00:08One week ago, the six conservative justices on the Supreme Court undermined the most basic
00:14premise in our constitutional order, that no one, no one is above the law.
00:20They incorrectly declared that former President Donald Trump enjoys broad immunity from criminal
00:25prosecution for actions he took while in office.
00:29They incorrectly declared that all future Presidents are entitled to a breathtaking
00:33level of immunity, so long as their conduct is ostensibly carried out in their official
00:39capacity as President.
00:41They incorrectly declared, in effect, the same thing Richard Nixon told David Frost
00:47in 1977, quote, Nixon said, when the President does it, it means it's not illegal.
00:56That's what the court, in effect, was saying.
01:00We were all taught in grade school that there are no kings here in America, but what the
01:03conservative justices have done is effectively place a crown on Donald Trump's head.
01:10In their judgment, the President is now free to behave however he likes, even to behave
01:16criminally, as long as he argues that he was acting as President, he is in many ways untouchable.
01:24The conservative majority's decision on immunity is the most un-American proposition, the very
01:29antithesis of what the framers envisioned.
01:33Presidential immunity is nowhere to be found in the Constitution, and this lawless ruling
01:37underscores just how hollow the conservative justices' commitment to originalism truly
01:42is.
01:43We Democrats will not let the Supreme Court's decision stand unaddressed.
01:48The Constitution makes plain that Congress has the authority to check the judiciary through
01:53appropriate legislation.
01:56I will work with my colleagues on legislation classifying Trump's election subversion acts
02:01as unofficial acts, not subject to immunity.
02:05We're doing this because we believe that in America, no President should be free to overturn
02:10an election against the will of the people, no matter what the conservative justices may
02:15believe.
02:17As we work on this important matter, we'll also keep working on other proposals to reassert
02:22Congress's Article I authority to rein in the abuse of our federal judiciary.
02:27The American people are tired, just tired, of justices who think they are beyond accountability.
02:35Now the Supreme Court's ruling in Trump v. United States is just the finishing touch
02:39on one of the most destructive Supreme Court terms in modern history.
