Good luck to all of you.
00:02
You are amazing.
00:04
You are amazing.
00:06
Yes you are.
00:12
What?
00:16
So do you write music?
00:18
Of course.
00:20
And I just saw you performing.
00:22
Tell me a little bit about how you
00:24
write your music.
00:27
It's done by inspiration.
00:29
So I don't have any
00:31
contrite songs usually that I
00:33
just sit down and say, hey, I'm going to write me a song
00:35
about. Nah, it just
00:37
comes from inspiration, sometimes in
00:39
dreams and other ways. So that's the main
00:41
way that I write songs.
00:43
You know, you have to be inspired.
00:53
Tell me a little bit about your company.
00:55
Well,
00:57
I married my
00:59
wife after I did
01:01
an acting degree
01:03
up at the University of Victoria
01:05
in British Columbia.
01:07
She was studying
01:09
there too and
01:11
we went up to her community,
01:13
which is the Guasla-Nahuatl Nation
01:15
up at the top of Vancouver Island.
01:17
And her people are just rife with beautiful
01:19
stories and mythology and songs
01:21
and a lot of really important language
01:23
revitalization because
01:25
colonization really
01:27
ran amok on
01:29
their people and devastated a lot
01:31
of their practices and traditions and
01:33
a lot of people have been holding on tight to them
01:35
and reinstilling them in the youth.
01:37
So a lot of elders
01:39
asked me to help tell the stories
01:41
and trusted me with the stories and
01:43
I started making films to try to help preserve
01:45
some of those things and to build them up and
01:47
amplify them.
01:49
And one story led to another, led to another
01:51
and then I started traveling
01:53
all over the province helping other people
01:55
in other nations do the same thing
01:57
and before you know it I just, you know,
01:59
I wasn't teaching anymore and I was doing film work
02:01
full time. So I dedicate
02:03
most of my talents to
02:05
indigenous content up
02:07
up north in Canada there
02:09
and then some
02:11
good mostly African-American
02:13
content here to the blues down here.
02:15
Nice. Yeah. Thanks for being
02:17
on my show. Oh hey, well there we go.
02:19
World class. I've been called the songbird
02:21
of a generation but
02:23
It's true.
02:25
It's true. I'm a videographer
02:27
I have Germaine Campbell
02:29
videography and in 2018
02:31
I was doing a little
02:33
barter with Mary, the
02:35
organizer here and she said if I make some
02:37
films and capture the essence of this
02:39
wonderful phenomenon that
02:41
I could get free admission
02:43
here and come hang out and we've been doing it
02:45
ever since and I brought my whole family
02:47
in. Hello kids and we'll be coming back
02:49
as long as they let us. And this year
02:51
this year you showed
02:53
a video before that will probably be released
02:55
will be released soon of a video
02:57
of just what this place is about
02:59
capturing all the magic and stuff and before
03:01
that we thought maybe this was just a scam
03:03
this has been a scam for, you know, six
03:05
seven years just to get, just to come here but
03:07
no, he proved it. He proved it.
03:09
Not even any batteries
03:11
in the camera.
03:13
Hold on a second, a little closer here.
03:15
It's a great scheme.
03:17
I respect it.
03:19
I respect it.
03:21
We got to watch it in the participants concert which is on Thursday
03:23
night when all the participants get to come up and
03:25
perform but we started with his filming, it was like
03:27
a little premiere, it was a special thing
03:29
for all of us to see
03:31
it showed so eloquently
03:33
what this place is and all the capturing the power
03:35
and the humor and the fun
03:37
and the family and the music and
03:39
the spirituality
03:41
all of it, you captured it all there, it's really
03:43
really great.
03:45
And I'm in it.
03:49
And what's your film called?
03:51
Well, I don't know
03:53
what I, what will it
03:55
be called?
03:57
Fort Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival.
03:59
Exactly, that's what I'll call it, Fort Townsend Acoustic Blues
04:01
Festival and
04:03
nothing too creative but
04:05
it does the job, that's what
04:07
it's about. It's about 50 minutes long
04:09
and I'll make a couple
04:11
quick little cuts and then
04:13
release it to the public, let it out to the world.
04:15
And get you excited for the next year.
04:17
I mean, that's the cool thing is
04:19
it's like, it is kind of like, you're like, oh I can't
04:21
believe it's over but then you're already thinking
04:23
like, okay but it does happen.
04:25
Well, that's a cherry on top.
04:27
It's a consolation.
04:29
It was like, Tuesday, I was like, ah shit, it's only Tuesday.
04:31
Yeah, that's always, yeah, don't let it fool ya.
04:33
What the fuck?
04:35
Don't let Tuesdays fool ya.
04:37
Hey, thanks a lot.
04:39
That was fun.
04:41
Just chatting.
04:43
That's right. Who knows what we'll do with it
04:45
but, you know, it's in the pocket.
04:47
That's the most important part is
04:49
to get it recorded, right?
