00:00I'm Alice Morrison, an adventurer and writer.

00:08I've cycled across Africa and run across the Sahara.

00:12Now, I'm on the trail of a mysterious and forgotten Arabian civilization, the Nabataeans.

00:20Are we standing in the birthplace of written Arabic?

00:24I think I would say that, yes.

00:26They were nomads who forged a rich civilization here in the harsh desert conditions of Western

00:32Arabia from the 4th century BCE.

00:36They ruled for around three centuries until they were swallowed up by the Roman Empire.

00:41Now all that's left are the enigmatic remains of their great desert cities of Petra and

00:47Hegra in modern-day Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

00:51And this is where I have come to explore, to find out how they survived and thrived

00:56here, who they were and even what they looked like.

01:03I'll investigate their ancient sites, delving deep into their secret tombs and sanctuaries.
