00:02 Hello everyone, Neil Tappan here from Golf Monthly,
00:07 and welcome to this video,
00:08 in which we are looking at the seven ways
00:10 to play better golf without changing your swing.
00:14 This is all about how to practice
00:16 and how to think on the golf course
00:17 so that you have a smarter approach,
00:19 so that you don't have to go through the whole process
00:21 of rebuilding your swing
00:23 and making major technical changes.
00:25 The advice in this video comes from Alex Elliott.
00:27 He's our PGA Pro, and he offers some really simple
00:30 and effective ways for you to play better
00:32 without changing your swing.
00:34 Right, let's head out onto the golf course here at West Hill
00:36 and find out what number seven on the list is.
00:38 (electronic music)
00:41 Okay, so the first one on the list, Alex,
00:45 is no flag golf.
00:47 Now you may have noticed the 16th green behind us
00:49 here at West Hill, there's no flag on it.
00:50 There's no flag on it for a reason, Alex.
00:52 What's the thinking here?
00:53 - I think a lot of us, when we get down to kind of like
00:56 our seven, eight, nine, iron, or even six iron,
00:58 depending on the level of player,
00:59 we get that kind of green light in our head
01:02 where we go, right, we've got to go for that flag.
01:04 And it could bring in trouble, like say, for example,
01:06 on this hole here, if it was tight against the right,
01:09 then straight away we're bringing in those bunkers.
01:11 We're gonna have to miss it a little bit.
01:13 - Yeah, and you're also going slightly uphill,
01:15 and if you're leaking it a bit right,
01:16 it's gonna come up a little bit short as well.
01:17 So all of those things are gonna count against you.
01:19 - Exactly, and all I would say is,
01:20 if we could hit one more green around,
01:23 that's gonna have a massive effect on our handicap
01:25 over the season.
01:26 Have one more green around, strokes gain,
01:28 tells us we've got more chance of holding the putt.
01:30 So we look at the knock-on effect of this in confidence.
01:33 I just really believe that if you could go,
01:34 right, okay, I've got a green,
01:36 it's 15 yards either side of that flag,
01:38 and my virtual flag's now in the middle,
01:40 then our margin for error is so much bigger.
01:42 - This does take quite a lot of discipline, I'll warn you,
01:45 because there are times when you just can't help it,
01:48 can you, but if you do play towards the middle of the green,
01:50 and if you can hit the ball where you want to,
01:53 which is the other thing, isn't it,
01:54 but if you can do that,
01:55 then you're never gonna be left
01:56 with that long a putt, I guess.
01:57 - No, and it's amazing, a lot of the time,
01:59 and I've tried this with people, like in the lesson,
02:02 they actually, even if they hit a miss hit,
02:04 and they slightly leak it to the right,
02:05 and the flag's on the right,
02:06 they sometimes hit it closer.
02:07 So I think it's just measuring your expectations,
02:11 and measuring where your strengths and weaknesses are,
02:13 and realizing that, okay, well,
02:15 if I'm a slight fade of the golf ball,
02:16 slight draw of the golf ball,
02:17 even if I am at the middle,
02:19 I'm never gonna be too far away from the flag.
02:21 - Go on then, Alex.
02:22 I'll let you into a little trade secret here.
02:24 It's very early in the morning.
02:26 Alex hasn't warmed up, he hasn't hit a ball.
02:27 We're gonna put him under pressure,
02:28 and see how good he is from now on.
02:29 - No pressure now.
02:30 So one thing I would mention,
02:31 and you're gonna do this,
02:33 because we've taken the flag out here,
02:35 if there was a flag when you were playing,
02:36 I would pick out a target in the far ground,
02:39 and use that as kind of my focus point.
02:41 Otherwise, it just becomes a little bit too wide.
02:43 - Okay, so what are you looking at here?
02:44 - Well, there's a silver birch.
02:45 I think it's a silver birch.
02:46 - Yep, yeah, yeah, that is a silver birch.
02:48 - Straight through onto the middle of the green.
02:50 That is exactly what I'm trying to hold my targeting on.
02:53 So if the flag was either side of that,
02:54 I would focus on the tree.
02:55 - All right.
02:57 - That's gone straight at the silver.
03:04 I'll tell you what,
03:05 it's about three yards left of the silver birch.
