The incident of the splitting of the moon, as narrated in Islamic tradition, is a remarkable event believed to have occurred during the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

According to historical accounts and hadiths (sayings and actions of the Prophet), the incident took place in Makkah. One night, the Quraysh (the tribe of the Prophet's opponents) challenged Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to show them a miracle to prove his prophethood. In response, the Prophet supplicated to Allah, and by the divine will, the moon split into two distinct halves in the sky.

The Quran references this event in Surah Al-Qamar (54:1-2):
- "The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two]. And if they see a miracle, they turn away and say, 'Passing magic.'"

Various companions of the Prophet, such as Abdullah ibn Masud and Anas ibn Malik, reported witnessing this miraculous event. According to their accounts, the two halves of the moon could be seen distinctly separated from each other over the horizon. After witnessing this supernatural phenomenon, some of the disbelievers present in Makkah acknowledged it as a sign of Allah's power, while others dismissed it as mere magic.

The splitting of the moon is considered one of the many miracles granted to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to strengthen the faith of his followers and to serve as a divine sign of his prophethood. It remains a significant event in Islamic history, illustrating the power of Allah and the truth of the message brought by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
