00:00Coco, I'll start. How are you feeling out on court today?
00:06Yeah, I felt good out there.
00:08It was a lot slower today with the just the conditions,
00:13but I overall still felt good.
00:15Right. Questions?
00:16Yep. Congrats, Coco, you're still going.
00:19Yeah. But you could face British qualifier Sinead Cartell next.
00:23I'm just curious if there's anything you know about her game
00:26and your expectations of playing a Brit here.
00:28Yeah, I don't know much, to be honest.
00:32I, you know, I knew she was up like winning this match.
00:35I kind of was looking at some of her results just to prepare and pick
00:39and choose what matches I might want to watch.
00:42But now I see it's a third set, so I don't know.
00:46You know, I would try.
00:47I'll do that afterwards, depending on the winner.
00:50But it will be tough to face a Brit, obviously, especially on grass.
00:54I think that they, you know, always do really well.
00:57But especially in this environment.
01:00Yeah. Hey, Coco.
01:02I remember last year during your summer run,
01:05you were talking a lot about learning to win ugly and it mattered less
01:08to kind of how it happened and more just the result.
01:10Today, you won two and I think and said you wish you'd been cleaner.
01:14Do you let yourself be a little bit, I guess,
01:16pick some more nits now that kind of you have won the Grand Slam
01:20and you're at a kind of different place in your career?
01:22What's that progression been like for you?
01:25Yeah, I do think I can be too critical because two and one is clean.
01:29But I don't know.
01:30I think it's just like moments.
01:32Maybe I like miss some shots that I should normally would make.
01:35But also that's tennis.
01:37You're always going to miss some shots that you normally would make.
01:39So I am trying to focus on winning in straight sets and winning cleaner.
01:44But obviously today, I, you know, can't be too critical.
01:47I think on the court, I was getting a little bit more frustrated
01:50than normal considering the scoreline.
01:53Matt? Hey, Google.
01:55Why do you think you're doing better than you were a month ago, six weeks ago?
02:01I know there's some tactical stuff you don't necessarily want to discuss,
02:04but if there's general thoughts on like your approach
02:07and what might be different than earlier this spring?
02:11I think I'm just going for it more and accepting the misses.
02:16I think today I had a really low first serve percentage in the first set
02:19and maybe even in the second it got higher.
02:21But I think when I go for it overall, it's a winning, more winning for me on my serve.
02:27And I think I just have a lot of confidence in my return game
02:31that makes the serve serving a lot easier.
02:33I know I can get the power when I need to.
02:36So I think I'm just just trying to focus on continuing that
02:39and not losing confidence in it.
02:41And obviously, when you're making more second serves in the court,
02:44it just overall is easier to hold serve.
02:47Tiffani?
02:49Speaking of going for your serve,
02:51curious how much do you like check the serve speed?
02:53And I know this is not important at all, but do you think you have 130 in your shoulder?
02:59Yeah, I do check the serve speed sometimes in the match
03:02because I try to make sure I go for it,
03:05because sometimes unconsciously when you're tight,
03:07maybe you try to just get the serve in.
03:08So there are times where I'll check.
03:11And if I miss, if it's like even if I miss in the service, like 119 or 118 and up,
03:16I'm like, OK, that's good.
03:18I hate to miss when it's like slower.
03:21And I do try. I want to get to 130.
03:24I think that the fastest I've gotten is 128.
03:27Do I have a 130 in me?
03:29I don't know. Maybe if I was like a little bit taller,
03:32I definitely can get 130.
03:33Now, if it goes in, I don't know.
03:39Oh, hi, Coco.
03:41I hate to ask you to look beyond Wimbledon,
03:43but this is a challenging year,
03:44given that you've gone from clay to grass to clay
03:48and then to hard courts in defense of your U.S. Open.
03:51What kind of a challenge is that?
03:52And is there anything that you plan to do sort of in defense of your U.S.
03:56Open title?
03:56Yeah, well, the first thing is I don't look at it as like a defense or anything,
04:01because I was looking at a lot of
04:06players in the past, in the offseason,
04:07because I felt like I was looking a lot at the defense and a lot of times
04:11players in their first slam.
04:12And, you know, it takes them like a couple of years to win the next.
04:15So not that I want to be that person and I want to win, obviously,
04:19as soon as possible, but I like I tend to be ultra critical of myself.
04:23And I'm like, OK, let me just take a step back and just be patient
04:26and enjoy the ride.
04:28So when it comes to all of these events being bunched up together,
04:32I don't look at it any like I haven't looked that far ahead, honestly.
04:37Right now, I'm just focusing on the going back to clay transition
04:40and then we'll see when it gets to hardcore.
04:43I think hard is the easiest to transition just because it's nothing changes.
04:48It's their cement.
04:49So I think that would be the easiest.
