00:00An Israeli airstrike on a school building sheltering displaced Palestinians in Gaza
00:05City has killed more than 70 people, the director of a hospital has told the BBC.
00:12Fatal Naim, head of Al-Ali Hospital where many of the casualties were taken, said those
00:17were the victims who had been identified so far, with the remains of many others so badly
00:24disfigured that identification was difficult.
00:27An Israeli military spokesman said al-Tabin school served as an active Hamas and Islamic
00:34Jihad military facility, which Hamas denies.
00:37The strike has been criticized by Western powers, as well as regional countries, which
00:42have said it shows Israel has no desire to reach a ceasefire or end the Gaza war.
00:48Israel has attacked several such shelters in Gaza in the past few weeks.
00:53According to the United Nations, 477 out of 564 school buildings in Gaza had been directly
01:01hit or damaged as of July 6, with more than a dozen targeted since.
01:06Al-Tabin school housed more 1,000 people, having recently received dozens of displaced
01:12people from the town of Beit Hanoun after the Israeli army ordered them to leave their
01:18homes.
01:19The building also served as a mosque, and the Israeli strike hit during dawn prayers,
01:24witnesses said.
01:25Jaffer Taha, a student who lives near the school, told the BBC the sound of the bombing
01:31was followed by screaming and noise.
01:33"'Save us, save us.'
01:36They were screaming,' he said.
01:38The scene was horrific.
01:40There were body parts everywhere and blood covering the walls."