03:07 Do you know what, Alex?
03:08 It's a tad long.
03:09 You've taken maybe half a club too much,
03:10 but from wherever that's finished,
03:12 it's not far away,
03:13 you haven't got much work to do
03:14 to make sure that you walk off with a par.
03:16 And if you can keep your score ticking over,
03:18 if you can keep making pars,
03:20 ultimately your handicap,
03:22 your scores are definitely going to improve.
03:24 Okay, Alex, so you found yourself in a spot of bother here.
03:32 And as I'm sure that most people watching this
03:33 will be thinking to themselves,
03:34 you're going to tell them to chip out.
03:36 But it's not quite as simple as that.
03:38 - No, I like to use the word smart golf.
03:41 So every time you've got a situation,
03:42 it could be from the fairway to a tight flag,
03:44 or predominantly like we have here,
03:47 I've got to fade it round, keep it low,
03:49 get it towards the green,
03:50 or I could chip it out.
03:52 Ask yourself the question,
03:53 how many times out of 10 could I pull this shot off
03:57 and keep me being able to advance towards the green?
03:59 I like to use the eight out of 10 rule.
04:02 - Yes.
04:02 - So anything less than eight out of 10,
04:04 I will take the smarter, safer option possibly.
04:07 If it's a question where you go,
04:09 yeah, I can pull that shot off,
04:10 then it's a risk worth taking.
04:12 - So let me ask you this question then, Alex.
04:14 What quantifies a successful outcome from here?
04:18 Being on the green, being around the green,
04:20 being in a bunker short of the green,
04:21 what would you say, I'll take that over a chip out?
04:24 - I think what I would say here is,
04:26 if I could advance this inside 100 yards,
04:29 then I've got a better opportunity
04:30 of getting this ball closer to the flag.
04:32 - Versus chipping it outside.
04:33 - I'll leave myself 200, 180 yards,
04:36 say I'm less likely to hit it closer to the green.
04:39 Whereas if I could get this out here on this par five,
04:41 inside 100 or around 100 yards,
04:44 no matter what level of player we are,
04:45 we'll probably feel a little bit more comfortable
04:47 with a wedge than we do, say a four iron or a three iron.
04:49 - Now see, eight out of 10 threshold,
04:52 to me, sounds quite high.
04:53 Yeah, I'd probably, yeah, I wouldn't describe myself
04:56 as naturally the most aggressive golfer,
04:58 but I'd probably be working to about five out of 10,
05:00 which I think illustrates the problem.
05:01 - Yeah, but I mean, I think it could be a sliding scale
05:05 depending on your level of player.
05:07 If you feel like you're less likely
05:09 to be more repeatable under pressure in this situation,
05:12 then possibly it might be like a six, five out of 10.
05:15 Or maybe it's saying, well, okay,
05:17 well maybe I need to take a little bit more
05:19 of potentially a risk.
05:20 'Cause we look at all the top guys on tour
05:22 and they are the elite of the elite,
05:24 but they take on some of the shots
05:26 that we wouldn't dream of.
05:27 And I know they're probably thinking,
05:28 because they can control their ball
05:30 a little bit better than us.
05:31 But I believe that we've got to be smart,
05:33 aggressive sometimes in our golf.
05:35 - Yes, okay, so that begs the question,
05:38 what out of 10 would you rank this shot?
05:40 - I've got to say eight, haven't I?
05:41 (laughing)
05:42 No, I would probably give this an eight out of 10,
05:44 just because I'm quite comfortable fading the golf ball.
05:48 I also carry a three iron,
05:49 which I know I can hit relatively low.
05:52 And it suits my eye.
05:53 If it was a hook around the tree,
05:55 then it probably wouldn't be a shot.
05:56 - It might be a different matter.
05:57 Even though this looks like a really difficult golf shot,
06:00 you're about an eight, so you would go for this
06:02 versus the chip out.
06:03 Well then that's, unfortunately,
06:05 you're gonna have to do it for us then, Alex.
06:07 - Okay.
06:07 - I feel a little bit in danger here, Alex,
06:11 I'm not gonna lie.
06:11 - Trust me.
06:12 (laughing)
06:15 - That's an absolutely amazing shot.
06:20 - That's probably gonna get about 20 yards short.
