At Art Basel, art cannot be contained to the exhibition booth

June in Switzerland can only mean one thing: Art Basel. The world’s most prestigious art fair opens to the public on Thursday (13 June) – expect fields of wheat, unusual venues, and even an animatronic gorilla.

00:02 - We've chosen empty stores, restaurants, hotels,

00:27 a car ramp leading down to a bunker

00:30 underneath the Congress Center.

00:32 And in all of these places, there are projects by artists,

00:36 half of which were newly developed for Parkour.

00:42 Alvaro Barrington created a structure

00:45 inspired by his grandmother's home in Granada

00:49 inside a shop here in Basel that specializes

00:52 on importing products from Africa to Switzerland.

00:55 And on the outside of that structure,

00:57 he installed paintings of different flowers

01:00 from the Caribbean.

01:24 - I think it's really important to have this public moment

01:27 of the fair where people who may not go

01:30 into the fairgrounds will discover art.

01:34 And they might do so even without knowing

01:36 that they will discover art on their way to work

01:39 or while they're grocery shopping.
