00:00And now there are all sorts of players getting involved and this game is just going to be
00:05one that is remembered for all the wrong reasons.
00:08Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the top 20 sporting events
00:14ruined by morons.
00:16Have you thought about it much since then?
00:18Well you do on occasions, the detail is just very graphic.
00:22For this list we'll be looking at times sports events were stopped,
00:25marred, or interfered with for stupid reasons.
00:29Which in turn ruined it for everyone else in the process.
00:32Which incident on our list includes the biggest moron?
00:35Let us know in the comments.
00:39Number 20.
00:40Flyers fans throw bracelets on the ice.
00:44Alex Ovechkin and Wayne Simmons motioned up to the crowd who were throwing some debris
00:50out onto the ice.
00:51An NHL playoff game between the Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals in 2016
00:57went from promising to absolutely disastrous.
01:01After a questionable hit by Pierre-Edouard Belmar on Dmitry Orlov,
01:06a scuffle ensued amongst players.
01:08When no players from the Capitals were given penalties,
01:11Flyers fans let the referees know their disappointment by pelting bracelets on the ice.
01:16The bracelets were given to those in attendance to honor the memory of then Flyers owner Ed
01:21Snyder, who had passed away a week earlier.
01:23The players were given a pair of bracelets to mark the end of the game,
01:28Ed Snyder, who had passed away a week earlier.
01:31Fans were asked to stop and when they refused to do so,
01:34the team was assessed a two-minute minor as a result.
01:37We got stuff flying again out of the crowd.
01:47Capitals with Backstrom, Oshie, Johansson.
01:50They're going to get a penalty.
01:51I think they're getting a penalty.
01:52They're going to call a penalty like they did in Florida.
01:55Yep.
01:55Philadelphia sports fans often get a bad rep,
01:58and this incident didn't help by any means.
02:02Number 19.
02:03Bottle Gates
02:05Facing the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Cleveland Browns were on their last drive in an attempt
02:10to win the game trailing by five.
02:12On a fourth and two, quarterback Tim Couch threw a pass,
02:15which was caught by wide receiver Quincy Morgan.
02:17The Browns were awarded the first down.
02:19They were already on their next play when the previous play was then being reviewed.
02:24Replay buzz prior to the snap.
02:29We'll be looking to see if the last pass was incomplete or complete.
02:33It was later ruled an incompletion.
02:35After a few, the pass is incomplete.
02:38First down, Jacksonville.
02:40The Browns no longer had any downs, and the Jaguars were set to win.
02:44NFL rule states that a play can no longer be reviewed if the next play is already underway.
02:49But for some reason, that was forgotten.
02:52Fans in attendance were not pleased,
02:55so much so that they began throwing plastic bottles onto the field.
02:58It got so out of control that even though there were 48 seconds left in the play clock,
03:03the referees called off the game.
03:06Number 18.
03:07Water bottle thrown at Dimitri Payet.
03:10Ready to proceed?
03:11We're not, as Payet has been struck by a bottle, it seems.
03:16Well, this is just ridiculous.
03:18Just four minutes into a League One match between Lyon and Marseille,
03:21midfielder Dimitri Payet was set to take a corner kick
03:24when he was suddenly hit in the head by a water bottle thrown by a fan.
03:29Payet was in pain and was attended to by medical staff.
03:32Fortunately, Payet was able to get on his feet and return to the bench.
03:36The game was then put on hold.
03:38And while it was announced the match would resume and Lyon players returned to the pitch,
03:43Marseille players remained in the dressing room,
03:45where Payet was still experiencing shock after what had transpired.
03:49More time passed and the match was ultimately called off.
03:53It was indeed a disappointing way for a game to end.
03:57Number 17.
03:59Spectator lets Arak go onto the track.
04:01The biggest and most infamous highlight from the 1980 Bathurst 1000 racing competition
04:06was when racer Dick Johnson's car hit a rock.
04:18The rock came onto the track after a fan had supposedly thrown it on there.
