01:14 I mean, you've got to see this movie to believe it.

01:17 I mean, when I asked Rathna Pathak,

01:20 she said it, you people had a ball.

01:23 And it's showing in the movie.

01:25 That's really nice.

01:27 Bollywood Hollywood is a musical romantic comedy.

01:31 It's set in Toronto, Canada.

01:33 It's about my character, Rahul Seth.

01:37 I play a young NRI millionaire who is--

01:40 his father is dead.

01:41 So he's the head of the family.

01:43 And he has this really overdramatic mother

01:46 played by Moushami Chatterjee and this grandmother.

01:48 And both of them are quite traditional.

01:50 And they are sick of his girlfriends and all that.

01:55 So they want him to settle down.

01:57 And his sister's wedding is coming up.

01:58 So his mother tells him, either you

02:00 find yourself a nice Indian girl and settle down,

02:02 or else I'm going to call off your sister's wedding.

02:04 So he's suddenly put in a really awkward position.

02:07 So he runs out.

02:08 And he hires this girl played by Lisa Ray

02:12 to act as his fiance for a week.

02:14 He says, act as my fiance for a week, make the family happy.

02:17 And then after my sister's wedding,

02:18 we'll just go our separate ways.

02:20 But things don't really go according to plan.

02:22 And they end up falling in love with each other.

02:27 Primarily for me on a personal level,

02:33 it's been a wonderful experience.

02:35 I think I've evolved as a performer.

02:37 I got the opportunity to work with a fantastic director,

02:40 fantastic cast and crew.

02:43 Also on another level, of course, it's a great, fun film.

02:47 And I think a really interesting comedy.

02:51 And beyond that as well, it's a very interesting fusion

02:54 of East and West.

02:54 So I think it's really got a lot of things going for it.

02:57 I'm playing a fairly schizophrenic character,

02:59 actually.

03:00 It's almost like two characters rolled into one.

03:02 There's so many different elements.

03:06 I think the thing about the film is it really is working

03:08 on many different levels.

03:09 But superficially, let's say it's

03:11 almost like a pretty woman meets--

03:15 let me see-- pretty woman meets [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]

03:21 Something like that.

03:22 [MUSIC PLAYING]

03:25 The film is a big party.

03:34 The mood is all peppy.

03:35 And it's got very danceable songs.

03:39 It's a very colorful film with a lot of Indian sentiments

03:42 and sensibilities.

03:43 So like I said, there's a Sangeet song.

03:45 There's a Holi song.

03:47 There's a ballad.

03:49 There's a rendition of [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]

03:52 which is very jazzed up, basically.

03:55 There's an English song.

03:58 A lot of voices being used.

03:59 So all in all, it's a very enjoyable affair.

04:01 And we've used the songs like background pieces,

04:04 apart from using two or three full songs.

04:06 So never at any point you'd be bored of a song.

04:11 Just before it gets to you, it's over.

04:14 Like a foreign original soundtrack.

04:16 The music is by Sangeet Chautha.

04:18 And I think he's done a stupendous job with it.

04:20 He's really taken the essence of the film.

04:22 He's taken the fun of the film.

04:23 He's taken the romance of the film.

04:25 And he's put it into the music.

04:29 And he also has offered quite a wide range in his music.

04:31 There's a couple of ballads.

04:33 There are some really energetic numbers.

04:35 There's one of my favorites is a remix of Chin Chin Chu.

04:39 You remember that old song?

04:40 He's remixed it and done a great new version of it.

04:43 And there's also a bhajan on it.

04:45 So I think there's something for everyone.

04:47 Sangeet Chautha has done a fantastic job with the music,

04:50 if I do say so myself.

04:53 I think the proof is in the pudding.

04:54 I mean, the fact is that after the film was released

04:56 in Canada, we had a great mainstream response.

05:00 And there would be many sort of white Canadians

05:04 who would come out of the theater

05:05 sort of humming the music and asking, where can we buy this?

05:08 So I think that's a great compliment to Sangeet.

05:14 I feel deep-eyed audacity to ask me to do English films.

05:22 And I also got a braveness to accept that.

05:26 And if you ask me for language, I

05:29 have a problem with Hindi also.

05:31 And now my Bengali is bad because I

05:33 try to speak all the language.

05:35 As far as I understand, language means

05:37 you've got to reach to people.

05:39 I think I do that very well.

05:41 This was Deena Pathak's last film.

05:43 She passed away about a couple of months ago.

05:46 So it was a real honor to work with her.

05:48 And I really enjoyed working with her very, very much.

05:50 She's a fantastic actress.

05:52 Moushimi Chatterjee as well.

05:53 She's played my father's romantic interest.

05:56 She's played my brother's mother.

05:58 So she's almost like screen family.

06:01 And she's very funny in the film.

06:03 She's done a really fantastic job.

06:05 Both Moushimi Chatterjee and Deena Pathak

06:08 have been nominated for the Canadian Oscars.

06:11 So they've really done well.

06:14 Also the rest of the cast--

06:15 Gulbhushan Karbanda, Ranjit Choudhury, Lisa Ray-- fantastic.

06:19 All of them were really good.

06:21 It's a totally international crew.

06:24 And this was the first time they were working on a Bollywood

06:27 style film.

06:28 So it was fun working with them and sort

06:30 of seeing their reactions to the songs and dances and all that.

06:33 It's a great film.

06:33 I think the film being such a riot

06:36 is really helping the music.

06:38 I mean, you don't say, oh, God, here comes another song.

06:42 It's just been aptly placed.

06:44 I've used the music.

06:48 I've not really had to do too much with the background score,

06:50 because I've really used a lot of the songs.

06:53 And it's a nice feeling to use the songs in a background score.

06:55 Half the time when I've been scoring,

06:56 I've been just doing a parallel soundtrack

06:58 and not using my songs.

07:00 Because I think it's probably only must and now probably dumb

07:04 where I had a chance to use my songs as background elements.

07:08 But Deepa Mehta's film definitely

07:10 has given me the scope to do that.
