00:00Of course I'm disappointed. At this level, the win is what matters. I just feel like, I don't know, I put a lot into this sport and yeah, I've come really close in the Budapest many times.
00:21And today I just felt like I had it within grasp and it really just slipped away. Until I heard Pogacar was coming, I really thought that it was possible, I felt super good.
00:37Yeah, that's why when you're in that state of mind, you're all in for the win, so anything but that is pretty disappointing.
00:46We thought local knowledge of this climb would definitely play in your favour. Just tell us, what was the sort of idea in your head about how you were going to play it on this last climb when you got to the bottom?
00:56Yeah, I know the climb super well. I've done I think four altitude camps up here by myself. So I've climbed it countless times while really cracked many, many times.
01:16I know exactly where the steep parts are. I didn't really have a plan in my head. I mean, originally, we were in the break to help Jonas and sadly, Roger took some improvisation, but I felt like I was the strongest of the break.
01:33Those other guys had spent a lot of matches the previous days in breakaways. So yeah, I just wanted to attack before the steep parts ended at the beginning. So when I attacked, it was harder to come back to the wheel.
01:46And then yeah, once I was gone, I just thought about doing the best effort I had in my legs, nothing else. I wasn't pacing based on anyone. I was hoping that Percutcher would just kind of go more conservative.
02:04I knew with three and a half, four minutes, it was going to be really tight. But yeah, just didn't have enough in the legs.
02:14You've had an incredible first season with this team. And while you talked about how much you invest in this sport, do you console yourself with the sort of knowledge that it is going to come at one point?
02:26Yeah, I mean, you can say that all you want, but you also have to make it happen at some point. So yeah, I can be happy with the feeling that I have and the level that I have, especially in the third week of a Grand Tour. That's really new for me. So definitely going in the right direction, but still need to win.
02:50And the last one, Matteo, you said that you were out there specifically, well, mainly as a satellite rider. Was the idea that Jonas was going to attack over the top of the bonnet and maybe near the summit and join you on the valley before Isola?
03:04Yeah, we had a few plans, just depending on the race situation. But yeah, he felt normal, but not like amazing, he said in the radio. So we just decided after the bonnet that we should go for the stage.
03:20We were kind of waiting, waiting, waiting, just trying to keep as big of a gap as possible. Because when he or Tadej launches, you need like five minutes. So yeah, we were just trying to keep a gap. And then once we got to the bottom of the bonnet, we made the call to go for the stage. And yeah, I have to say like, Wilco is such an amazing teammate.
03:41Automatically, I didn't have to ask anything. He started riding for me. And I just said, all I said was I felt really good. And he just went all in for me. So also, he was there in Périgny, he's a big part of my win there. And he's just a super humble and nice guy. So yeah, he's an amazing teammate.
