Cameras installed at Preston's new bus gate on Corporation Street

Warning letters are on the way to hundreds of drivers after being caught on camera using Preston’s latest bus-only stretch of road on its first day in operation.

00:10new bus gate on Corporation Street which has just installed cameras which went live yesterday.

00:16Now these are meant to monitor the site 24-7 and only buses and bikes are allowed through.

00:24Now hundreds of cars have been pitched going through the gate and have been issued warnings.

00:31The gate is located between Heatley Street and Marsh Lane and speaking to a few people

00:40nearby, they've said the gate and the cameras, there's not enough signage about them, they're

00:49confused about the whole system and they think it's too late by the time they've already

00:55drove through it to be issuing them warnings. As you can see behind me, the bus gate is

01:02right there and cameras have been operational for just over a day now. And yeah, they've

01:08received quite a bit of criticism from local residents who don't really understand the system at all.

01:20Now the bus gate was brought in to reduce congestion in the Frigate and Ringway area as well as

01:29to promote more people to use public transport and increase bus reliability. Now Lancashire

01:35County Council have said they're not going to be issuing any fines, which are usually

01:39£70 initially, and instead will be sending out warning letters. But drivers have kind

01:48of expressed their frustrations and said the regulation just hasn't been told well

01:54enough to people going through the area and yeah, they're not sure the whole system works at the minute.