04:23Johnson attempted to pass it but failed to do so,
04:26instead hitting it and going straight into the fence.
04:29Worst of all, Johnson was leading.
04:31But as a result of this incident,
04:32his day had come to an end and he was left with $40,000 in damages.
04:42Years later, it was revealed that the boulder ended up on the track
04:45after a fan accidentally kicked it onto the track while playing with it.
04:49Lesson here is, when attending a race, or any event for that matter,
04:53stay away from any rocks.
04:55Number 16.
04:57Football's Battle of Bromel Lane.
04:59Here's the one time on our list where the fans weren't involved.
05:03In 2002, Sheffield United and West Brom Albion notoriously faced off at Bromel Lane Stadium.
05:10Throughout the match, the players just wouldn't stop being aggressive and it cost them.
05:14The match was littered with endless red cards and injuries.
05:30United players were particularly unruly,
05:34either deliberately bending the rules or straight up headbutting their opponents.
05:39By the 82nd minute, Sheffield was down to 6 men and the game had to be abandoned.
05:49The players and manager were either banned,
05:52fined or accused of cheating with the match awarded to West Brom a week later.
05:56Players can get hotheaded too, but it's always better to play it cool on the pitch.
06:01Number 15.
06:02Bradford City Stadium Fire.
06:06May 11th, 1985.
06:09Bradford City AFC and Lincoln City FC were facing off at Valley Parade
06:13and the former was celebrating their promotion to the third division championship.
06:17But three minutes before halftime, play was stopped.
06:21Officials had been alerted that an area of the stands, Block G, was going ablaze.
06:26The flames grew and people in attendance were asked to evacuate.
06:3856 people lost their lives, with 265 others having suffered injuries.
06:44Many forensic experts have attributed the fire occurring as a result of either a discarded match
06:49or a cigarette having lit the stands, which at the time were made out of wood.
06:55Number 14.
06:56Peter Hoare's invasion of the field.
07:15During the World Cup qualifying match in 1997 between Australia and Iran,
07:19a spectator named Peter Hoare arrived in the field and cut open Iran's goal net.
07:24The game was delayed, and when it resumed, Iran made the most of the opportunity.
07:28Australia's initial lead of 2-0 was cut short when Iran went on to score two goals,
07:33with the game ending in a tie and allowing Iran to advance.
07:37Hoare's act was considered a turning point in the match,
07:40with many seeing it as an indirect cause of the socceroos collapse.
07:54So, maybe the event wasn't ruined for Team Iran, but perhaps more so for Australia.
08:08Regardless, it still made for an unnecessary delay.
08:11Unfortunately, this isn't the only incident Hoare has been involved in,
08:15having crashed several other events, including an Australian Open tennis match and the 1997
08:21Melbourne Cup.
08:22Number 13.
08:24The attack on Monica Seles.
08:48With eight Grand Slam titles to her name and ranked number one in the world at the time of
08:51this event, Monica Seles was a powerhouse and dominating women's tennis.
08:56However, her tennis career would take a tragic turn when she was attacked by an assailant
09:00with a knife during a match at the Hamburg Open in 1993.
09:05Initially, no one had understood what had taken place until Seles fell to the ground.
09:10Luckily, the attacker was apprehended.
09:12While Seles sustained injuries that were deemed non-life-threatening,
09:15and she was able to eventually recover, she took a two-year absence from the sport.
09:20To witness someone get attacked in such a vicious manner was terrifying and many consider
09:24it the darkest chapter in the history of the sport.
09:28Number 12.
09:29Vander Lee DeLima gets attacked.
09:32Vander Lee DeLima was leading the men's Olympic marathon in 2004 with four miles to go when
09:38Irish priest Neil Horan ran onto the road and pushed DeLima into the crowd.
09:43Fortunately, spectators helped DeLima get free, but it took him nearly half a minute
09:48to get back onto the course.
09:49He was passed by two other runners but still managed to come in third.
09:53Many believed DeLima would have most likely won if it hadn't been for Horan,
09:57and it certainly put a damper on the event.
