00:24Situated at over 11,500 feet, Leh is the largest town in the Ladakh region, nestled

00:31in the high-altitude desert of the Himalayas.

00:37This crucial location serves as a vital logistical hub for the Indian Army, supporting the movement

00:42of troops, equipment and supplies to forward positions in the challenging terrains of Ladakh.

00:49Leh also provides essential support to forward bases such as those in Siachen, the world's

00:55highest battlefield.

00:56Here, the 101 regulars stayed at a homestay run by Colonel Sevang Smanla and his wife

01:03Tahira.

01:05This charming abode offered more than just a comfortable stay.

01:11Colonel Smanla, who commanded a medical unit during the Kargil War, recounted tales of

01:16camaraderie, bravery and the stark realities of wartime.

01:20At that time, my son was very small and he was studying in class 6.

01:26So when he found out that the Kargil War was going on, he ran away.

01:30He said, I want to see my nation first.

01:34I was that time posted at a place called Kalimpong.

01:37I was commanding a military unit there, a hospital there.

01:41So the war broke out and I was very enthusiastic to join the war front.

01:47That's why I happened to reach to the Kargil area.

01:52We had placed a lot of support there in the maintenance of the quick evacuation of the

02:02sick people.

02:04And then they used to be brought to my unit where I used to have a hospital.

02:09I feel massive lucky to recollect all this happening in the defense of our country.

02:22Seeking to unwind and soak in the local culture, the 101 regulars visited the bustling local

02:28market.

02:31Here they explored the vibrant stalls, shopped for traditional handicrafts and tasted local

02:36delicacies, immersing themselves in the rich cultural tapestry of Leh.

02:47The day also included a poignant journey to honor the memories of their fallen comrades.

02:52Their visit to the Hall of Fame and the Kargil War Memorial was a moving tribute to the bravery
