's hits in Puerto Rico and Bermuda now followed by a massive cleanup.
10:09Most of the damage caused by Hurricane Ernesto affected the power infrastructure, like this
10:14cross arm which came off a utility pole, but is now being repaired.
10:19With flights taking off once again at the International Airport, as this tropical paradise
10:24slowly starts picking up the pieces.
10:26Guadvenegas, NBC News, Bermuda.
10:31Here in Washington, new video appears to show a beating outside of a Shake Shack.
10:34Tonight, the victim is speaking with our George Solis.
10:37A warning.
10:38What you're about to see is disturbing.
10:40Tonight, police are investigating this incident caught on video at a Shake Shack in D.C.'s
10:46DuPont Circle neighborhood Saturday.
10:4828-year-old Christian Dignas says he believes the violence was fueled by hate.
10:52There was a desire to be violent towards me.
10:55D.C. Metro are reviewing video recorded from inside the restaurant.
10:59Christian says it was a kiss with his partner inside the restaurant that prompted a reaction
11:03from an employee, who he claims told them, you can't be doing that here, as the couple
11:08waited for their order.
11:09Like, I didn't want to, you know, take any involvement with it.
11:12Like, I'm just going to wait for my food and get out of here.
11:15My partner got a little bit more upset.
11:17Christian says the worker escorted the pair outside and began to berate them verbally.
11:22The 30-second clip shows a group punching and pushing a man to the ground, who slowly
11:25proceeds to get up.
11:27It ends as police appear to arrive on the scene.
11:29Guys, the police are here.
11:31They all just kind of started attacking me at that point, dragging me back, threw me
11:35on the floor and continuously punching me in my head.
11:38Christian says he has a concussion, bruising and trauma to his leg, head and face.
11:43What's justice going to look like for you and your partner after something so harrowing?
11:46I don't know.
11:47I mean, I just hope, you know, those that, you know, you know, kind of did this are held
11:52accountable.
11:53In a statement to NBC News, Shake Shack says, in part, they are aware of the incident and
11:58suspended the team members involved pending further review.
12:01George Solis, NBC News.
12:04Still ahead tonight, a scary scene at a music festival with part of this Ferris wheel catching
12:09fire.
12:10Plus, a new crackdown on smash and grabs in one state and the new consequences for thieves.
12:18We're back with a pretty scary scene at a music festival.
12:21Look at this.
12:22Part of this Ferris wheel catching on fire.
12:24You see it at the top there in Germany on Saturday.
12:27The ride's operator tells a German news agency no passengers were in the gondola that erupted,
12:32but at least 23 people were hurt.
12:35Police are still trying to figure out what started the fire.
12:38To California and a crackdown on those so-called smash and grabs.
12:41You've seen the video, the swarms of people busting into stores, taking a bunch of stuff.
12:46Now, the state is trying to fight back in what could be a blueprint for the rest of
12:50the country.
12:51Here's Dana Griffin.
12:52An all too familiar scene playing out on surveillance cameras across California.
13:01Smash and grabs were brazen, organized groups of thieves invade a business, destroying protective
13:07casings to steal high value goods and selling them for a profit.
13:12Just late last week, three 7-Eleven stores in Hollywood hit just minutes apart.
13:17But now California is taking action.
13:20That same day, Governor Gavin Newsom signing a new set of laws taking effect this weekend.
13:25Cracking down on retail and car thefts.
13:27They will address the challenges that are well outside the purview of previous initiatives
13:33and laws.
13:34This legislation allows stores to file temporary restraining orders against repeat shoplifters,
13:39requires online marketplaces to collect data from sellers to discourage the resale of stolen
13:44items, and allows law enforcement to combine the dollar amount of thefts from several victims
13:49to impose harsher penalties.
13:51Do you see other states kind of adopting similar laws?
13:56You've absolutely got a movement across the U.S.
13:59Carl Langhorst is a retail theft expert who says this could be a game changer.
14:03You've seen communities start to come together and understand we've got to hold these offenders
14:07accountable.
14:09That could be jail, but quite often it could be also needed drug rehab or mental counseling.
14:16A crackdown on crime hoping to solve a crisis playing out in communities across the country.
14:23Dana Griffin, NBC News.
14:26We're back in a moment with an exclusive inside look at how these U.S. marshals tracked down
14:30hundreds of missing kids.
14:34We're back with an NBC News exclusive and the mission to track down missing kids, which
14:39federal officials say has saved hundreds in just six weeks.
14:43Ben Delaney has an inside look.
14:46The U.S. marshals are known for hunting dangerous fugitives.
14:50But this summer.
14:51U.S. marshals.
14:52Out of the house.
14:53From Florida.
14:54U.S. marshals service.
14:55To North Carolina.
14:57They've been looking for missing kids.
15:00Ready?
15:01I got you.
15:02Operation We Will Find You is a six-week surge by federal, state and local law enforcement
15:07to find missing children across the country.
15:10A lot of these kids, you know, these are kids that have run away.
15:13And they basically act like fugitives.
15:15So we do a lot of the same things that we do to find fugitives to find these kids.
15:19That involves social media.
15:21That involves computers.
