00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the top 10 actors who always
00:09play jerks.
00:15For this list, we'll be looking at the actors who are usually typecast in movies as nasty,
00:20rude, and otherwise unpleasant people.
00:23Who do you think is best at playing jerks?
00:25Let us know in the comments!
00:28Number 10.
00:29Clancy Brown You might recognize Clancy Brown's name
00:32as the voice of Mr. Krabs, but the greedy crustacean is by no means the most morally
00:38corrupt character Brown has played.
00:45Brown's towering physique and imposing nature have made characters like the Kurgan in Highlander
00:50and guard Byron Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption all the scarier.
01:01He also has the distinct honor of being part of both the Marvel and DC universes, voicing
01:06villains such as Mr. Sinister, Bane, and most famously, Lex Luthor.
01:18Brown has also been cast in the upcoming John Wick Chapter 4.
01:22We have a slight hunch that he's going to play a bad guy.
01:25Number 9.
01:26Billy Zane We didn't need much reason to root against
01:29Cal Hockley in Titanic, but Billy Zane provided the perfect amount of upper-class ugliness
01:35to Rose's fiancé, and it seems Zane was made to play unlikable characters.
01:45His film debut was Back to the Future, where he played the aptly named Match, one of Biff
01:50Tannen's henchmen.
01:51He then was chilling as a villain in the thriller, Dead Calm.
02:03There are also lesser-known movies where Zane is decidedly unbearable, like Survival Island,
02:08also known as Three, and The Believer.
02:11Zane doesn't seem to mind playing antagonistic characters.
02:15He said playing these parts is a lot of fun and very lucrative.
02:18However, he hopes movies shy away from anti-heroes and more toward positive role models.
02:24To that we say, good luck.
02:27Number 8.
02:28Gary Cole Did you experience traumatic flashbacks to
02:32every bad boss you've ever had when watching Office Space?
02:35If so, thank the acting talents of Gary Cole for helping to create Bill Lumberg, who seems
02:40like an exaggeration only if you've never experienced the joys of working in an office.
02:58Other great Cole roles include irresponsible father Reese Bobby in Talladega Nights and
03:02drug lord Ted Jones in Pineapple Express.
03:12He seems to know these characters well enough to make them utterly repugnant, but with just
03:17enough charisma to keep us watching.
03:19Here's one memo we all got, Gary Cole is great at playing jerks.
03:29Number 7.
03:30Kurt Fuller You might know Kurt Fuller best as oddball
03:34but amusing coroner Woody on Psych.
03:39However, many of Fuller's characters are more mean than weird.
03:46Fuller's tall stature and stern demeanor are put to great use in films like Ghostbusters
03:512 and Midnight in Paris.
03:53He also had a great role as the less than angelic angel Zachariah on Supernatural.
04:00You'll notice that Fuller is frequently cast in comedies, but he never seems like
04:06he's trying to make you laugh.
04:08He takes the role seriously, even if everything around him is ridiculous.
04:13His characters might not always be lovable, but we love his commitment.
04:22Number 6.
04:23Christopher McDonald Adam Sandler's protagonist in Happy Gilmore
04:27isn't the most likable, but we're still rooting for him against the stuck up and vindictive
04:32shooter McGavin, played by Christopher McDonald.
04:47In films like this and others, like Requiem for a Dream, McDonald nails the smarminess
04:53that often gets mistaken for charisma.
04:55He also got our blood boiling as Geena Davis' unappreciative husband in Thelma and Louise,
05:00and proved himself to be a great voice actor as crazed government agent Kent Mansley in
05:05The Iron Giant.
05:10Many actors are praised for the intensity they display in dramatic roles, but Christopher
05:15McDonald reminds us that comic actors can also bring the passion.
05:22Number 5.
05:23John C. McGinley Did you ever look up to someone who seemed
05:26to simultaneously love and loathe you?
