00:39 Very wonderful.
00:40 This is a journey of 44 years of service.
00:43 And there is no doubt that since childhood,
00:46 whenever we think of a brand or an organization of human service,
00:51 Hands is one of the first names.
00:53 We see different services and results in different departments in life.
00:59 Please welcome the CEO of Hands, Dr. Sheikh Tanveer Ahmed.
01:03 Thank you so much.
01:04 Thank you very much.
01:06 Please tell us about the existence of Hands.
01:11 What was the thought behind it?
01:13 What were the motivations?
01:15 What were the events at that time?
01:17 Please tell us in detail.
01:18 As the video of Hands was telling,
01:21 this journey of Hands is a journey of self-sufficiency.
01:24 Our vision was that we will not teach people to eat fish,
01:27 but to catch fish.
01:29 Under this, our founding chairman, Prof. Abdul Ghaffar Billu,
01:34 who was also our professor,
01:35 we were his junior doctors in the medical college,
01:38 we went on a journey with him to serve people outside the hospital.
01:44 Then it started from the Dehi area of Karachi.
01:47 And this journey is now, if I tell you about last year,
01:50 we have served Pakistan in 65 districts.
01:55 We have given direct benefits to 9.1 million people.
01:57 In health, education, livelihood, infrastructure, water sanitation,
02:01 through our 36 branches and with our 11,000 workforce.
02:05 This is 6 billion rupees,
02:08 we have been providing services for a year.
02:11 And from the Razmak of North Waziristan to Karachi,
02:17 our hospitals, our schools,
02:20 our livelihood programs,
02:22 which are interest-free loans,
02:24 and which have grants to generate self-employment.
02:27 Our health programs,
02:29 in which we call community health workers,
02:31 you have heard this story,
02:33 we are providing our services to 8,000 health workers in 18 districts of Punjab and Sindh.
02:39 And in the same way, in education,
02:41 in our school programs and in our literacy programs,
02:45 they are bringing changes in education.
02:47 We are also doing a lot of intervention in housing.
02:52 In Sailabh Zadgan,
02:54 6 districts of Sindh,
02:56 with the government of Sindh and the education department,
02:58 with the World Bank,
03:00 we are building houses worth around 4 lakhs.
03:03 And for extremely poor people,
03:05 whose houses have fallen.
03:07 There is no doubt about this,
03:09 because I have a lot of experience in recording my programs,
03:11 and I have a lot of experience in traveling all over Pakistan,
03:13 and in remote areas.
03:15 So I have felt the presence of hands in almost every place,
03:18 in different departments.
03:20 And we have personally witnessed this.
03:22 But Doctor, tell us,
03:24 if we talk about preferences,
03:26 what is the preference on the first number,
03:28 which is being focused more on the side of hands.
03:30 Of course, all the issues are very important.
03:32 But if we can categorize,
03:34 in which department is the hand doing the most work,
03:36 after that, if you can give two or three preferences.
03:39 As I said, our 6 service delivery areas,
03:42 in all of them,
03:45 in almost 6500 villages,
03:48 in villages,
03:50 we are working on building model villages.
03:53 I have already told you about the housing work.
03:55 We have built houses worth around 4 lakhs,
03:57 or we are going to build them.
03:59 So in that,
04:01 for health, we need a model of a health worker.
04:06 We need water and sewage services for you.
04:10 We need water,
04:12 we have a model of safe water,
04:14 we need that.
04:16 If there is no school,
04:18 then we need school facilities.
04:20 We have to build a good education system.
04:22 Similarly, for health,
04:24 we need a health worker,
04:26 or a health clinic.
04:28 So all these things,
04:30 and if their livelihood is full,
04:32 in flood-stricken areas,
04:34 or in other poor areas,
04:36 employment has become a big issue.
04:38 For that, we give grants.
04:40 We give grants to small shops,
04:42 small businesses,
04:44 so that they can learn to catch fish.
04:46 So that they can generate self-employment.
04:48 And apart from this,
04:50 we have a big revolving fund of 15 crores,
04:52 of interest-free loans,
04:54 in which small loans are given,
04:56 so that they can increase their business.
04:58 Please tell us,
05:00 because this is a great thing,
05:02 how are these loans given to people,
05:04 or what kind of business they do,
05:06 in which they are given loans?
05:08 Yes, first of all,
05:10 for poor people,
05:12 who have little experience,
05:14 they are given loans to run a business.
05:16 And when they reach their homes,
05:18 they are assessed.
05:20 They find out that the poor person is really poor,
05:22 because he is given a poverty score card,
05:24 and he is assessed for his poverty.
05:26 After that,
05:28 his business is identified,
05:30 which business he can do.
05:32 He is given skill training,
05:34 and a loan of up to 55,000 rupees,
05:36 in the agricultural or non-agricultural areas.
05:38 So, he buys a toolbox from this,
05:40 if he is a mechanic,
05:42 or if he wants to open a carpentry shop,
05:44 he opens that.
05:46 If he wants to open a grocery shop,
05:48 or if he wants to buy a cart,
05:50 or if he wants to buy a rickshaw,
05:52 then his problems are reduced,
05:54 and self-employment is generated.
05:56 So, this is a big thing,
05:58 that you are telling us that 6 billion rupees,
06:00 is the budget for a year,
06:02 and this is possible with the help of people,
06:04 and all the people are worthy of praise,
06:06 and we salute them,
06:08 who are supporting institutions like Hands.
06:10 So, this is a positive side,
06:12 there are challenges,
06:14 when you are working in so many departments,
06:16 and in a country where there are so many problems.
