Eighty people took part in a demonstration march on Poyll Dooey fields in Ramsey to protest against plans for a large housing development.
The proposed £40m Sulby Riverside scheme was rejected by the planning committee in February but developers Blythe Church Investments Holdings have appealed.

00:00 So we're all here protesting about the future development of Bill Dooley and the question
00:09 I've asked is where's Alf Cameron?
00:11 Why isn't he representing two and a half thousand people who signed a petition to stop this
00:16 development?
00:17 Can you tell me why you came along today?
00:20 I just think this is a duel in the middle of Ramsey.
00:24 I think it's beautiful, it's so biodiverse and once it's lost there's been nothing to
00:29 replace it.
00:30 It's just the absolute travesty of anything that's built in this area.
00:34 There's just so much here, trees, mosaic in the fields of all the species.
00:40 I think it's wonderful.
00:42 They should be very proud to have this duel in Ramsey.
00:45 You know the fields are just getting quiet in there, it's like not really even affordable
00:50 for most people.
00:51 I don't think and you know they're just getting rented out for high rents and yeah it's just
00:56 not good.
00:57 I feel really passionate about the place.
00:59 When I first came here in 1988, I came down here and there was nothing behind.
01:04 It was just this brilliant place with just recreation, the dog walking just to chill
01:09 out and relax after a hard day's work.
01:12 It was just a special place and I just don't want to see it lost.
01:17 And it's a floodplain, well, a floodplain over there.
01:20 See all the special species that are around here.
01:24 No, we don't need it.
01:25 Because I feel so strongly that this needs to remain as it is.
01:30 And that we shouldn't be destroying what green open spaces we've got.
01:35 Because I feel very strongly about this sort of thing.
01:37 When it's gone, it's gone.
01:39 And the habitat, I mean if we can't cut hedges now between marshes etc, when were they supposed
01:45 to do this?
01:46 You know with the nesting birds and stuff.
01:48 What about the sewage?
01:49 I've got clients that live on the other side of the river that are worried about the water
01:54 that's channelled from this.
01:55 Is it going the other side?
01:57 Are they going to be flooded?
01:58 This isn't flooded.
01:59 There's lots and lots of crustals, lots of habitats, hedges, plants, flowers.
02:08 It's wrong.
02:09 It's happened in England so much.
02:11 And apathy will rule the day.
02:14 Kill it.
02:15 And money.
02:16 And money.
02:17 Guys, that's enough chanting!
02:19 Hey! Ho! Ho!
02:21 Keep your hands up and let it go!
02:23 [GIGGLES]
02:25 I must admit, I think it's ludicrous.
02:27 This is a floodplain.
02:29 I've lived here for 15 years
02:31 and I've walked on this area
02:33 frequently through all weathers
02:35 and the flooding around here can be
02:37 quite substantial
02:39 and the fact they want to build all over it more concrete
02:41 I mean, the water can't go
02:43 it can't soak in anywhere
02:45 it can just flow to the river
02:47 they don't dredge it, they've never dredged anywhere
02:49 in the rivers or put things in
02:51 so where's the water going to go?
02:53 We are on ground zero here
02:55 so the water is just going to keep building up
02:57 and flood straight on into all the estates
02:59 and way on into town, which has already happened
03:01 more than once
03:03 in my lifetime here
03:05 and to do this is just going to expatiate the problem
03:07 so I think it's a very, very bad idea.
03:09 Fat population here
03:11 and if they're going to be putting any trees down
03:13 we walk here late at night sometimes
03:15 and we see bats all over the place
03:17 we've noticed there's new bat boxes
03:19 surely they are protected in this area
03:21 I think it's a rubbish idea
03:23 because all of the pubs in Ramsey
03:25 are not in great use
03:27 and we don't have as many people
03:29 in the Isle of Man
03:31 so we don't need so many houses
03:33 Paltway's an amazing resource
03:35 there's nowhere else on the Isle of Man
03:37 that's not a place
03:39 that's got a lot of people
03:41 it's a great resource, there's nowhere else on the Isle of Man
03:43 not a town that has somewhere like this
03:45 Douglas, not much
03:47 look at this, so close to the town
03:49 you want to dig it up?
03:51 really? I mean, the biodiversity here
03:53 amazing
03:55 so close to town, close walking distance
03:57 why rip it up? It's crazy
03:59 we think we know why it might get ripped up
04:01 money talks
04:03 hey ho, save Paltway
04:05 save it for everybody, bring it on
