00:03 Good evening, Kapuso!
00:05 I'm your Kuya Kim, who will give you trivia behind the trending news.
00:09 Today is an extra special day because there's an extra day in our calendar.
00:13 2024 is a leap year.
00:16 Why is there an extra day every 4 years?
00:19 [music]
00:23 On this day, Patricia celebrated her 6th birthday.
00:27 [cheers]
00:28 I repeat, it's her 6th birthday.
00:30 It's Patricia's birthday.
00:31 I'm a leap year baby.
00:33 My birthday is February 29, 2000.
00:35 My current age is 24.
00:37 But in leap year, I'm just 6 years old.
00:39 Because of her birthday, she only comes once every 4 years.
00:43 Patricia celebrates her birthday twice a year.
00:46 I'm already celebrating, but on March 1, I want to embrace being a February baby.
00:52 But March 1, my age increases.
00:55 Under the law, in the Civil Code, 365 days is the legal age.
00:59 In the years without February 29, your birthday is March 1.
01:02 They will still age normally.
01:03 So, whatever rights you achieve when you're 18, you'll still get 18 years.
01:08 [music]
01:10 I can see myself as a unique person because when someone asks about my birthday,
01:14 they'll realize that, "Oh, you're a leap year. You're the only one I know like that."
01:18 And because there's only February 29 in the calendar, Patricia made sure that this day is special.
01:23 I'll celebrate four times.
01:25 For the past four years, I haven't had a birthday.
01:28 My wish for my birthday is I find happiness in what I'm doing and more travels to come.
01:33 [music]
01:38 Kuya Kim, why are you only one day late?
01:41 Kuya, it's leap year.
01:42 Kuya Kim, what's up?
01:43 Leap years happen to align or synchronize our calendar with the astronomical year.
01:48 A complete revolution of the Earth in the sun takes 365.25 days.
01:53 The extra .25 days every year when combined within four years,
01:58 makes a whole day or what's called a leap day.
02:01 Many people are attached to the leap day.
02:03 In the United Kingdom, it's a tradition for women to propose to their partners every February 29.
02:08 In Scotland, there's a belief that the women who are born on February 29 will be pregnant.
02:13 [music]
02:14 The Greeks avoid getting married during the leap year
02:17 because they believe that the married couple will be able to go home separately.
02:19 There's another country in Asia that believes that the leap day is bad luck.
02:23 But they have a counter to this.
02:25 [music]
02:30 For the Taiwanese, leap year is bad luck for the elderly.
02:34 That's why during the leap day or February 29,
02:36 the married women will go home to cook pig trotter noodles for their parents.
02:43 They believe that it will bring good fortune and a long life for them.
02:48 For more trivia, tweet or comment #KuyaKim.
02:54 Always remember, what's important is what's known.
02:57 I'm Kuya Kim and I'll answer you 24/7.
