00:13In a significant development aimed at ending the ongoing war in Gaza, the United Nations

00:18Security Council adopted a U.S.-drafted resolution urging Hamas to accept the latest ceasefire

00:25and hostage release deal proposed. The resolution garnered widespread support, with 14 members

00:32voting in favor while Russia and one of the five other permanent members with a veto power

00:37abstained from voting.

00:39The resolution comes on the heels of a proposal backed by President Joe Biden which aims to

00:45bring the end to the devastation and suffering in the Gaza Strip. Biden a few weeks ago had

00:51outlined a three-phase plan, with the first phase lasting six weeks and consisting of

00:56a ceasefire, withdrawal of Israeli forces from populated areas of Gaza, the release

01:01of number of hostages and the release of Palestinian prisoners too. The second phase will usher

01:07into permanent cessation of hostilities provided Hamas abides by the commitment laid out in

01:13the agreement and releases all the remaining living hostages. The final phase will then

01:17involve the reconstruction of Gaza and the return of the remains of hostages to their

01:22families.

01:23Ahead of the vote, the U.S. mission to the United Nations highlighted the significance

01:28of this plan, stating that it will enable a pause in the war, the freeing of hostages

01:33and an immediate surge in humanitarian assistance, among other things.

01:38Israel has accepted this proposal and the Security Council has an opportunity to speak

01:43with one voice and call on Hamas to do the same, the U.S. stated.

01:48The ambassador, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the urgency

01:53of ending the needless suffering caused by the ongoing war.

01:57Colleagues, after eight months of devastation and the pain and trauma, what is needed now

02:02more than ever is for the fighting to end sustainably, she stated.

02:07In response to the resolution, Hamas also released a statement welcoming the aspects

02:12regarding the permanent ceasefire in Gaza, potentially signalling a willingness to engage

02:17in the proposal.

02:18The vote comes as Secretary of State Antony Blinken is also in the Middle East, actively

02:23involved in further negotiations to secure the ceasefire and hostage agreement.

02:29Blinken also highlighted the critical nature of this moment, urging governments and people

02:33throughout the region to press Hamas to accept the deal as it presents an opportunity to

02:39alleviate the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, secure the release of hostages and

02:44pave the way for a tense and more durable peace for the security in the region.

02:50While the adoption of the resolution in the Security Council is a significant step, the

02:54ultimate success of the plan hinges upon Hamas' total acceptance of the proposed terms, which

03:00seems unlikely till now.

03:02The international community is awaiting Hamas' response, with the hope that this initiative

03:08will mark the beginning of a new era of stability and progress in the Middle East.
