Shrewsbury Hospital parking problems.

Parking issues for both staff and patients and visitors has been spilling over the road onto the estate opposite, where some residents have taken to putting out cones to deter others. We meet a resident for a chat about life opposite the hospital.

00:00 How you doing sir? So you live on the estate just opposite Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

00:04 It gets quite busy on the car park there and I understand they tend to filter

00:09 through onto the estate over the road here? Yes, they do. It happens just all the time.

00:16 It's often not a problem but sometimes it is. When there's cars parked on both sides of the street

00:23 that can cause problems with bin men trying to reverse the car around the junction.

00:29 So we've got people that run businesses that need vans on the street as well.

00:33 It makes it difficult for them to just get to their house.

00:37 So that's an issue. We have tried putting cones out but they're often ignored.

00:51 It's clearly been run over and I think it's been run over a few times.

00:54 But I think people drive up to it and then because it's quite small they get back in the car.

01:01 I'm assuming here. They get back in and then when they drive off they've forgotten it's there

01:06 and they drive over it. So I don't think it's just a malicious act of like, you know,

01:11 not interested in what you guys want.

01:15 So what would you like to see? I know New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton,

01:19 they've kind of extended their car parking by building a multi-storey.

01:23 Obviously there's a cost incurred but then there's a revenue to be made from it or residence permits.

01:28 Have you pondered the thought as to what you'd... a better way of working the system?

01:34 I think ultimately the hospital needs multi-storey parking or some kind of off-site parking or something.

01:40 I think we don't really have capacity on this estate because there's really only room for one car per household.

01:49 Anyone having more than one car has to park on the road and then they're competing with everyone else.

01:54 So I don't think we've really got the capacity to do anything meaningful.

01:58 But I think the hospital with its expansion, the amount of people working there,

02:04 the amount of patients and visitors, they need more capacity one way or another.

02:09 Realistically they need to invest in multi-storey parking. This is my opinion.