06:25 - Yeah, if it wasn't quite so wet,
06:26 that would be on the green.
06:28 I think it goes to show, you've got to know your game.
06:29 You've got to know, as Alex said,
06:30 what your strengths and weaknesses are.
06:32 If you're happier hitting a fade than a draw,
06:33 then there are gonna be certain circumstances
06:35 where you will be able to pull shots off
06:37 where otherwise you wouldn't.
06:38 So understand your own game, be realistic,
06:41 and then come up with a plan.
06:42 If it's eight out of 10, whether you go for it or not,
06:44 it might just make a big difference to your scores.
06:46 (upbeat music)
06:49 Okay, so the next one is a great way of practising.
06:54 If you're out on the golf course on your own,
06:56 a bit of performance practise
06:57 is really going to sharpen you up.
06:59 Alex, talk about a tip here.
07:00 - Deliberate miss.
07:02 It's gonna sound a bit contradictory of terms,
07:04 we don't wanna ever try and miss the green.
07:06 But this element of this game really kind of tunes you
07:09 into where is a good miss, your short game skills,
07:12 and also makes it a little bit more fun and interesting
07:15 over, say, three holes.
07:17 It's easy just to go out and mundanely hit shots
07:20 and not really take anything in.
07:21 - Okay, fine.
07:22 So in a situation like this,
07:23 you've got about 150 yards into the green,
07:25 you're looking to miss the green,
07:27 where are you looking to miss it?
07:28 - So for this flag here, where it'd be a nice simple chip,
07:31 if I could miss it front left,
07:32 I've then got a simple chip and run up.
07:34 So I'd get a point if I miss the green,
07:37 two more points if I then got it up and down from there,
07:41 and then minus two if I actually hit the green.
07:43 - Okay, fine.
07:44 - So over the three holes, say,
07:45 if you played it when you were on your own,
07:47 there's nine points available.
07:48 So you can measure your score out of nine.
07:50 I think if we could really go and say,
07:52 well, imagine I was now hitting it
07:54 towards this small bunker,
07:55 and that was my good miss on this hole.
07:57 You could use the same theory and say,
07:59 well, if I can hit it into a five-yard wide bunker,
08:02 I can hit it onto a 45 foot wide green.
08:06 So it's actually harder to do the deliberate miss.
08:08 - Cool, then, let's do it.
08:08 - Okay.
08:10 So I'm gonna go for short left here,
08:12 just on line with this big tree.
08:13 - Oh, get out.
08:24 Don't get on the green.
08:26 Oh!
08:27 - Just short.
08:28 - Just, just, just short.
08:30 You're in danger of losing two points there,
08:32 but you haven't.
08:33 So you're one point up.
08:34 Now, quick question for you.
08:36 Do you have to chip it, or can you pat it?
08:37 - Completely up to you.
08:39 Aim of the game now is just to get it up and down.
08:41 - Okay, fine.
08:42 And I guess the idea here is,
08:43 the more you get it up and down,
08:44 the more you're growing your confidence,
08:46 you're testing your short game skills.
08:47 It's good for a whole host of different reasons.
08:49 - Exactly, and there becomes less pressure
08:50 on hitting greens then.
08:52 So you're probably gonna hit more greens,
08:53 just because you feel a little bit more relaxed.
08:55 - More relaxed, okay, fine.
08:56 Let's see if you can--
08:57 - I would usually put this here,
08:59 but just for this bit of mud on the front of the green here,
09:01 I'm just gonna try and lift it over it.
09:03 - Yeah, and it's wet, it's a bit dewy, isn't it?
09:04 So, makes sense. - Rolling out
09:05 towards the hole.
09:07 - Hurry, hurry. - No.
09:15 - Yes, saved you two points.
09:23 - Saved me two points.
09:24 - There you go, so put this into play.
09:26 Whenever you get a chance to play golf on your own,
09:28 give this a go.
09:29 It will build your confidence from the fairway
09:31 and around the greens,
09:32 and it could make a big difference to your scoring.
09:34 - So Neil, we've got 177 into the last tier.
09:42 - Yes.
09:43 - What would be your usual approach to hitting a shot?
09:45 One that potentially you're not very comfortable with?
09:48 - Good question.
09:50 Well, I have learned over the years
09:51 that I'm better off having a very clear picture in my mind
09:55 for the sort of shots I'm trying to play.
