00:00On this day in space.
00:04In 1965, after a four-day mission and 62 orbits, NASA's
00:08Gemini 4 mission returned to Earth with an Atlantic Ocean splashdown.
00:12Gemini 4 was NASA's tenth crewed spaceflight. It also included the first
00:16spacewalk by an American astronaut, Ed White, who floated outside the spacecraft
00:20for about 20 minutes. White was able to push himself out of the capsule
00:24by using a handheld maneuvering oxygen jet gun. After three
00:28minutes, the fuel ran out, and White had to return to the spacecraft by pulling on the
00:32tether and twisting his body. This flight was the first in American history to
00:36perform scientific experiments in space. Eleven in total.
00:40And that's what happened on this day in space.
