Archimedes discovered the formula for calculating the area of a circle by dividing the shape into extremely small pieces. This concept was at the heart of some of his greatest mathematical achievements, but it relied on a paradox that remained unresolved for thousands of years. Even when Isaac Newton revisited this paradox 1800 years later, he still left some crucial questions unanswered.
