00:00It started out as family fun, it started with me and my kids, but then it was just about
00:07making a video and then making the next video.
00:11Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for infamous controversies about
00:17family-themed YouTube channels that shocked everyone.
00:21And my kids are literally starving. I hesitate to say this because it's going to sound like
00:25I'm like a mean barbarian.
00:26Plus, we'll explore what public backlash or legal consequences they faced.
00:33Ryan's World
00:35Ryan's World, formerly known as Ryan's Toy Review, is one of the biggest channels on the platform.
00:41The youngster, who plays and chats about toys, games,
00:44and adventure parks, captured the attention of children everywhere.
00:48Lone Gwon
00:53But in 2019, news about his mother, Lone Gwon, was disclosed.
00:58In 2002, she was an 18-year-old student attending University of Houston
01:03and was caught trying to shoplift clothes from a JCPenney store.
01:07Lone Gwon was arrested in 2002 for stealing $93 worth of clothes.
01:12Gwon received a $150 fine, 40 hours of community service, and six months of probation.
01:19Shortly after, however, she was arrested for breaking the terms of her probation
01:23and was sentenced to 60 days in prison.
01:26Gwon was released after 30 days.
01:35Jordan Cheyenne
01:36There have been plenty of accusations of YouTubers faking emotional segments for views,
01:42but few have been so exposed as Jordan Cheyenne was in 2021
01:47when she uploaded the since-deleted video titled,
01:50We Are Heartbroken.
01:54In it, Cheyenne and her son Christian film from their car,
01:57discussing the disease their dog was diagnosed with.
02:00In an accidentally left in part, Cheyenne can be seen coaching her son,
02:05telling him how to cry, where to rest his head, and what expressions to use.
02:12She even gets him to pose for the thumbnail.
02:15It's pretty spectacular, and we mean that in the most disgusted way possible.
02:19As backlash grew, Cheyenne apologized publicly,
02:23which was also criticized for being insincere.
02:26She then scrubbed her channel and social media profiles before going on a hiatus.
02:32Micah Stauffer
02:35In 2017, after years of searching for a special needs child to help,
02:40Micah Stauffer and her husband James, the two who vlogged under the name The Stauffer Life,
02:46finally found a preschool-aged child to adopt into their family.
02:50The parents, who share three biological children,
02:53as well as Micah's daughter from a previous relationship,
02:57adopted Huxley from China in 2017.
03:00Beyond asking for donations to help raise him, it all seemed to be going well.
03:05But by 2020, things changed drastically.
03:08After months of speculation, Stauffer posted a video that they had rehomed their adopted child.
03:14The couple said that the stress of caring for a severely special needs child
03:22was the leading factor for their decision.
03:24Of course, there was a massive amount of backlash from the public.
03:28So much so that Stauffer deleted her channels and has been inactive on social media since.
03:38Spiritual Tasha Mama
03:40Going by Spiritual Tasha Mama and now Spiritual Natasha on YouTube,
03:45Tasha Miley is a controversial figure on the platform.
03:49On one hand, she has helped promote nursing children and the vegan lifestyle.
03:54On the other, Miley has been criticized for a certain story.
03:58In 2017, she spoke about the time she and her husband were intimate
04:03while she was in the act of breastfeeding her son.
04:07She later clarified that the child was sleeping at the time,
04:10but it still seems like an icky situation that made many uncomfortable.
04:17The public has also pointed out other videos that have been interpreted as inappropriate
04:21between Miley and her children.
04:34Sam and Nia
04:35Pregnancy announcement videos are often endearing.
04:38Other times, not so much.
04:41One released by the channels Sam and Nia, Christian family vloggers, was more of the latter.
04:49In 2015, they filmed a video involving Sam sneakily dipping a pregnancy test
04:55into Nia's unflushed toilet water, then surprising her with the positive result.
05:00Regardless of whether it was staged,
05:03this sparked a debate about privacy in relationships and women's autonomy.
05:09Not long after, it was discovered that Sam had, at one point,
05:14had a profile on the infamous affair dating website Ashley Madison.
05:18The duo released an apology video where Sam mentioned that Nia and God forgave him,
05:24which only drew further criticism.
05:26After a brief hiatus, the family returned to the platform.
