00:00 Namaste, we are team Shunir from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, presenting to you Samsara,
00:07 meaning rebirth, a multi-family building retrofit that aims to enhance occupant health and safety
00:13 within slum rehabilitation building or SRH buildings in Mumbai, India.
00:19 Lack of affordable housing has pushed the lower income groups to slums.
00:22 As a response, the state has been redeveloping these slums into SRH buildings.
00:28 After visiting several SRH projects, we selected this particular project since we found it
00:33 to be in the most critical state.
00:35 Nine years ago, the construction started with these three buildings where all of them were
00:40 supposed to be constructed up to 15 storeys.
00:42 However, it has only been constructed up to 10 storeys, meaning that the three existing
00:47 buildings lie structurally over-designed.
00:49 Moreover, an upcoming elevated freeway is expected to further degrade the livability
00:54 of the lower three storeys.
00:56 Today, these three buildings stand with 90 apartments, each of which is having 225 square
01:02 feet of habitable area.
01:05 Community interactions revealed several concerns faced by the occupants, starting with small
01:09 and crowded apartments, lack of communal spaces, as well as reported poor ventilation, inadequate
01:16 daylight and lack of thermal comfort amongst all residents.
01:20 News and research articles report inadequate health and safety standards within these SRH
01:26 buildings.
01:27 Concerns such as tuberculosis, asthma, growth restrictions are alarmingly prevalent.
01:32 There have also been instances of death due to absence of fire escape.
01:38 Our findings shape our design goals, which prioritize occupant health and safety while
01:43 enabling community empowerment and sustainable development.
01:46 All goals are further detailed in quantitative and qualitative aspects.