09:57 So I would definitely be trying to work out
09:59 whether I wanted to hit a fade or a draw.
10:01 Now, I'm not the best golfer in the world,
10:02 but I can hit, you know, I can try and do that.
10:05 - So you're more away from a technical swing thought than-
10:09 - Yes, although I will have one swing thought.
10:11 - Okay, and that's important.
10:12 I think having one kind of gives you a feeling
10:13 of what you're trying to achieve.
10:15 What I want to get you into here is,
10:16 I think a lot of people have too much going on in their head.
10:19 - Yes.
10:20 - So potentially, some means sometimes people
10:22 have got five swing thoughts.
10:23 - Yes.
10:24 - And that's clutter.
10:25 - Yes, for sure.
10:26 - And that's clutter in your head.
10:27 So this is all about asking good questions.
10:30 What I want you to do is before every single shot,
10:32 whether that be a tee shot, chip shot,
10:34 iron shot we've got here, or even a putt,
10:36 ask yourself a question, what shot do I see?
10:39 - Fine.
10:40 - Even if you ask it in your head,
10:40 stand behind the golf ball,
10:42 I think straight away it's a lot easier
10:43 for you to paint that picture in your mind.
10:45 And if you're not someone that's very visual,
10:47 I always think of, you know, the shot tracer.
10:50 - Yes.
10:51 - The thing you see on TV.
10:52 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:52 - Almost trying to imagine one of those.
10:53 - Okay.
10:54 - And that's a really good way to go about this.
10:55 - Fine, and a question I've got for you then, Alex,
10:57 is you don't want to be negative
10:59 with any shot you want to hit.
11:01 We all understand how important it is to stay positive,
11:03 and yet, it's also really important to know
11:05 where you can't miss.
11:06 So how do you stay positive whilst also paying attention
11:08 to where you can't hit it?
11:09 - I think the thing you've got to realise
11:11 is all these top players, they will have negative thoughts.
11:14 I think it's just about how you deal with them.
11:17 And it's realising that if I have a negative thought,
11:19 don't let that become so much of an objective in your shot.
11:23 - Okay, fine.
11:24 - I think it'd be unrealistic for us to go,
11:25 right, okay, he'll never think negative,
11:28 even though we want to try and think as positive as we can.
11:30 I would really try and hone myself
11:32 on a really clear, detailed image.
11:34 So do you like to fade it, do you like to draw it?
11:36 I know we hit a few shots before.
11:37 Draw's probably your go-to shot.
11:39 - Preferred shot, yeah.
11:40 - So I'll be really detailed in the shot
11:42 that I see towards the green.
11:44 - Okay, fine.
11:44 And in a shot like this, where, you know,
11:48 it's one of my, I'll be honest,
11:50 one of my least favourite shots here at West Hill.
11:51 I always worry that I'm going to hit it into the clubhouse.
11:55 So should I be just sticking with my normal shot shape,
11:58 which would be a slight draw,
11:59 or should, for instance, it feels like naturally to me,
12:02 this favours a slight fade.
12:03 But would you suggest I should stick with the draw?
12:05 - You've answered the question there, haven't you?
12:07 You've said, what shot do I see?
12:09 This shot now favours a natural fade.
12:11 So that's where I would go,
12:12 well, the picture's telling you the story.
12:15 If it was really where,
12:16 when you're super, super not comfortable with it,
12:18 and it was potentially a little bit further away,
12:20 I would potentially revert to type, so your draw.
12:22 But where you've come out to me there,
12:24 and you said this shot prefers a fade,
12:26 you're telling yourself what you see.
12:27 - Okay, fine, good.
12:28 Okay, fine, so I'll try and hit a little fade in here then.
12:32 Trying to draw a very clear picture in my mind
12:34 for what to do.
12:34 See if I can do it.
12:36 - Beautiful shot.
12:46 - Start line was a bit off, I pushed it a bit,
12:48 but I faded it.
12:49 It's over the bunker, it's okay, isn't it?
12:52 I'll take it.
12:54 (upbeat music)
12:57 - Okay, so the next one on our list
13:00 relates to the way in which you build a strategy
13:03 for the holes that you're playing out on the golf course.
13:04 In particular, Alex, the difficult holes that you play.
