Why are far-right gangs in the UK attacking hotels?

Anti-immigration protests in several UK towns and cities have spiraled into violence, with some becoming attacks on hotels.   As CGTN Europe’s Jen Copestake explains from the scene in Rotherham, it’s due to online misinformation about asylum seekers.

00:00These hotels have been attacked because it was known that asylum seekers were staying here.

00:04This is the Holiday Inn in Rotherham. It was hosting 240 asylum seekers.

00:09Now, the reason that they were targeted was because of the spread of misinformation online.

00:15This was saying that a recent murder of three young girls in Southport was perpetuated

00:20by an asylum seeker that was Muslim who had arrived on a small boat.

00:24Now, that simply wasn't true, but it spread online and tapped in some deeply held sentiment

00:28regarding asylum seekers here in the UK.