04:52But I will be curious to see how this grass to clay goes,
04:56because I feel like I've finally gotten used to moving on grass.
04:59And then I usually don't go back on clay till next year.
05:02So I'm I'm excited to go back on clay.
05:05I do like clay, so I think it'll be OK.
05:08I know you've studied French.
05:10What are your thoughts on when other players entertain questions
05:15in multiple languages at these press conferences?
05:18And perhaps do you envision doing that someday?
05:21Yeah, that is my dream.
05:23I'm just like on and off.
05:24I get unconfident in my French when I go to Paris specifically.
05:29Sometimes they're not nice when it comes to me trying to speak French.
05:33So I do want to do it one day.
05:36I understand it more than I can like speak.
05:38I think I'm just trying to be more confident in it.
05:41But I do try my best at home to do as much.
05:43I used to have a tutor during COVID.
05:45I actually had a tutor, but it became became tough
05:48to schedule lessons with the schedule.
05:50So it is something that I'll try to do again, maybe during the offseason.
05:55And what are your thoughts on the players?
05:57Oh, I think it's incredible.
05:58I told you it's my dream to be able to do that.
06:00So I think it's incredible, especially those who maybe English
06:03isn't their first language.
06:04I think it's it's great that they're you know, they know how to do it.
06:08And I think as Americans, we're pretty spoiled when it comes to that
06:12because we don't have to do that.
06:16OK, obviously, Andy Murray's announced that this will be his last Wimbledon,
06:20it seems what for you would be his legacy,
06:23perhaps specifically with regard to women's tennis?
06:26Yeah, I mean, I just saw a video on TikTok, which always makes us round
06:31about him, like correcting reporters about stat statistics.
06:36And it's something that, you know, if you as a female player,
06:40like you'll see a lot where people will be like, oh, like
06:43he he's the first player to do this.
06:45And it's like, well, Serena Venus did it or another player
06:48who did it like ages ago or like the first American.
06:51And I'm like, oh, I did it and just did it.
06:54So, yeah, I do appreciate him and not only him, but also his mother
06:59for everything they've done for like equality for women's sports.
07:02And I think his legacy is that he's just a fighter.
07:04I think that the most inspiration I have from him is no matter what court
07:08he's playing, whether it's an ITF or a center court here,
07:10he's putting 100 percent effort into that.
07:13And it's really unfortunate that he couldn't, you know, get one
07:17last healthy match out here, because I definitely think he deserves
07:20in the career, his career in his terms.
07:22But I hope that the doubles goes well with his brother.
07:26And he's definitely an icon of the sport.
07:29And he's had an incredible career that a lot of people dream of.
07:34And you previously said that you feel passionate about expressing yourself
07:37on court through your outfits and your style and that some of your outfits
07:41have taken a couple of years in the making.
07:42Can you talk about what inspired your outfit today and something about that process?
07:47Yeah, I mean, honestly, one is not too much you can do with the color department.
07:52So we just tried to do something different with like the cut of the dress.
07:56And like I like to wear crop tops a lot.
08:00So that cut is kind of like supposed to be like a crop top.
08:03But like an elegant, like Wimbledon type way.
08:07Like I just think of Wimbledon as a tradition.
08:10And even with like my nails, I always usually get like French or white here
08:14just to match that elegance of it.
08:17And yeah, so I think that was like the inspiration from it.
08:22Yeah, the only thing you can really do here is play with the texture.
08:25And maybe, you know, next year I'll try to put in more texture into it.
08:29It's not much you can do here, but I do appreciate the elegance of it all.
08:33The white. Yeah.
08:36Yep.
08:37Go, go. Congratulations.
08:38I just wondered, during the Wimbledon fortnight,
08:41what you like to do kind of when you're not playing tennis?
08:45Well, tonight I was thinking if I would go to like a theater,
08:48it's not Broadway, but theater show.
08:51Other than that, I like to read, watch TV.
08:55I'm watching The Bear right now, talk to friends.
08:58And then I go on and off of hobbies.
09:01I used to crochet and then I stop and then I'll probably pick it up again
09:04and then stop. Yeah.
09:07And then the French, trying to learn French, I'll do it for like a good month
09:11and then stop.
09:11So it's just finding new things to pick up on the road to pass the time,
09:15because we do have a lot of time when we are in between matches.
09:19What's up?
09:20No, I was deciding I saw the Michael Jackson one in New York,
09:24and it was amazing, so maybe that again.
09:27And I think they have I don't know if they have the Wiz here.
09:30I don't know how to look either that or something that I've never seen before.
09:34But I think they have Lion King.
09:36I've already seen that like six times, so I can make it a seven.
09:43Yeah, you mentioned Serena and Venus just a moment ago.
09:48I just want to go back to the outfit question.