09:59His reasoning for interfering?
10:01To prepare people for the second coming, of course.
10:04This wouldn't be the only time that he interfered at an event,
10:07having run on the track of the British Grand Prix in 2003 and causing absolute pandemonium.
10:17Number 11.
10:18Fan sign causes crash at the 2021 Tour de France.
10:31Crashes are commonplace during this competition, but none have ever happened quite like this.
10:36In 2021, German cyclist Tony Martin was riding through the race's first stage
10:41when he was suddenly hit by a sign that a woman put in his way to show a TV camera.
10:47He fell, resulting in an entire peloton of cyclists to naturally tumble down.
11:01The incident went viral, with some going so far as to call it the worst crash
11:05in Tour de France history.
11:07The fan was arrested and fined 1200 euros.
11:10Some things are just not worth doing to get airtime.
11:17Number 10.
11:30Monday night football laser attack.
11:32These little gadgets can create some serious problems,
11:36not just for airplanes, but on the field too.
11:39During a Monday night football game from Mexico City,
11:41Houston Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler was often being harassed by a green light.
11:46Someone in attendance was using a high-powered laser to distract him.
12:03The game was stopped, with officials asking security to please find and eliminate the
12:07interference.
12:08Unfortunately, the culprit was never found or reprimanded.
12:18After the game, Osweiler was noticeably upset regarding the incident.
12:22Number 9.
12:38Utah Jazz false whistle.
12:40Sometimes fans just want to give their team a helping hand,
12:44but in doing so, they ruin the fairness of the game.
12:47During a game between the Utah Jazz and Golden State Warriors back in 2009,
12:51a whistle blow was heard, in turn stopping all action on the court.
12:58However, that whistle did not come from a referee.
13:01Quickly realizing this, the Jazz players used the opportunity to slam an easy dunk.
13:06The Utah Jazz were clearly given an unfair advantage, but the point was awarded anyway.
13:11It turns out the whistle came from a fan in the stands who was dressed up as a referee.
13:24He placed himself right behind the Golden State Warriors basket,
13:27and thanks to his outfit, it was pretty easy to find.
13:37Number 8.
13:38Drunk cricket tackle.
13:40I think this guy is at the wrong game.
13:43Hey, rugby is in the other stadium.
13:46After a few drinks, an Australian fan attending a cricket game between
13:49Pakistan and Australia bolted onto the pitch and tackled Pakistan's Khalid Latif,
13:54outraging officials.
13:56He supposedly did it on a dare.
13:58The fan, whose name is David James Frazier, was escorted out by security,
14:03but the incident led to Pakistani sports minister demanding
14:06alcohol be removed from Australian cricket grounds.
14:09The WACA grounds were cleared, however,
14:12and Frazier was fined $9,000 on top of a ban for life.
14:16Number 7.
14:17Evander Holyfield vs. Riddick Bowe's boxing fan man.
14:28If there's any confusion as to how the fans felt about this stunt,
14:32just ask the flying fists shortly after he landed.
14:35Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe were boxing it out at Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip.
14:40Out of nowhere, a person fell from the sky wearing a paraglider and a parachute.
14:53As he touched the ring, the crowd and security descended on him,
14:56letting him know their displeasure with the unfolding events.
14:59The fight was delayed and the man was rushed to the hospital,
15:02later joking that despite it being a heavyweight fight, he was the only guy who got knocked out.
15:12Number 6.
15:13PAOK vs. Olympiacos fan flares.
15:16Hell hath no fury like a football fan scorned.
15:19The atmosphere was tense during the 2016 match between PAOK and Olympiacos.
15:25The fans were riled up, just waiting for something to set them off.
15:29When PAOK midfielder Robert Mack was sent off after being tripped by an opposing player
15:34and no call was made, fans had had enough.
15:37Down 2-1 to Olympiacos, flares were lit all around the stadium, illuminating the sky in red.