13:08 And what's the thinking here?
13:10 - Ultimately, I think it's just highlighting
13:12 the way the course designer wanted you to play it,
13:14 rather than getting into your own routine.
13:16 I think we're all probably guilty of this.
13:18 We get to say the fifth, the sixth, the 16th,
13:21 oh, I always hit drive in here,
13:22 or I always hit three-wood here,
13:23 and we just get into a routine of doing that.
13:25 Bringing in trouble,
13:26 probably making the same mistakes every single time.
13:28 So if we take the 16th here at West Hills,
13:31 if we look at it back towards the tee,
13:33 and we said, right, okay,
13:34 if we wanted to hit to the middle of the green here,
13:36 well, we'd probably wanna be down the right-hand side,
13:38 as we look at it, so the left-hand side from the tee.
13:41 And it really opens up the green,
13:42 takes away the trouble on the right side,
13:44 which you can't see here, there's some bunkers there.
13:46 And for me, I really believe
13:48 that it doesn't highlight the trouble,
13:49 it really highlights the positions you want to put the ball in.
13:52 - And it's interesting you should say that,
13:53 because actually, it's the first time
13:54 I've really looked at this hole from this angle,
13:57 and certainly, the left-hand side, as you play it,
13:59 is a much better place to miss it as well,
14:01 because the trouble's not as severe on that left side.
14:04 You can get away with hitting a bit of a hook,
14:06 whereas if you leak it out to the right,
14:08 you're in a lot more trouble.
14:09 And it's the sort of thing
14:10 that you'll only really notice, I think,
14:12 when you look at the hole from the green
14:14 back towards the tee.
14:14 - Exactly, I think you don't look at it subjectively as well,
14:17 'cause if you're looking at it from the tee to the green,
14:19 you know you've got to then play a shot there,
14:21 and it might influence you that way,
14:23 whereas if you stood here now,
14:24 you know you've played the hole.
14:25 It could be in a practice round,
14:26 it could just be walking that hole.
14:28 And it just gives you that impression of,
14:30 right, okay, well, if I put it there,
14:31 put it here, and put it there,
14:32 I know golf's not as simple as that,
14:34 but I think if we can start to plan our rounds better,
14:37 we take the trouble out of play.
14:38 - So there you have it.
14:39 Think about it slightly differently.
14:40 Pick the three hardest holes,
14:42 the three holes on your local course
14:44 that you play the worst.
14:45 Think about them from the green back to the tee.
14:47 Maybe come up with a slightly different strategy.
14:50 You might just shoot those goals.
14:51 (upbeat music)
14:54 Right, Neil, I'm now your caddie.
14:57 - Yes. - Rolls reversed.
14:58 - Yes.
14:59 - We've got a flag here, we've got 120 yards.
15:01 It's quite tight on the right.
15:02 I want you to give me what color you think this flag is
15:05 on a traffic light system.
15:06 So red, amber, or green.
15:08 - Well, I would say it's a green light flag,
15:12 'cause it's 120 yards.
15:14 I'm a five handicapper,
15:15 so I definitely would be going for this, put it that way.
15:18 - Yeah, for me, because it's quite close to that bunker,
15:22 and because there's a little bit of danger there,
15:25 I would kind of classify this as an amber.
15:27 - Okay, fine.
15:28 - Just because I think it's one of those sucker pins
15:31 where you could potentially bring in a lot of danger.
15:34 I would think about flags and scenarios
15:37 and wind and conditions,
15:38 and that would give me an overall opinion
15:40 on what I would classify as what.
15:41 - Okay, so you're saying to me
15:43 that before you hit every shot into a green,
15:45 you're kind of having a simple traffic light system,
15:49 and green being absolutely go for it.
15:52 Amber being play away from it a bit, what's red?
15:54 - Red would be one where I would kind of
15:56 take just middle of the green.
15:57 So we sort of spoke about that on a previous tip,
15:59 where we would just say no flag golf,
16:01 and that would be where,
16:02 if I miss that green at all costs,
16:04 then it was gonna be bogey.
16:06 Say, for example, water, island green, bunker, short-sided,
16:10 that would be where it would be a red flag.
16:11 But that could also be on the situation as well.
16:14 Like say this was howling into the wind,
16:17 this then may change, or downwind, vice versa,
16:19 it may change more towards a green.
