Hi kids! Today we will learn what are common nouns and proper nouns. So let's start!
00:11
Kids, all the naming words, that is, names of persons, animals, birds, places, things,
00:21
even feelings or ideas are called nouns.
00:27
Let's see some nouns which are the names of persons.
00:32
Boy, girl, mom, dad, brother, sister, Oliver, Emily, doctor, teacher.
00:44
All these are the names of persons, so they are naming words or nouns.
00:52
Next we have the examples of names of animals and birds.
00:58
They are also naming words or nouns.
01:01
Horse, parrot, whale, hen, lion, sparrow, tiger, crow, sheep, eagle, fox, duck, and many more.
01:19
Now let's see some examples of names of places.
01:24
They are also naming words or nouns.
01:28
Park, garden, forest, mall, street, road, highway, house, America, England, Australia, Earth, Mercury.
01:45
All these are names of places, so are naming words or nouns.
01:52
Now let's see some names of things that are also nouns.
01:58
Pencil, pen, lunchbox, vase, desk, necklace, ring, bowl, oven, machine, fan, bag.
02:11
All these are names of things, so they are also naming words or nouns.
02:18
Even the names of feelings and ideas are nouns, like
02:25
Love is the name of a feeling. It's also a naming word or a noun.
02:33
Hate is the name of a feeling, so it's also a naming word or a noun.
02:41
So we learned the names of animals, birds, persons, places, things, feelings, ideas.
02:50
All are naming words and are called nouns.
02:55
Now we will learn how nouns are classified into types.
03:01
Nouns can be of many kinds.
03:04
Common nouns, proper nouns, collective nouns, material nouns, and abstract nouns.
03:14
Now we will learn about common noun and proper noun in detail.
03:20
First we will learn what are common nouns.
03:25
Common nouns are names, but they do not exactly specify whose names they are.
03:32
Like exactly the names of which person, thing, place, animal, or feeling we are talking about.
03:42
Example
03:45
A girl is going to school.
03:49
Here girl is a naming word, but the word girl does not specify the exact person who is going to school.
04:00
And school is the name of a place, but it does not specify to which school the girl is going.
04:10
So both the words girl and school are naming words, but they do not specify the names of the person or the place.
04:21
They just inform that the girl is a person and school is a place.
04:27
Such words are called common nouns.
04:32
Here we have is another sentence.
04:37
Maria is going to St. Annie's school.
04:41
Here Maria is the name of a person and this name tells us exactly which girl we are talking about.
04:51
St. Annie's school is the name of a school and it clearly suggests that Maria is going to school called St. Annie's school.
05:04
So Maria and St. Annie's school exactly specify which person or place we are talking about.
05:15
Such names are called proper nouns.
05:19
Let's have more examples.
05:23
Joy is going to the mall.
05:28
Here Joy is the name of a person and it exactly specifies which person is being talked about.
05:37
So Joy is a proper noun.
05:42
Mall.
05:44
This word specifies the name of a place, but it does not specify the name of the mall Joy is going to.
05:53
So it's a common naming word or a common noun.
05:59
Two boys are playing in the park.
06:03
Here boys specify the names of person, but it does not specify the exact names of person.
06:12
So it's a common noun.
06:15
Park.
06:17
Park specifies the name of a place, but it does not exactly specify the name of the park.
06:25
So boys and park are naming words or nouns, but common nouns.
06:33
Now let's have some examples of proper nouns.
06:38
Proper nouns are those that clearly specify which person, which animal, which thing, or which place we are talking about.
06:51
Joy is playing in the garden.
06:55
Here the word joy exactly specifies the name of the person we are talking about.
07:03
So it's a proper noun.
07:06
Garden.
07:07
It specifies the name of the place, that is the garden, but it does not specify exactly which garden we are talking about.
07:19
So it's a common noun.
07:23
I am going to Paris.
07:25
Here Paris is a naming word or a noun, and it exactly specifies which place we are talking about.
07:36
So it's a proper noun.
07:39
Exact names or proper nouns are like Eva, James, Matthews, Charlie, India, Canada, Australia, Paris, etc.
07:57
So kids, today we learned what are nouns and the classification of nouns.
08:03
And we also learned about common nouns and proper nouns.
08:09
We will learn more about other types of nouns in our next assignment.
08:14
Now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
08:18
Bye-bye.
