00:00 On this day in space.
00:03 In 1965, after a four-day mission and 62 orbits,
00:07 NASA's Gemini 4 mission returned to Earth with an Atlantic Ocean splashdown.
00:12 Gemini 4 was NASA's tenth crewed spaceflight.
00:15 It also included the first spacewalk by an American astronaut, Ed White,
00:18 who floated outside the spacecraft for about 20 minutes.
00:21 White was able to push himself out of the capsule by using a hand-held maneuvering oxygen jet gun.
00:27 After three minutes, the fuel ran out, and White had to return to the spacecraft
00:31 by pulling on the tether and twisting his body.
00:34 This flight was the first in American history to perform scientific experiments in space--11 in total.
00:40 And that's what happened on this day in space.
