01:20On the 30th of June 2007, the third session of the Scottish Parliament
01:25was marked in a ceremony which will continue the Scottish tradition
01:29of bringing together the people, the Parliament and the Queen.
01:32The day commenced with an address by Her Majesty the Queen
01:35to newly elected members of the Scottish Parliament and guests.
01:39This was then followed by a repeat of the writing
01:42marking the centuries-old Scots tradition of Parliament
01:45and people working in public partnership.
01:51It's a very nice video camera, but it seems that it's not working properly.
01:54But it seems that it's not working properly.
01:56But it seems that it's not working properly, but we'll let it work.
02:20This essential part of the ceremonial of the old Scots Parliament
02:24was successfully updated to mark the opening of the Holyrood Building in 2004.
02:29It attracted thousands of spectators along the length of the Royal Mile
02:33to watch the parade of people from all walks of Scottish life.

03:09Building on that success and paying recognition to local heroes from across Scotland,
03:14MSPs once more asked to nominate someone from their local area to take part in the riding.
03:21Around 1,200 people took part in the riding, representing each region in Scotland.
03:27The riding takes its route down the Royal Mile and into Holyrood Park.

04:31The day transformed into an open-air concert in the grounds of Holyrood
04:35to build on Parliament's ongoing commitment to engaging with the people of Scotland.
04:39Acts included live music, traditional, contemporary, multicultural and international drama and dance.
04:46The day was intended to showcase Scottish achievement and distinction
04:50and celebrated Scots today,
04:52with guests being invited from the fields of education, sport, science, the arts and industry.
05:07There certainly was a strange mix of people around.

05:26An Indian street band, formed from young members of Edinburgh,
05:30appeared playing lots of Indian tunes.
05:33The band plays at mellas and cultural events.

05:54Both young and old generations of people have gathered
05:58to celebrate their home country of Scotland.

06:36During the day of events, I climbed up Arthur's seat to get a closer look on the events below.
06:42Despite the day of celebrating Scottish tradition,
06:45a protest took place intending to express opposition to the presence of Queen Elizabeth in the Scottish Parliament.
06:53I'm here today to protest against the Queen being invited along to the opening session of the Scottish Parliament.
07:01I'm a Republican, and I consider that the Queen, far from being the Queen of Scots, is actually the foe of Scots.
07:08She's our enemy. She's the one who's letting us down, denying us the right to elect our own head of state.
07:15As a President of a Republic of Scotland, someone who will defend the liberties and the freedoms of the people of Scotland,
07:22the right to speak out, the right to protest, the right to have a free press, have a genuinely free country.
07:28With this Queen, we don't even have a free Parliament.
07:30Parliament ponchos are filling out as we speak, so if you haven't got one yet, look out for one of the Parliament ushers.
07:36Annabel, did you enjoy today?
07:38Yes, I think it's been a very impressive day.
07:41Is that just in my head, or are you hearing that as well?
07:43Dignity, which is appropriate.
07:45I thought I was hearing voices there.
07:47We're going now.
07:48So what's going to happen, ladies and gentlemen, we're going to set up.
07:50We've got some fine, outstanding Scottish talent for you in just a few minutes.
07:54These guys are well-travelled, they're very, very popular, very much in demand.
07:58We're very lucky to have them.
07:59I'll tell you a bit more about them in just a moment.
08:01More music for you in just a wee second, and we'll be back in just a couple of seconds with our next live acts.