16:21 So it all depends on the situation,
16:23 and that's why I want you to think of it
16:24 as like a fluid system,
16:26 depending on the day, depending on the weather.
16:28 But having a category of flags
16:30 definitely allows you to have a bit more of a game plan.
16:31 - So where shall I aim?
16:33 (laughing)
16:34 - So what I would do here,
16:35 'cause I think from a caddy's point of view,
16:37 I'd be saying, right, okay,
16:39 five handicap, it's 120 yards,
16:40 into a little bit of wind, but it's a tight flag.
16:43 I'll be saying this is an amber flag,
16:44 so if we could aim roughly five, 10 yards left of it,
16:47 see the fence in the background,
16:49 that'd be where I'd concentrate my aim.
16:51 Because if we could still get pin high,
16:53 we're still gonna have a chance of a birdie.
16:54 - A birdie.
16:55 Right, I'm gonna take one more club.
16:56 - Okay.
16:57 - 'Cause it's, as you say,
16:58 it is getting into the wind a bit,
16:59 and I will do my best, I will do my best
17:02 to aim away from the flag.
17:03 Even though my natural instinct
17:06 is to be aggressive from here,
17:07 I'll aim a little bit left of it.
17:09 (upbeat music)
17:11 Well, I pulled it a bit.
17:18 It's very safe.
17:19 But it's on the green.
17:23 (upbeat music)
17:26 Okay, so number one on our list
17:29 is something that every single golfer,
17:31 no matter what your ability, can do.
17:34 Alex, what is it?
17:35 - Consistent alignment routine from the tee.
17:37 I think it's just worth noting
17:39 that I think people get into bad habits with alignment.
17:42 I think notoriously people will aim
17:44 a little bit to the right,
17:46 swing a little bit left,
17:47 and it can really bring in bad swing habits.
17:51 And bad swing habits can lead
17:52 to bad shots out on the golf course.
17:53 So I kind of think of it as like a three-stage process
17:57 that is really simple to follow.
17:59 Neil, I put this alignment stick down the ground here.
18:02 This is gonna be our ball-to-target line.
18:04 So if we look directly down this,
18:06 this is just pointing just right
18:08 at that second bunker on the left.
18:09 - Yeah.
18:11 - So for me there, I've got my ball-to-target line,
18:13 and I would go trace that from the target
18:15 to an intermediate target.
18:17 So we've got an alignment stick down here,
18:19 but I appreciate if you're playing your competition
18:20 on a Saturday or a Sunday, this can't be down.
18:23 I would just pick out a divot, a leaf,
18:25 and an impression on the ground
18:27 that will form your intermediate target
18:29 between the bunker we've got here and the ground.
18:32 I always then place my club down,
18:34 try and make like a right angle with my driver
18:36 between the crown and that imaginary line,
18:39 and then try and build my stance around that.
18:42 So point number two, I would really try and feel
18:45 that I've got parallel lines with my feet.
18:47 - Yeah, like you'll stood on a train tracks or something.
18:49 - Exactly that.
18:50 And people may argue slight for draw, slight for fade,
18:52 but I really believe if you can get consistently aiming
18:55 towards a certain target,
18:57 it's gonna make you feel a little bit more comfortable,
18:59 a little bit more of a better routine.
19:01 And I think any routine in your golf swing,
19:03 especially like on the first tee,
19:05 coming down the last with a good score,
19:06 it's a good place to be.
19:07 - Yeah, it's definitely gonna help you handle pressure
19:08 that little bit better.
19:09 - Exactly.
19:10 - So go on then, Alex, just run through the process.
19:12 Don't necessarily need to sort of slow it down.
19:15 Just talk us through kind of exactly what you're doing
19:17 and then hit one for us.
19:18 - Tracing my ball to target line,
19:19 picking my intermediate target out,
19:22 club down, feet parallel, waggle the shoulders,
19:27 one look towards the target, and pull the trigger.
19:32 And you flush one straight down the middle.
19:35 Very good.
19:36 Now, how many of you out there do what Alex has just done?
19:39 Take the time just to make sure that you're focused
19:41 on getting the right alignment.
19:43 If you don't, be sure to put that into your game this year.
19:46 It might just make a big difference.
19:48 - There you have it.
