00:00Far out in the Indian Ocean, on the convoy taking the Anzac soldiers to Europe, reporter

00:08Charles Bean hears the news and thinks maybe they're not going to Europe.

00:16News of war being declared on Turkey. We altered course about seven. Shall we be stopped in

00:24Egypt?

00:37The Dardanelles is an incredibly busy waterway. And it's here, in 1915, the British and the

00:47French assemble a massive fleet. Amongst the fleet, Ark Royal, the world's first aircraft

01:01carrier. And aboard her, Lieutenant Harry Strain.

01:06She's the first ship to be designed as an aircraft carrier, with an immense hold to

01:12accommodate seaplanes with folding wings.

01:27We do reconnaissance flights along the coasts and over the forts to determine whether intelligence

01:35information about the defences is correct.

01:41The great British and French fleet now tries to push its way through the Dardanelles.

01:51They open fire on Chinacule and the forts guarding the narrows.

02:05During the bombardment of this fort, a massive shell fired from a British warship pokes through

02:11this wall, shattered this building and, without exploding, shot 100 metres across this quadrangle.

02:22The shell flew across here and buried itself in this wall, again without exploding. And

02:30watching all of this from above is Harry Strain in a seaplane from Ark Royal.

02:40I was to fly up and down the straits between the narrows. I was to act as a sort of commentator,

02:47to keep up a running record of the damage done to the various forts.

02:54It was easy enough to hit the forts, but to do any good, the guns themselves had to be

03:01destroyed here. And it was by no means certain that all the guns were damaged or destroyed.

03:19I saw both Gaulois and Bouvet badly hit, and both appeared to be in difficulties. Inflexible

03:29was hit by something very heavy. Irresistible hit a mine and put her engines out of action.

03:36Ocean was ordered to take her in tow and, in closing, struck another mine and both were lost.

03:46Between the mines in the water and the guns in the forts, six battleships are sunk or crippled.

03:54It's a complete disaster.
