A new exhibition opening at Denmark’s National Museum is exploring the history and legacy of a mysterious female Viking sorceress, known as… the Völva.

00:00The vulva had a very, very special role, and people were very frightened of her, even gods

00:09and strong vikings were afraid of the vulva.

00:13And of course you were afraid of a person that can speak with the spirits, and that

00:18can look into the future and maybe change something in that future.

00:32The roots of the viking vulva probably goes centuries back.

00:39When the Romans explained that the Germanic tribes from the north, when their armies came

00:48down into the Mediterranean, they had a follower, a woman, an old woman, who could foresee the

00:59outcome of a battle.

01:02And she would also be the one, when they took prisoners, who cut the throat of the prisoners.
