The little voices inside Riley's head know her inside and out but everything changes when there is a new Emotion: Anxiety.
Transcript
00:00Hi, my name is Kelsey Mann, and I am the director on Inside Out 2.
00:05And I'm Mark Nielsen, and I'm the producer on Inside Out 2.
00:08We found something, I think, that was sequel-worthy, because that's the only reason why we would
00:14tell a story is if we have a story worth telling.
00:16You know, it was a profound movie, that first one, right?
00:19Just the simple message of embrace sadness was like, no one really thought about it that
00:24way.
00:25It was a new way of seeing sadness and engaging with that, and I think what we love about
00:28this film is we've got the chance to introduce new emotions and more complex emotions in
00:35this one.
00:36Ones that are a little more, you know, sometimes they make you feel bad, and that's part of
00:40their job.
00:41They're not as straight up as the first ones were.
00:43They're there to help Riley through these teenage years.
00:46So I think we've really got a subject matter in this film of anxiety in your life and how
00:52it can come on strong and learning how to manage it that we found to be like worth telling
00:57a story around.
00:58I knew I wanted new emotions to show up.
01:01Anxiety rose to the top pretty quickly for me, as I'm like, oh, there's something here.
01:05Not only because I feel like it's something I could relate to, both now and also when
01:10I was that age.
01:11We had a lot.
01:12In the beginning, we had eight other emotions show up with anxiety.
01:16I really wanted Joy to feel overwhelmed now that Riley's a teenager, and suddenly, you
01:20know, Joy's a little bit like a parent to Riley, right?
01:23So I can kind of feel that way as a parent, too.
01:25Suddenly, you know, your kid's going through becoming a teenager, and it's hard to keep
01:30up with what's going on.
01:32I had Joy being overwhelmed, but I also overwhelmed the audience because there's too much to keep
01:37track of, and anxiety just kind of lost her in the crowd.
01:41We have to cut these emotions down and simplify, and so we took it down to four.
01:45Ennui is actually a French term.
01:48More complex emotions are showing up, and we wanted Joy, who's been with Riley since
01:53she was a kid, to suddenly feel like she's out of her element and doesn't know what's
01:57going on.
01:59And so if we have a character that comes in, she's like, I don't even, what are you?
02:02She's bilingual.
02:03Yeah, she's bilingual.
02:04You know, ennui is definitely like this kind of like laid back, like, uh-huh, yeah, whatever.
02:10It's similar to boredom is probably a similar emotion.
02:14Yeah, totally.
02:15So we always saw her on a phone, and we're like, she could drive the console from the
02:19phone.
02:20That's super fun.
02:21So we totally leaned into that.
02:22We've had theater screens in mind for this movie from the beginning.
02:26Even back in development, because one of the first decisions you have to make on the film
02:30is what aspect ratio is the film going to be in?
02:34And we decided early on because, and you want the story to drive that decision.
02:37And because it's about expanding Riley's world and her mind and big console, more emotions,
02:43it made sense to like have a wider aspect ratio than the first film.
02:48First film was 185.
02:49And so we can take advantage of that screen space and use it in the storytelling of Joy
02:54having to traverse to the outer reaches of Riley's mind.
02:58I wanted to, you know, treat this film as an original, you know?
03:02Even though it's a sequel, I still wanted to bring a sense of originality to it.
03:06And so I don't want to just do the same thing again.
03:08I want to be true to what the first film did, but I also want to deliver something that's
03:13unique and new.
03:14It's pretty cool, and it's very, you know, different from the first film.
03:19We are so excited to be taking this movie to you.
03:23And you were able to see Inside Out 2.
03:27See it in theaters on the biggest screen you can when it comes out in June.
03:32Come on!
03:33Riley needs us.
03:34Have I ever steered you wrong before?
03:37Many times.
03:38Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
03:39What is that?
03:40It's a sarcasm!
03:41Sarcasm?
03:42Boy, are we so lucky we ran into you guys!
03:43Boy, are we so lucky we ran into you guys!
03:44Wow.
03:45Those guys are jerks.
03:46Wow.
03:47Those guys are jerks.