15:44The flares were thrown onto the pitch and with tension still mounting,
15:47the riot police were called onto the field.
15:49Officials and players were escorted off the pitch and the match was suspended.
15:53By that point, it wasn't much of a match anymore, it was an impending war zone.
15:58Number 5.
15:59State of Origin's moment of no silence.
16:02Imagine trying to pay respect to someone while some
16:04intoxicated individuals decide to start shouting in the background.
16:08One of Australia's greatest distance runners, Ron Clark,
16:11had just passed away at 78 years old in 2015.
16:15At the start of a State of Origin 2 rugby game in Melbourne,
16:18the crowd was asked for a minute of silence to honour Clark's memory.
16:28But as the players tried to pay respects, some members of the crowd began jeering
16:32unrelated chants, angering fellow attendees who began shouting back.
16:39The disappointment and shock from the players was palpable,
16:42it was pure disrespect, nothing more, nothing less.
16:51Number 4.
16:52NFL Snowball Game.
16:57Whenever snow comes to town, it can be tempting to throw a couple of snowballs.
17:09But this winter fight caused some serious trouble.
17:12It was 1995.
17:13The San Diego Chargers were up against the New York Giants,
17:16where a major snowstorm left the Giants' stadium seats covered in snow.
17:20As a result, many fans decided to start throwing snowballs onto the field,
17:24distracting and hurting several people, including players, referees, coaches and cameramen.
17:42Despite the crowd being warned to stop, the chaos continued,
17:45resulting in the Giants almost being forced to forfeit the game.
17:55Although the Chargers went on to win and secure a spot in the playoffs,
18:13their victory was shadowed by this unfortunate event.
18:24Number 3.
18:32Mommy enters the boxing ring.
18:34No mother wants to see their child beaten up, but this went from 0 to 100 really quick.
18:39In 1989, light heavyweight Brits Tony Wilson and Steve McCarthy competed in a boxing match.
18:45At one point during the match, McCarthy had the upper hand,
18:48knocking Wilson down and pinning him against the ropes.
18:51All of a sudden, a stiletto heel slammed into the back of McCarthy's head,
18:54resulting in a severe injury that required hospital treatment.
18:58It was Wilson's mother, Mina Wilson, who had blacked out,
19:01squeezed past security and began attacking her son's opponent.
19:05A rematch was eventually scheduled, but this crazy occurrence certainly put a damper on the event.
19:10Number 2.
19:11PSV vs. IJACS football smoke bomb.
19:14If this happened while we were in the stadium, we would definitely bolt for the exit.
19:19During a Netherlands football match between PSV and IJACS,
19:22everything halted as black smoke filled the stands.
19:2513 smoke bombs were lit, the aftermath being visible for miles outside the stadium.
19:30The police believed it was part of a coordinated action to protest stadium bans.
19:34But it wasn't a popular decision, as the bombs were met with boos from the audience.
19:40The match did eventually continue, but 15 people were injured during the incident.
19:44Before we unveil our top picks, here are a few dishonorable mentions.
19:48Disaster at the 2015 FAI Cup Final.
19:51Several fans overshadowed a match by heckling stewards and damaging seats at Aviva Stadium.
19:58Steve Bartman.
19:59This Cubs fan tried to catch a ball that he wasn't supposed to catch, and the rest is history.

20:25Number 1. Malice at the Palace.
20:31What started out as a scuffle turned into something far darker.
20:35During the conclusion of a regular season game where the Pacers dominated the Pistons back in 2004,
20:40Meta Santaford Artest, known at the time as Ron Artest,
20:44committed a foul on Pistons player Ben Wallace, who then shoved Artest.
20:55The two got physical but things got out of control when a fan added to the incident
20:59by throwing a drink at Artest, prompting him to climb into the stance.
21:15The arena exploded into chaos between players, fans and security.
21:19Even after the fighting stopped and the players headed to the locker rooms,
21:22fans continued to throw drinks. In retrospect, it's clear that the
21:26entire incident could have been avoided had fans not escalated the situation further.
