Bilang ng mga Pilipinong nagpakasal at nagkaanak noong pandemya, bumaba ayon sa CPD

00:00 Instead of increasing, the number of Filipinos who gave birth during the COVID-19 pandemic is decreasing,
00:05 according to a study.
00:07 Let's find out why in the story of Rod Lagusan.
00:10 In a study conducted by the Commission on Population and Development,
00:16 it is found that the behavior or view of Filipinos
00:20 regarding the marriage and birth of children during the COVID-19 pandemic is changing.
00:25 The CPD is expecting that the number of people who will give birth during this time will increase,
00:30 especially those who are at home due to the restrictions.
00:33 But the opposite happened.
00:34 Based on the data of the Philippine Statistics Authority,
00:37 the number of people who gave birth during 2020 decreased to more than 1.5 million.
00:41 It even decreased to more than 1.3 million in 2021
00:45 and again increased to 1.4 million by 2022.
00:49 According to our research,
00:51 it's surprising that the pandemic was not top of mind.
00:54 For the people of the Philippines,
00:57 actually, their concern was more economic at that time.
01:01 The first concern was economic,
01:05 the lack of employment,
01:07 opportunities, and then economic shock that the pandemic has brought during that time.
01:14 It may have affected the more focused campaign on family planning during the pandemic.
01:19 The most popular here is the use of pills, injectables, and implants.
01:23 Based on the data from the PSA, the number of people who will get married will also decrease.
01:27 After the pandemic, the number suddenly increased.
01:29 But what we can see from the data is that the trend is really live-in arrangements.
01:35 And these are young people, those below age 30, who are living together.
01:40 The changing values, actually, our study, the one that I was mentioning about,
01:46 the Filipino couples also prefer pets, the younger ones, than having a child.
01:51 According to the CPD, the average total fertility rate of the country is currently 1.9.
01:56 It means that usually, only one child is born.
01:59 Here in Metro Manila, it's lower than the national average, which is only 1.2.
02:03 The CPD explains that it's possible for the place to be urbanized,
02:07 where there are more opportunities and couples usually work.
02:11 That's why only one child is preferred.
02:13 The reason for the growth rate here in Metro Manila is the migration or the increase of people here
02:19 for the opportunity and not because of the people they're giving birth to.
02:22 At the same time, according to Kiray, this opportunity increased in the working age,
02:26 age 15 to 64, in our population to support the dependent population,
02:32 or the younger and older ones.
02:34 At the moment, 5% of the population is older or over 65 years old,
02:40 compared to the standard that the United Nations has of 7%
02:44 to consider as the aging population.
02:46 In the end, the CPD still recommends modern family planning.
02:50 The importance of planning when, where, and how many you want to have children
02:56 so that you can meet your aspirations as a family.
03:00 So, family planning still works.
03:02 Especially, the country's target is the more working population
03:06 that can help the country's economy.
03:09 Rod Laguzad, for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
