00:39Now, the Nobel Prize winner, Muhammad Yunus, has been chosen to guide the country through

00:44this transition period.

00:46Yunus, who was born in 1940 in Chattogram, is now known for his groundbreaking work in

00:52microcredit which earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.

00:58He founded the Grameen Bank in 1983 offering small loans to poor people, especially women

01:03who couldn't get loans from traditional banks.

01:06This innovative approach helped millions of people to start small business and improve

01:11their lives.

01:12Yunus' method was successful because it relied on trust and community relationship.

01:18By 2006, over 7 million people had received microloans, with more than 95% of the loans

01:24going to women or women groups.

01:27Yunus found that women are more likely to use the money to benefit their families and

01:31communities.

01:32However, Yunus' relationship with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was troubled.

01:38When Yunus showed his interest in politics, in 2007, Hasina's government began investigating

01:43him.

01:44In 2011, Hasina's government removed him from the Grameen Bank, claiming that he has

01:49passed his retirement age.

01:51Yunus faced numerous lawsuits under Hasina's rule, which he claims were false accusations.

01:58Recent protests in Bangladesh were initially about the job quotas but grew into wider demonstrations

02:03against Hasina's government.

02:05More than 250 people have died in clashes with the police.

02:09The protesters wanted a change and saw Yunus as a strong opponent to Hasina's rule.

02:15After Hasina fled the country, the student protesters nominated Yunus to lead the interim

02:19government.

02:20They met with the country's president and security chief, and after six hours of discussions,

02:25an agreement was reached to make Yunus the transitional leader.

02:29Yunus also expressed his relief at Hasina's departure, telling the Washington Post that
