Peter Benoit (17 août 1834 – 8 mars 1901) était un compositeur et professeur de musique belge. Né à Harelbeke, en Flandre, il est connu pour son engagement en faveur de la flamandisation de l’enseignement musical et est devenu le premier directeur du Conservatoire royal flamand de musique d’Anvers.
En 1857, Benoit a remporté le premier prix au célèbre concours du Prix de Rome pour sa cantate Le Meurtre d’Abel. Il a ensuite tourné en Allemagne en 1858, visitant Cologne, Bonn, Leipzig, Dresde, Berlin et Munich. En 1862, il s’installe à Paris, où il devient chef d’orchestre au Théâtre des Bouffes Parisiens dirigé par Jacques Offenbach. Un an plus tard, il démissionne et s’installe à Sint-Joost-ten-Node, près de Bruxelles.

Peter Benoit (17 August 1834 – 8 March 1901) was a Flemish composer of Belgian nationality. Born in Harelbeke, Flanders, Belgium, he is known for his dedication to the Flemishization of music education and became the first director of the Royal Flemish Muziekconservatorium of Antwerp.
In 1857, Benoit won the first prize in the renowned Prix de Rome competition for his cantata Le Meurtre d’Abel (The Murder of Abel). He then toured Germany in 1858, visiting Cologne, Bonn, Leipzig, Dresden, Berlin, and Munich. In 1862, he moved to Paris, where he became the conductor of the Théâtre des Bouffes Parisiens led by Jacques Offenbach. A year later, he resigned and settled in Sint-Joost-ten-Node, near Brussels.
