New MRI unit to deliver thousands of scans a year

00:00The patients will arrive at the CDC, which is kind of quite a busy reception area,

00:05because you're sharing with the minor injury unit and the CT or serotonin X-ray.

00:09So we can take the patients and bring them on to the unit.

00:12We've got a separate waiting area where it's nice and quiet and peaceful.

00:16They can get changed on the unit, and there's toilets and all these,

00:19so they don't have to come and go.

00:21Most people struggle when they have their MRI scans,

00:24because they find it quite claustrophobic.

00:26So what I'm trying to do with the scanners we've got to wrist and here

00:30is make that as pleasant an experience as possible.

00:34So if you do come for your scan, it's not just lying in a tunnel for 20 minutes.

00:39You've got the virtual skylight, and you've got the video to watch,

00:44so you can be at a beach or watching dolphins and fish survive.

00:48But just to take your mind off it and make it a more pleasant experience.

00:51About 7,000 scans a year in a fantastic state-of-the-art facility here at Bodmin Hospital.

00:57So for residents, for communities, for patients in Bodmin and north and east Cornwall

01:02who might otherwise have to travel to Truro or to Plymouth or further afield,

01:07they can receive that care close to home.

01:09That's a really important part of our overarching strategy.

01:13And 7,000 additional MRI appointments is a benefit to the whole of Cornwall

01:18and the Almas of Surrey, so on both counts it's really important.

01:22Having these facilities based on our community hospitals is really important to local people.

01:28Local people tell me on my out and abouts that having care closer to home

01:34wherever possible is their preference.

01:36It reduces travel time for them.

01:39It means that they don't have to go to our big acute hospitals at Tralysk and also at Derriford.

01:47But also by increasing the capacity, therefore the amount of diagnostics that we can undertake in the community,

01:55it also helps us in bringing down waiting lists.
