00:00A brawl has broken out in the Turkish parliament during a heated debate over an opposition
00:07delegate currently in prison on what are widely considered politically motivated charges.
00:12Footage showed Ahmet Cuk of the Workers' Party of Turkey or TIP being attacked by a lawmaker
00:18from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling AK Party. Cuk had called the AK Party a terrorist
00:25organization. The extraordinary session of the Grand National Assembly was called to
00:30debate the case of Can Atalay who was elected from prison as a parliamentary deputy for
00:35the TIP in last year's election. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison in 2022 for his role
00:42in anti-government protests in 2013 which challenged the rule of Erdogan then Turkey's
00:47Prime Minister. Since being elected Atalay has been fighting to take his seat in parliament
00:53which comes with immunity from prosecution and could see him released from prison.
