‘Carina’ weakens into typhoon as it nears Taiwan

00:00So let's look at the latest satellite image. We can see the center of this typhoon Karina.

00:06As of 10 p.m., it was last seen at a distance of 335 kilometers to the north of Itbayat, Batanes.

00:13This part was hit by a super typhoon and is only in the typhoon category

00:18with a strong wind that reaches 175 kilometers per hour near the center

00:24and when it opens, it reaches 215 kilometers per hour.

00:28At the moment, it is moving in the direction of southwestward or Timag, Conluran

00:32at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour.

00:35And we can see here in the satellite image,

00:37even though the center of this typhoon is far from any part of our country,

00:41the clouds that we can see are still large and are affecting a large part of Luzon.

00:47So we are still hoping for a rainy season in a large part of the Luzon area,

00:51especially here in the western sections of northern and central Luzon

00:56and also in the areas of Calaborzon and Metro Manila,

00:59where we are still hoping for strong rains brought by the southwest monsoon

01:06or a strong wind that is affecting the typhoon Karina.

01:11So this is our latest forecast track as of 11 p.m.

01:15As we mentioned earlier, the center of this typhoon Karina is far from our Philippine landmass

01:23but the center of the typhoon Karina is large,

01:28which is why the tropical cyclone wind signal is still high in some parts of northern Luzon.

01:34And as we can see in our latest forecast track,

01:37this is in the general periphery, in the area of Taiwan

01:41and in the next few hours, it is possible for landfall in the Taiwan area

01:45and it will continue to move north-westward

01:49and it will slowly weaken until it leaves our Philippine area of responsibility,

01:54possibly tomorrow morning.

01:56As we mentioned earlier, because the radius of this typhoon Karina is large,

02:01the tropical cyclone wind signal is still high in some parts of northern Luzon.

02:06In Batanes, the tropical cyclone wind signal number 2 is still high,

02:11that is highlighted in yellow,

02:13while signal number 1 is high here in the extreme northern Luzon,

02:17mostly here in the northern portion of the northern Luzon area.

02:21In Babuyan Islands, the northern portion of mainland Gagayan,

02:24as well as the northern portion of Ilocos Norte.

02:28That is why we still hope that the strong typhoon Karina

02:32will continue to bring strong winds to the mentioned areas.

02:35Our fellow Filipinos are being careful there.

02:38Meanwhile, in our latest update, as of 11 p.m.,

02:42heavy rainfall warnings were released by our regional services division

02:47from the northern Luzon PRSD and NCR PRSD.

02:51The red rainfall warning is still high in Ilocos Sur, Benguet, La Union, Pangasinan.

02:58The orange rainfall warning is still high in Ilocos Norte,

03:02Tarlac, Zambales, Bataan, and Pampanga.

03:06Meanwhile, the yellow rainfall warning is still high in some parts of Abra,

03:10here in Metro Manila, as well as in Bulacan and Rizal.

03:14That is why in the mentioned areas, especially in low-lying areas,

03:19the possibility of heavy rainfall is high.

03:24Our fellow Filipinos are being careful there.

03:29In the next few days, due to the effects of the southwest monsoon,

03:35some parts of Luzon will still experience heavy rainfall due to the effects of the monsoon.

03:41But if we will notice, until the weekend,

03:44the areas that will experience heavy rainfall will gradually decrease,

03:50due to the southwest monsoon.

03:52Tomorrow, we still expect heavy to intense rainfall in Zambales,

03:57La Union, Pangasinan, and Benguet.

04:00Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rainfall will still be experienced here in Metro Manila,

04:06Bulacan, Pampanga, Cavite, Batanes, Babuyan Islands,

04:11which are 10 parts of the Ilocos region,

04:13Abra, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro.

04:17When Friday comes, mostly here in the western section of northern Luzon,

04:23moderate to heavy rainfall will be experienced in Zambales, Bataan,

04:29or the western section of central Luzon, as well as in Pangasinan and Benguet areas.

04:34When Saturday comes, mostly here in the exposed parts of the western section of central Luzon,

04:40in Zambales and Bataan, moderate to heavy rainfall is still possible.

04:45That's why we need to be prepared for that,

04:47especially since these are the areas that have experienced heavy rainfall in the past few days.

04:54We still expect high chances of flooding or landslides.

04:59Our countrymen continue to be careful and prepared for the mentioned areas

05:03that may experience heavy rainfall.

05:08When it comes to areas with strong winds, areas that are exposed to tropical cyclone winds,

05:12Signal No. 2 and Signal No. 1 are the areas where we expect strong winds.

05:19Meanwhile, this is the area where Southwest Monsoon brings strong winds.

05:25From now until tomorrow, areas of the Ilocos region, Cordillera Administrative Region,

05:30which is a large part of Luzon,

05:32we still expect strong winds brought by Southwest Monsoon.

05:37When it comes to Friday, mostly northern Luzon, central Luzon,

05:42and areas of southern Luzon,

05:45we still expect strong winds in the area of western Visayas.

05:51When it comes to Saturday, the areas that have experienced strong winds

05:58brought by tropical cyclone winds will be lessened.

05:59So mostly in the areas of northern Luzon,

06:03as well as central Luzon, and some parts of Mimaropa,

06:06as well as western sections of Palawan.

06:10So those are the areas that have experienced strong winds brought by Southwest Monsoon.

06:21Meanwhile, in the situation of our ocean,

06:23we have a gale warning at the moment,

06:25warning of high waves here in the northern ocean of northern Luzon

06:30in the townships of Batanes, northern coast of Cagayan,

06:34along with the Babuyan Islands,

06:36as well as the northern coast of Ilocos Norte.

06:39We expect the possibility of 4.5 meters of strong winds

06:45brought by Southwest Monsoon, as well as Hurricane Karina.

06:50So it is dangerous to sail, especially those with small sea vehicles.

06:54And we also expect a moderator of seas in the oceans of our country.
