00:23 In June 1940, there was a growing realization amongst the few Allies left that ending the

00:30 Second World War would mean landing powerful forces to German-occupied Western Europe.

00:37 It was not until May 1943, when President Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill met

00:44 in Washington, that planning for an assault on the coast of northwestern France became

00:48 the major priority for the Allies.

00:51 Codenamed Operation Overlord, it was a complex plan that would make use of air, land, and

00:56 sea forces.

00:58 The planning for D-Day was a monumental undertaking.

01:03 It was June 6, 1944.

01:05 By air and by sea, they streamed towards the coast of Normandy.

01:09 There was quite a bit of anticipation for it, really.

01:11 You know, it was like, "Let's get this damn thing started and get it over with."

01:14 You know, one felt we were a pretty hefty force.

01:24 It was something that I will always remember.

01:26 The channel was full of boats coming towards Normandy beaches.

01:30 And the skipper said, "Look, boys, we're making history.