06:18 Yes, challenges,
06:20 the biggest challenge is,
06:22 the financial resources,
06:24 so, let me tell you,
06:26 that we have used Zakat,
06:28 as a mechanism,
06:30 and according to Sharia Compliance,
06:32 we have made such an institution,
06:34 that for the last 6 years,
06:36 we have been working on Sharia Compliance,
06:38 and we have documented it,
06:40 and for this, the first condition is,
06:42 that a Sharia Compliance company,
06:44 in which the Security Exchange Commission of Pakistan,
06:46 is registered with the SECP,
06:48 you should deploy them in your institution,
06:50 as an audit firm,
06:52 one is the financial audit,
06:54 which is done by financial firms,
06:56 and the other is Sharia Compliance,
06:58 and we hired them 5 years ago,
07:00 Mufti Wasif Hasee,
07:02 he is one of the directors,
07:04 and Sharia Company,
07:06 has made a mechanism,
07:08 that how Zakat can be used,
07:10 and how Zakat can reach the Mustahekeen,
07:12 so, I appeal to all of you,
07:14 that,
07:16 the institution,
07:18 which does not have an audit of Sharia Compliance,
07:20 should not be given Zakat,
07:22 because Zakat will not be used properly,
07:24 and if Zakat will not reach the right Mustahekeen,
07:26 then it is not accepted by Allah,
07:28 and it is not approved,
07:30 and that is the problem.
07:32 - This is your reason,
07:34 but I am sure,
07:36 all the capable people,
07:38 who have been given the authority,
07:40 that they can give in the way of Allah,
07:42 I am sure,
07:44 that they will be explored,
07:46 with the help of a project,
07:48 because MashaAllah,
07:50 in every department,
07:52 and especially in the remote areas,
07:54 there are boards,
07:56 I am sure,
07:58 you know,
08:00 how much hands on ground,
08:02 and how many departments,
08:04 are working,
08:06 and we would like to know,
08:08 personally,
08:10 if you can tell us some experiences,
08:12 some story,
08:14 which has motivated you,
08:16 or touched your heart,
08:18 so that people can understand,
08:20 how important it is,
08:22 to help the families,
08:24 and people, who are watching us,
08:26 - Yes, yes,
08:28 there are thousands of stories,
08:30 and stories of many areas,
08:32 if we talk about the area of Karachi,
08:34 where I was born,
08:36 this is the area of Malir,
08:38 where we are still the head office,
08:40 there,
08:42 schools were closed,
08:44 in 1982-83,
08:46 all the government schools were closed,
08:48 we have made this system,
08:50 where teachers were not available,
08:52 especially women teachers,
08:54 we have made a system of transportation,
08:56 that teachers from Karachi,
08:58 come and teach there,
09:00 so there, 25-30 primary,
09:02 and secondary schools,
09:04 especially for girls,
09:06 - just pick and drop,
09:08 - yes, that became functional,
09:10 today, after 30 years,
09:12 if you go to any village of Malir,
09:14 there, girls education is more than boys,
09:16 - wow,
09:18 - and there, there are CSS officers,
09:20 engineers,
09:22 buses run from Karachi University to NIT University,
09:24 - wow,
09:26 - this is our success,
09:28 and this is called model development,
09:30 and this is not just about feeding,
09:32 but also teaching how to catch fish,
09:34 - wow,
09:36 and again, those who are watching,
09:38 you have said a general thing,
09:40 that strengthen the hands,
09:42 but how do we explain this to them,
09:44 that why hands,
09:46 and there is no doubt,
09:48 many institutions are doing a good job,
09:50 but what is the importance of hands,
09:52 in our society,
09:54 regarding the current issues of Pakistan,
09:56 if you can explain this,
09:58 - yes,
10:00 I would like to say,
10:02 that hands are different,
10:04 in two ways,
10:06 one is that we work in remote areas,
10:08 - there is no doubt,
10:10 - we give charity,
10:12 and we give charity,
10:14 and this is my challenge,
10:16 there are very few institutions,
10:18 which are seen in remote areas,
10:20 and most of the people think,
10:22 that they can work in cities,
10:24 on the roads,
10:26 so there is a guarantee,
10:28 that we reach the right people,
10:30 this is the first thing,
10:32 second thing is that we have a mechanism
10:34 for Zakat, Sharia compliance,
10:36 it is written,
10:38 and that document is also on our website,
10:40 and if anyone wants to audit us,
10:42 even from the perspective of Sharia,
10:44 apart from financial audit,
10:46 they can come and see,
10:48 we have two audits,
10:50 the largest audits,
10:52 and Sharia compliance audits,
10:54 like Alham Sharia,
10:56 which is a registered organization,
10:58 they audit us,
11:00 - I have personally seen,
11:02 some projects of hands,
11:04 I can give you my testimony,
11:06 I have been to more than one of their events,
11:08 and it is very extensive,
11:10 - No doubt,
11:12 - from villages to interiors,
11:14 - Yes,
11:16 we also have a coincidence,
11:18 you have been with hands for 30 years,
11:20 - Yes,
11:22 - it is a sign of your self confidence,
11:24 - Yes,
11:26 - and the motivation,
11:28 that I have got,
11:30 that is why I have been in the same institution for 30 years,
11:32 and despite living in America and England,
11:34 I have not said,
11:36 - You have to work here,
11:38 - I have to serve this earth,
11:40 and I have to return the favor,
11:42 - Great,
11:44 - Sir thank you very much,
11:46 - We would like to say,
11:48 - Strengthen the hands,
11:50 - So that,
11:52 - we can work together,
11:54 - and make an effort,
11:56 - in the same way,
11:58 - Thank you for your time,
12:00 - You can watch all the details,
12:02 - on their television screens,
12:04 - We send you off with a lot of prayers,
12:06 - and we send you off with a lot of applause,
12:08 - Thank you so much,
12:10 - Thank you sir,
12:12 - We will be back after the break,