09:50There are some fans online who are convinced that your dress this year
09:54bears quite striking resemblance to Serena Williams 2019
09:58sort of cut out dress.
09:59Yeah. Are you able to say whether or not she inspired your outfits
10:03or has it bypassed outfits at all?
10:05No, she did not.
10:06But I think that Serena has just done like every iconic dress
10:11fit in the game that unintentionally you can like have something inspired by her.
10:16I was like similar to my Australian Open outfit this year.
10:20Some people thought I was inspired by her, which it wasn't.
10:22But I just feel like Serena is just such an icon that
10:26everybody can have like inspiration for her.
10:28Like she's the she's the original.
10:31So, yeah, I take it as an acknowledgement, but I'm not going to sit here and lie to you
10:35and be like, yeah, it was we took this picture and we wanted to do that.
10:38But I will say that she's just done everything in tennis.
10:41I think when it comes to style that at some point,
10:44sometimes things just look similar because she's done it all.
10:47Did you design your outfit this year?
10:50No, this year was all all new balance.
10:51I kind of told them I wanted to play with cutouts
10:54just because like there's not much you can do with the white.
10:57But that was all all all of them.
11:00I usually kind of tell them I don't really ever design anything.
11:03Like I don't draw it, but I tell them what I want.
11:05And then they kind of like put it into into a nice way.
11:12Yeah. Sorry, more of a.
11:15Yes. Sorry.
11:17More of a technical question from you.
11:19During your match, you actually did hit a lot of like love shots.
11:22Was that actually done intentional or like
11:24was it something that you and Brad talked about?
11:26But yeah, I mean, for today, playing against her,
11:30she likes to play first strike tennis.
11:32And a lot of times when you play these big hitters,
11:34they like the ball at one height.
11:35So, yeah, it was intentional to change the height on her.
11:40I got a couple of things.
11:42Could you share with us what books you have been reading?
11:46And also our friend Brad is one of the great personalities in the game.
11:50Can you give us a fun update on any new superstitions and quirky things?
11:56Do we have anything there?
11:57And if not, how about something serious?
11:59Yeah. So books I've been I'm reading small worlds.
12:02Currently, I did what I read.
12:06RuPaul's autobiography, Viola Davis, I've read.
12:10And then fourth wing, a couple like fictional books.
12:14And then with Brad, I guess, I mean, I did give him a little crap
12:17about his shoes that he wore yesterday.
12:19I said they were ugly and he was like quite offended.
12:23But he has on some better, better shoes.
12:25I think he's wearing like dons today.
12:27So I told him they look better and superstitions.
12:31He doesn't have many superstitions.
12:33He just doesn't like if I start serving before I hit overheads.
12:37That's like the the one thing he hates because he thinks like
12:40my shoulder is going to fall off if I don't do it.
12:43And sometimes I intentionally don't do it just to like make him mad.
12:47And I think that's just like a thing.
12:50If you tell me not to do something, I kind of just will do the opposite.
12:53So, yeah. Yeah.
12:56We always like to make fun of Brad, but he takes it.
12:58He takes it good. He just laughs.
13:00I think now he's catching up on it.
13:02My sarcasm. And so he knows what I'm joking now.
13:08Hi. What would you say is the biggest way?
13:12In which things changed for you by.
13:15From. I think a lot of pressure like lifted, I think,
13:22because that was something that, you know, I had a lot of expectations
13:24on myself to do and same with other people.
13:27And although I feel still young and felt young, but I guess I felt
13:31like I needed to have to happen like now.
13:34And, you know, I never wanted to take my career or like any moment for granted.
13:39I never want to say, well, I'll get there eventually.
13:41And then it never happens.
13:42And there's a lot of players in the past who've had that happen to them.
13:46So I take every moment like seriously, every semifinal, I record a final.
13:50It's not I don't go in the I'll have many more just relax
13:53because you don't know that nothing's promised.
13:54So I think having that, I just feel like, you know,
13:57regardless of whatever happens in my career, I always have that to my name.
14:00But I have a lot more aspirations, obviously, than just winning one.
14:04But I think the start of one just gives you a taste
14:07and gives you the belief that you can do it again.
14:10Last question.
14:12Yep.
14:14You won an impressive 80% of points of the net today,
14:17and I was wondering if you see you venturing more and more into the net
14:20as the tournament progresses?
14:22Yeah, I do like going to the net.
14:25Yeah, it's something I am working on and obviously like playing doubles.
14:29It's helped me a lot.
14:30And I do feel like I go I start falling better once I get some doubles matches in.
14:34So maybe I'll do it some more because I'll play.
14:36I think I play doubles tomorrow.
14:38I just always find that I just feel more comfortable
14:40once I get like one doubles match in because I get some balls like hit at me
14:44and I can kind of feel it out.
14:46So, yeah, I do like being at the net, especially on grass.