05:30Then you can probably relate to the relationship between JD and Dr. Cox on Scrubs.
05:40As Dr. Cox, John C. McGinley cracked us up with his hilarious insults, but also presented
05:45some heart underneath his prickly exterior.
05:57And McGinley has played other characters who are also lacking in the empathy department.
06:02These include business consultant Bob Slidell in Office Space, FBI Director Ben Harp in
06:07Point Break, and Police Union President Franco Sullivan in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
06:23In real life, McGinley is an active advocate for Down Syndrome awareness.
06:27It must take a real kind guy to play characters as nasty as this.
06:35Number 4.
06:36William Zabka Few big screen baddies got to us quite like
06:39The Karate Kid's Johnny Lawrence, a nasty brute whose comeuppance we're instantly
06:44waiting for.
06:52And William Zabka must have had something brewing inside him, because The Karate Kid
06:57was his film debut.
06:59From there came the typecasting, with Zabka also playing jerks in 80s comedies, Just One
07:04of the Guys, and Back to School.
07:13He was so good in this kind of role that strangers would reportedly heckle him in public.
07:17And although Zabka has taken on projects that show his depth, he's returned to The Karate
07:22Kid well, reprising his role as Johnny in the TV series Cobra Kai.
07:27But his performance never feels like a retread of his previous work.
07:40Number 3.
07:42Ben Foster There are jerks, and then there are the characters
07:46Ben Foster often plays, who have plenty of sins to confess.
07:59Some of Foster's most notable roles include kidnapper Mars in Hostage, gunslinger Charlie
08:04Prince in 310 to Yuma, and bank robber Tanner Howard in Hell or High Water.
08:13But these characters aren't just compelling because they're immoral.
08:17Foster has so much energy and magnetism that he steals just about every scene he's in.
08:22We'd hate to encounter most of these characters in real life, but we love seeing how Foster
08:26taps into the chaos of his hot-headed portrayals.
08:37Number 2.
08:38Michael Ironside Some of Michael Ironside's performances
08:41convey stern leadership, while others convey complete psychopathy.
08:50You might not recognize his name, but you know his face from roles like Lieutenant Radcheck
08:55in Starship Troopers, henchman Richter in Total Recall, and telepath Daryl in Scanners.
09:06Ironside is so effective at playing intimidating characters that when he enters a scene, our
09:10first reaction is to tense up.
09:23He can unsettle us more with a single grimace than most actors can with a furious breakdown.
09:29Of course, when Ironside gets unhinged, he's still engrossing.
09:37Need an actor who will instantly increase your movie's tension levels?
09:40Get Michael Ironside on your side.
09:43Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
09:46Jason Schwartzman Schwartzman is great at playing characters
09:50dripping with arrogance.
10:01Dan Hedaya Films like Blood Simple display Hedaya's
10:05mesmerizing tenseness.
10:13William Atherton Who didn't hate Walter Peck in Ghostbusters?
10:23Dabney Coleman Despite the friendly mustache, Coleman has
10:27played some truly nasty characters.
10:34Paul Gleeson Few fictional administrators are as unlikable
10:38as Assistant Principal Vernon.

11:04James Spader John Hughes' high school movies had their
11:08share of jerks, but none quite so memorably despicable as the arrogant Steph in Pretty
11:13in Pink, played by James Spader.
11:25With his feathered hair and conceited demeanor, Steph is exactly who we imagine when we think
11:30of wealth depriving a person of empathy.
11:32While Spader, the son of two teachers, wasn't part of the 1% growing up, this character
11:38still feels disturbingly authentic.
11:51Spader has also flexed his arrogance in roles like controlling boss E. Edward Gray in Secretary,
11:56Sabre CEO Robert California in The Office, and criminal turned FBI informant Red Reddington
12:02on The Blacklist.
12:10In each of these roles, Spader lends a chilling yet familiar aura, one that simultaneously
12:15repels and attracts us.
