00:04Dumb-dumb, deedle-dumb-dumb, deedle-dumb-dumb, deedle-dumb-dumb.
00:09There was a turtle by the name of Bert, and Bert the turtle was very alert.
00:16When danger threatened him, he never got hurt. He knew just what to do.
00:22He ducked and covered, ducked and covered.
00:28He did what we all must learn to do.
00:33You and you and you and you, duck and covered.
00:40Be sure and remember what Bert the turtle just did, friends, because every one of us must remember to do
00:46the same thing.
00:47That's what this film is all about, Duck and Cover.
00:51This is an official civil defense film produced in cooperation with the Federal Civil Defense Administration
00:56and in consultation with the Safety Commission of the National Education Association.
01:02Produced by Archer Productions, Incorporated.
01:05Hey, Bert, come on out and meet all these nice people, please.
01:10All right. We really can't blame you.
01:13You see, Bert is a very, very careful fellow.
01:16When there's danger, this is the way he keeps from being hurt.
01:21Sometimes it even saves his life.
01:24That's why these children are practicing to duck and cover just as you do in your school.
01:30We all know the atomic bomb is very dangerous.
01:33Since it may be used against us, we must get ready for it,
01:37just as we are ready for many other dangers that are around us all the time.
01:41Fire is a danger.
01:43It can burn whole buildings if someone is careless.
01:46But we are ready for fires.
01:48We have a fine fire department to put out the fire.
01:52And you have fire drills in your school so you know what to do.
01:56Automobiles can be dangerous, too.
01:58They sometimes cause bad accidents.
02:01But we are ready.
02:02We have safety rules that car drivers and people who are walking must obey.
02:06Now, we must be ready for a new danger, the atomic bomb.
02:11First, you have to know what happens when an atomic bomb explodes.
02:16You will know when it comes.
02:17We hope it never comes, but we must get ready.
02:20It looks something like this.
02:22There is a bright flash, brighter than the sun, brighter than anything you've ever seen.
02:27If you were not ready and did not know what to do, it could hurt you in different ways.
02:33It could knock you down hard or throw you against a tree or a wall.
02:37It is such a big explosion, it can smash in buildings and knock sign boards over and break windows all
02:43over town.
02:44But if you duck and cover like Bert, you will be much safer.
02:50You know how bad sunburn can feel.
02:52The atomic bomb flash could burn you worse than a terrible sunburn, especially where you're not covered.
02:59Now, you and I don't have shells to crawl into like Bert the turtle, so we have to cover up
03:04in our own way.
03:06First, you duck.
03:07And then, you cover.
03:09And very tightly, you cover the back of your neck and your face.
03:14Duck can cover underneath a table or desk or anything else close by.
03:19In Betty's school, they are talking about the atomic bomb, too.
03:23Betty is asking her teacher, how can we tell when the atomic bomb may explode?
03:29And her teacher is explaining that there are two kinds of attack, with warning and without any warning.
03:35We think that most of the time, we will be warned before the bomb explodes.
03:39So, there will be time for us to get into our homes, schools, or some other safe place.
03:45Our civil defense workers and our men in uniform will do everything they can to warn us before enemy planes
03:52can bring a bomb near us.
03:54You may be in your schoolyard playing when the signal comes.
04:01That signal means to stop whatever you are doing and get to the nearest safe place fast.
04:07Always remember, a flash of an atomic bomb can come at any time, no matter where you may be.
04:14You might be out playing at home when the warning comes.
04:20Then, be sure to get into the house fast, where your parents have fixed a safe place for you to
04:25go.
04:27If you are not close to home when you hear the warning, go to the nearest safe cover.
04:32Know where you are to go, or ask an older person to help you.
04:37You know the places marked with the S sign?
04:39There are safe places to go when you hear the alarm.
04:43If there is a warning, you will hear it before the bomb explodes.
04:47But sometimes, and this is very, very important, sometimes the bomb might explode without any warning.
04:57Then, the first thing we would know about it would be the flash.
05:00And that means duck and cover fast, wherever you are.
05:03There's no time to look around or wait.
05:05Be like Bert.
05:06When there is a flash, duck and cover, and do it fast.
05:11Here are some older boys, showing what to do if the flash comes when you are not in the classroom.
05:16This is what to do if you should be in a corridor.
05:20You duck and cover tight against the wall this way.
05:24Remember to keep your face in the back of your neck, covered tightly.
05:28Try to fall away from windows or doors with glass in them.
05:32Then, if the glass breaks and flies through the air, it won't cut you.
05:36You might be eating your lunch when the flash comes.
05:39Duck and cover under the table.
05:41Then, if the explosion makes anything in the room fall down, it can't fall on you.
05:47Getting ready means we will all have to be able to take care of ourselves.
05:52The bomb might explode when there are no grown-ups near.
05:55Paul and Patty know this.
05:57And they are always ready to take care of themselves.
06:00Here they are on their way to school on a beautiful spring day.
06:04But no matter where they go or what they do, they always try to remember what to do if the
06:09atom bomb explodes right then.
06:12It's a bomb.
06:13Duck and cover.
06:15Paul and Patty know what to do.
06:17Paul covered the back of his head so that he wouldn't be burned.
06:20And Patty covered herself with the coat she was carrying.
06:24They knew how to duck and cover.
06:26They acted right away when the flash came.
06:29If they had been at this doorway when the bomb flashed, Paul and Patty would have ducked and covered this
06:34way, like this girl.
06:36Heavy doorways are a good place to duck and cover.
06:39She will be safer, too.
06:42Here's Tony going to his Cub Scout meeting.
06:45Tony knows the bomb can explode any time of the year, day or night.
06:49He is ready for it.
06:50Duck and cover.
06:52Atta boy, Tony.
06:54That flash means act fast.
06:56Tony knows that it helps to get to any kind of cover.
06:59This wall was close by, so that's where he ducked and covered.
07:03Tony knew what to do.
07:05Notice how he keeps from moving or from getting up and running.
07:08He stays down until he is sure the danger is over.
07:12The man helping Tony is a civil defense worker.
07:16His job is to help protect us when there is danger of the atomic bomb.
07:20We must obey the civil defense worker.
07:24We must know how to duck and cover in the school bus or in any other bus or street car.
07:30Duck and cover.
07:32Don't wait.
07:33Duck away from the windows fast.
07:35The glass may break and fly through the air and cut you.
07:39Sundays, holidays, vacation time.
07:42We must be ready every day, all the time, to do the right thing if the atomic bomb explodes.
07:50Duck and cover.
07:52This family knows what to do, just as your own family should.
07:56They know that even a thin cloth helps protect them.
07:59Even a newspaper can save you from a bad burn.
08:02But the most important thing of all is to duck and cover yourself,
08:06especially where your clothes do not cover you.
08:09No matter where we live, in the city or the country,
08:12we must be ready all the time for the atomic bomb.
08:17Duck and cover.
08:18That's the first thing to do.
08:20Duck and cover.
08:21The next important thing to do after that is to stay covered until the danger is over.
08:28Yes, we must all get ready now so we know how to save ourselves if the atomic bomb ever explodes
08:34near us.
08:35If you do not know just what to do, ask your teacher when this film is over.
08:41Discuss what you could do in different places if a bomb explodes.
08:45Older people will help us as they always do,
08:47but there might not be any grown-ups around when the bomb explodes.
08:50Then, you're on your own.
08:53Remember what to do, friends.
08:55Now tell me right out loud.
08:57What are you supposed to do when you see the flash?
09:00Duck and cover.