05:33The LeBrant Fam
05:34As one of the most popular family-themed channels,
05:37you'd expect the LeBrant Fam to be squeaky clean of scandal.
05:41But nope.
05:42Firstly, in 2018, as the wildfire swept over California,
05:46the family put out a video that they were ordered to leave their home.
05:54However, neighbors of the LeBrants claim their area was never given the evacuation order.
06:01Secondly, in 2021, the channel released a video that implied their child had cancer
06:06when it was a health scare.
06:12Thirdly, in 2022, they put out a documentary on abortion,
06:16taking a pro-life stance but calling it pro-love instead.
06:20In it, they shockingly compare the number of lives lost to the Holocaust to those from abortions,
06:26implying that the latter is worse than the former.
06:29Understandably, people were livid.
06:36Toy Freaks
06:37With family channels, there's always a conversation about parents
06:41potentially exploiting their children for views.
06:44With Toy Freaks, it's no misunderstanding, as it was clear this was the case.
06:50Gregory Chisholm encouraged his daughters to act like babies
06:54and do humiliating things on camera.
06:59It was pretty uncomfortable.
07:03But the final straw came when he filmed multiple videos of himself
07:07walking into the bathroom as they bathed
07:09and throwing an animal at them in what he claimed was a joke.
07:17One clip featured a frog that terrified the girls.
07:20Experts stated that these antics could have a lasting and damaging effect on their mental health.
07:26With the litany of incidents, the Toy Freaks channel was terminated in 2017.
07:34Fantastic Adventures
07:36Created by Michelle Hobson, the Fantastic Adventures channel showcased Hobson's
07:40biological and adopted children and their antics.
07:44But in 2019, horrible things came to light.
07:48How, after all of those details, Michelle managed to keep the kids is a mystery.
07:53Hobson's adult daughter called authorities, and when they arrived,
07:57the cops found the children in a tragic state, clearly malnourished.
08:01Allegations soon surfaced that Hobson and her two adult sons
08:05had physically abused the children if they refused to appear in a video
08:09or didn't perform the way Hobson wanted.
08:12Her Fantastic Adventures YouTube channel had over 800,000 subscribers.
08:17While Hobson was indicted on 30 counts and pleaded not guilty,
08:21she passed away before the trial, and the charges were dismissed as a result.
08:25In 2023, however, the Hackney brothers were charged with multiple counts of misconduct.
08:33Family 05
08:35Originally known as Daddy 05, before creating the other channel Family 05,
08:41Michael and Heather Martin were known for their daily vlogs and joke videos.
08:49But as their popularity increased, so did the video's content.
08:54So-called pranks seemed to involve the physical and mental abuse of their children.
09:00As the scandal grew, two of the kids were taken from the household
09:03and into the care of their biological mom.
09:06In 2017, facing charges of child neglect, the Martins handed in an Alford plea,
09:16which allowed them to acknowledge the evidence but maintain innocence.
09:20As such, they received five years of probation.
09:23While their channels were terminated by YouTube,
09:26Michael would return in a new channel called The Martin Family,
09:30which is supposedly run by their kids.
09:33I really wish we had a crowbar right now.
09:35Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel

09:518 Passengers
09:53After starting her channel 8 Passengers in 2015 about family life with her husband Kevin
09:58and their six children, there were several concerns with Ruby Frankie
10:02when it came to allusions to her extreme disciplining methods.
10:07In 2023, no one was ready for how far she went.
10:11I just had a 12-year-old boy show up here at my front door asking for help.
10:16One of her children managed to escape the house and get help,
10:19which led to the police arresting Frankie, Kevin,
10:22and their business partner, Connections Jodi Hildebrandt.
10:26Without bail and behind bars sits a woman who once freely roamed around her home filming her family.
10:32Most of their children had signs of abuse and were taken into care after getting treatment.
10:37Frankie and Hildebrandt were charged with six felony child abuse charges and held without bail.
10:42Unsurprisingly, 8 Passengers was banned from YouTube,
10:46and Frankie's other social media profiles were deleted.
10:49Experts say Frankie's videos, even the deleted ones, could be used against her in court.
10:54On a lighter note, let us know which YouTube family channel you think is wholesome and unproblematic.
11:00Guess what? Someone's going to be going to public school very soon.
