Hi friends, today we will learn more about the types of pronouns, so let's start.
00:09
We have already learned that there are 10 types of pronouns, and out of them we have
00:14
learned about personal and reflexive pronouns in detail in our last section.
00:22
Today we will learn about emphatic pronouns.
00:27
Emphatic pronouns are same as reflexive pronouns.
00:32
Himself, Herself, Ourselves, Itself, Yourself, Yourselves, all these are emphatic pronouns.
00:43
Yes, exactly same as reflexive pronouns.
00:48
Why do we call as emphatic pronouns?
00:53
All these pronouns are compound pronouns, and they can be emphatic pronoun and reflexive
00:59
pronoun.
01:01
Depending on the role they play in the sentence, we will learn in next example.
01:09
Reflexive pronouns are used when the subject refers to itself or subject and the object
01:15
of the sentence are same.
01:18
He bought a watch for himself.
01:22
Here the subject is he, and the subject he is referring to itself by the use of pronoun
01:30
himself.
01:32
Also, you cannot remove the reflexive pronoun from the sentence.
01:39
He bought a watch for...
01:42
The sentence is incomplete without pronoun, so this pronoun is reflexive pronoun.
01:50
Now see when these same compound pronouns are emphatic pronouns.
01:57
You should be sorry.
01:59
You yourself should be sorry.
02:01
In the second sentence, the pronoun yourself laid emphasis on the pronoun you.
02:09
So the compound pronoun yourself emphasizing the pronoun you.
02:15
This is why here this compound pronoun is known as emphatic pronoun.
02:22
Also, a sentence is still meaningful if you remove the emphatic pronoun from the sentence.
02:30
He himself bought a watch.
02:33
Here the emphatic pronoun himself is emphasizing the noun he.
02:40
Even if you remove it, the sentence will remain meaningful.
02:46
He bought a watch.
02:48
So now we know what are emphatic pronouns.
02:51
Let's have many more examples on it.
02:54
I myself will clean this window.
02:58
Here the emphatic pronoun myself emphasizing the pronoun I, and the sentence will remain
03:06
meaningful if we remove myself like I will clean this window.
03:15
The sentence is still meaningful.
03:18
Remember, if compound pronouns like myself, herself, himself, itself cannot be removed
03:27
from the sentence, in that case, those pronouns are called reflexive pronouns.
03:35
If compound pronouns like myself, yourself, himself can be removed from the sentence and
03:44
the sentence still remains meaningful, in that case, these pronouns are called emphatic
03:50
pronouns.
03:52
She herself will apologize for it.
03:56
Here herself, a compound pronoun, is an emphatic pronoun, as it's emphasizing the pronoun she.
04:06
And the sentence will remain meaningful if you remove herself.
04:11
She will apologize for it.
04:14
He himself should pack his bag.
04:18
Here himself, a compound pronoun, is an emphatic pronoun, as it's emphasizing the pronoun he.
04:27
And the sentence will remain meaningful if you remove himself.
04:32
He should pack his bag.
04:35
They themselves will pay for the fine.
04:39
Here themselves is an emphatic pronoun, that is emphasizing the pronoun they.
04:47
I myself heard that loud sound.
04:51
Here myself, emphasizing I.
04:55
And the sentence will remain meaningful without it.
04:59
I heard that loud sound.
05:02
So in all these sentences, the compound pronoun is emphasizing the pronoun.
05:09
Now next we will learn what are possessive pronouns.
05:14
Possessive pronouns.
05:17
This is my pen, not her pen.
05:20
You can see that the word pen is being repeated, and it makes the sentence somewhat less refined
05:28
as they are repetitive.
05:30
So to avoid this kind of repetition, we use pronouns like, this pen is mine, not hers.
05:40
The pronoun mine and hers tell us about the ownership of the pen.
05:46
These pronouns are called possessive pronouns, as they tell us about the ownership and possession
05:52
of things.
05:54
Possessive pronouns replace nouns or noun phrases in a sentence.
06:00
Also they are never followed by a noun.
06:03
Let's have a look at more examples.
06:06
My father is much taller than your father.
06:10
It seems repetitive.
06:12
The word father is coming twice in the sentence.
06:17
Here we can use possessive pronoun to replace the noun in sentence.
06:22
My father is much taller than yours.
06:26
Here we have used the possessive pronoun yours, which has replaced a noun very well, and it's
06:33
not followed by any other noun.
06:38
Your pencil is sharper than my pencil.
06:41
Again, it seems repetitive, as the word pencil is being repeated there twice.
06:48
So you can use a possessive pronoun to replace a noun.
06:53
Your pencil is sharper than mine.
06:57
Here we have used the possessive pronoun mine.
07:01
It has replaced the noun very well, and it shows the possession of the pencil.
07:09
Here we have a table which will help you to remember different possessive pronouns
07:14
to be used for different situations.
07:19
Mine is used to tell about the ownership of the pronoun I.
07:24
Yours is used to tell about the ownership of the pronoun you.
07:29
Similarly, his for he, hers for she, its for it.
07:39
Ours for we, theirs for they.
07:45
Now let's see the usage of different possessive pronouns.
07:49
Examples.
07:50
All these dresses and bags are mine.
07:54
Here, mine is telling about the ownership of the pronoun I.
08:02
What's mine is yours, my buddy.
08:05
Here the pronoun mine is telling about the ownership of I, and yours is telling about
08:12
the ownership of you.
08:16
The red house is theirs.
08:20
Theirs is telling the ownership of the pronoun they.
08:25
The whole idea of giving a surprise party was mine.
08:30
Here, mine is telling the ownership of the pronoun I.
08:36
Their interests are different from ours.
08:39
Here, ours is telling the ownership of the pronoun we.
08:45
John's efforts were better than hers, so he won.
08:49
Hers is telling the ownership of the pronoun she.
08:53
It was not our mistake, but theirs that they lost the game.
08:58
Telling the ownership of the pronoun they.
09:02
So kids, possessive pronouns tell us about the possession or ownership of someone or
09:09
something.
09:11
They replace the noun or noun phrase in the sentence, and they are not followed by another
09:19
noun.
09:20
Also, they make a sentence less repetitive.
09:24
So friends, that's all for today.
09:27
We have learned what are emphatic pronouns, and what are possessive pronouns.
09:33
Now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
09:36
Bye-bye.