15:22That involves old-fashioned police work, knocking on doors, talking to people, talking to friends,
15:27talking to family.
15:28All right.
15:29Copy.
15:3013 miles, 23 minutes.
15:31We got exclusive access to a marshal's task force as they looked for children in New York
15:36City.
15:37Their first stop, the Bronx, to find a missing 13-year-old.
15:41What do we know about her?
15:42Is she at risk?
15:43She's at risk from all the information I've seen coming out of West New York, New Jersey,
15:49potential for sex trafficking.
15:51It's 7.05, and the marshals are at the location.
15:56They surround the area, go in, but no luck.
16:00They're being told that she is not here right now.
16:03She's got a yellow dress on.
16:04She was on the train.
16:05The marshals say if they stay, she won't come back here.
16:09We're leaving some surveillance teams here to watch and see if this girl comes back.
16:14Next, across town, and another missing teen.
16:18It's 10.45, and the U.S. marshals have surrounded an apartment building here in Brooklyn, where
16:23they think a 17-year-old girl is inside who may have been the victim of sex trafficking.
16:28But they need to keep a low profile.
16:30We're just trying to stay out of view, because if they're looking out the windows, then they
16:33see all of us.
16:34So we got to stay out of the way here for a second.
16:37A few minutes later, success.
16:42It's almost 11 a.m., and the marshals think they've recovered the 17-year-old girl they
16:46were looking for here today.
16:48They just put her in that car.
16:50She's off the street, and she's going to be someplace safe.
16:52Over the six weeks of the operation, the U.S. marshals say they found 200 missing children
16:57across the country, including runaways and kids who were abducted.
17:01They really are the forgotten children, and that is the whole purpose behind what we do.
17:07Marshals known for hunting criminals now giving vulnerable kids a second chance.
17:13Ken Delaney in NBC News, New York.
17:17When we come back, there's good news tonight about some very good dogs and the humans helping
17:22them out.
17:33There's good news tonight about man's best friend and the people who step up for them
17:38when they need it most.
17:40The dogs were good again this week.
17:42Here are my top five.
17:43He's the guy behind one of the sweetest sites on social media.
17:47We have Beacon.
17:48He is a four-year-old service dog and one of USA Gymnastics' busiest volunteers.
17:52Matt Nelson started We Rate Dogs back in 2015 as a way to celebrate the pups we love.
17:59When a fire started in the basement of her house, she beat the smoke detectors in alerting
18:03her family.
18:04Since then, the number of his followers has skyrocketed to some 22 million.
18:08Did you ever think it would get this huge?
18:11Absolutely not.
18:12No.
18:13I thought it had potential because cute dogs and the internet go hand in hand.
18:16We were able to sponsor her entire hospitalization.
18:18That success sparking a big idea.
18:20We'd like to give these dogs a chance.
18:23Putting Matt on a mission.
18:24He started a nonprofit called 15 Out of 10, raising money to help dogs with special needs
18:30get adopted into loving homes.
18:32What's so cool about this is the way that you took your social media following and you
18:36turned it into a force for good.
18:38Our mission is to sponsor shelter dogs with medical conditions with the hopes of making
18:42them more adoptable.
18:43It was very satisfying to be able to measure success, no longer as much on likes per post,
18:50but how many dogs we were able to save.
18:52So far, the foundation's raised more than $3 million.
18:55Our foundation was able to cover the medical care of Orca.
18:58Helping cover medical costs for nearly 600 dogs like Orca.
19:03We were able to sponsor the medical care of Rupert.
19:05And this little guy, Rupert, who needs expensive treatment for seizures.
19:10That money made all the difference for David Tracy and his wife, Darian.
19:13Are you ready for a walk?
19:15Who fell head over heels in puppy love with the spunky Maltese mix.
19:20Without the help of the 1510 Foundation, do you think you could have done it on your own?
19:25Probably not.
19:26It's just really, it's pretty pricey.
19:28What makes Rupert so special?
19:29He has, uh, he does this thing we call prancing ponies when he gets excited, where he sticks
19:34his both two front legs out.
19:36Sarah Hamill works with the Austin Humane Society and says the grants they got helped
19:40them find families for 60 dogs.
19:43When we can tell them, hey, this dog had this issue, it already had a surgery, whatever
19:47it may be, that just kind of helps inspire them to go ahead and make the decision to
19:54adopt.
19:55Joy like that?
19:56Priceless.
19:57Creating connections and memories to last a lifetime.
20:02They're just such innocent creatures that want only to love us.
20:06But yeah, I think there's a lot we can learn from dogs.
20:10They live in the moment.
20:11They are full of unconditional love.
20:13And I think that that's something that us as individuals and our society needs more
20:16of.
20:18Some very good pups there too, until September 10th, remember it is clear the shelters month
20:23with NBC Universal locals clear the shelters, adopt and donate campaign happening now.
20:29In 10 years, it's found forever homes for more than a million pets.
20:33That's nightly news for this Sunday.
20:34Lester will be in tomorrow.
20:36I'm Hallie Jackson for all of us here at NBC.
20:39Thanks for watching.
20:40Have a great week.
