00:00A flurry of cyclists have fallen off their bikes on the first morning of the Paris Olympics
00:11as participants struggled to cope with the wet conditions.
00:14US athlete Taylor Nibbs skidded off four times during the women's road cycling time trials
00:19as the rain cascaded down in the French capital.
00:22And she was soon followed by her mechanic who went flying onto the road as he rushed
00:26to give the rider a new bike.
00:28Pre-race favourite Chloe Digert also took a tumble on the circuit as she tried to catch
00:32up with Australian Grace Brown, who picked up gold.
00:36The race was littered with crashes as cyclists contended with the treacherous Paris conditions,
00:40knowing that one crash would likely spell the end of a shot at a medal.
00:44Then disaster struck for American hopeful Nibb as the contender, who had been fastest
00:48at the 13.1km intermediate split point, fell off twice in a matter of minutes, including
00:54once in the same spot as her Danish counterpart.
00:57Nibb's hopes were then completely derailed when she suffered a puncture as the rain lashed
01:01down before her mechanic slipped over himself as he arrived to replace the bike.
01:06Even once the rain calmed down, Paris' roads remained completely waterlogged with the grey
01:10clouds and grim weather providing a dramatic backdrop for the event.
