00:06The Jeffrey Chia Foundation or JCF has launched a teacher professional development program
00:12to advance education for sustainable development or ESD in Malaysia.
00:17The program was launched at the opening ceremony of ESD for 2030 regional meeting
00:22on transforming the futures of education at Sunwind University on Wednesday.
00:28The ceremony was officiated by Fazila Fazil who serves as the undersecretary of strategic
00:33planning and international relations at the education ministry and as secretary general
00:38of the Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO. Representing education minister Fatalina Siddiq
00:44who is also president of the Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO, Fazila welcomed the
00:48convening of the meeting in Malaysia drawing parallels between its objective and the Malaysia
00:53Madani philosophy. Madani underscores that Malaysia's development must transcend mere
01:00material and physical infrastructure emphasizing the cultivation of citizen character and
01:06capabilities. The enhancement of Malaysian citizens character and capabilities is pivotal
01:12to education. Also present at the event was president of the UNSDSN and Sir Jeffrey Chia
01:19distinguished professor at Sunwind University, Professor Jeffrey Sachs who delivered a keynote
01:24address on the imperative to transform education in order to build prosperous resilient and
01:29sustainable societies of the future. Education is the single most important investment that any
01:37society makes. That's not a statement of values that's an economic bottom line statement. If you
01:46want Malaysia to be a high-income country at the top of the league do exactly what Tan Sri
01:52Jeffrey Chia is doing, build institutions of excellence in the education sector, invest in
02:00education, invest more in education than you're investing right now because all of that is
02:07absolutely vital. Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Sir Dr Jeffrey Chia says
02:13JCF will fund the development and delivery of a capacity building development program on ESD
02:18for teachers in national and national type schools throughout the country.
02:22We in Sunway always believe that we want to learn from the best and work with the best.
02:28Okay by doing what we are doing I think we are gaining traction to get the impactful result that
02:35we want and this is the start of the Mission 4.7 thing that we are promoting and I think the
02:45vision school and we will expand it to more schools. The program will advance Mission 4.7,
02:52a global initiative to advance transformative education for the United Nations Sustainable
02:57Development Goals or SDGs which calls upon governments to ensure that learners acquire
03:02the knowledge, skills, values and attributes needed to achieve the SDGs.
