Hi everyone, thank you for being an active viewer of this channel.
00:08
This time, we will discuss one of the chemical terms that often confuses novice chemists.
00:14
Electronegativity.
00:17
Let's read a simple definition of electronegativity.
00:21
Electronegativity is the ability, or tendency of an atom, to attract shared pair electrons
00:26
towards itself.
00:29
Maybe you have a different definition, that's not a problem.
00:36
To understand this definition, consider the following illustration.
00:42
These are atoms 1 and atom 2.
00:47
Let's say atom 1 has one unpaired electron in the outermost shell.
00:53
Atom 2 also has one unpaired electron in the outermost shell.
01:01
Both atoms are unstable.
01:04
To achieve stability, the two electrons must form a pair.
01:10
This is what is meant by a shared pair electrons.
01:16
Because it connects two atoms, the shared pair electrons forms a chemical bond.
01:22
So what does it have to do with electronegativity?
01:27
Even though it is in the form of a molecule, its atomic properties still exist.
01:32
The atomic nucleus of each atom can affect chemical bonds.
01:38
The shared pair electrons can be right in the middle of the atom.
01:44
The shared pair electrons may tend to be closer to the nucleus of atom 1.
01:50
Or the shared pair electrons may also tend to be closer to the nucleus of atom 2.
01:55
Well, this is the role of the electronegativity value of the atom.
02:02
The electronegativity value can determine the tendency of the nucleus of an atom to
02:06
attract shared pair electrons towards itself.
02:10
We will study this in more detail in the next video.
02:15
Hopefully, there are some benefits in the video.
02:19
Happy learning everyone!
