00:00 Philippine Trade Training Center, 37th anniversary,
00:03 we will talk with DTI Philippine Trade Training Center Executive Director, Nelly Dillera.
00:10 Ma'am Nelly, good afternoon and welcome to Pagong Pilipinas.
00:14 Thank you, good afternoon to you too and thank you for giving us the opportunity to promote
00:20 not only our anniversary but more importantly, a project for the furniture industry.
00:26 We're very excited to hear all about it.
00:29 But this is where your celebration of the 37th anniversary of the Philippine Trade Training Center started.
00:34 Can you share with us some of the activities that happened yesterday
00:38 and what are the activities that are happening today for this celebration?
00:42 Okay, it's our third day now and what we're doing is really just for the staff.
00:48 We had a simple one, there's a mass, there's a Zumba, there's just simple games like that.
00:53 But on the previous two days, we were able to bring our enterprises to display their products.
01:00 And at the same time, since we are a training institution, we gave a series of training.
01:05 Our target is three types.
01:07 First, for young entrepreneurs, youth.
01:10 Second, for the creative industry.
01:12 So we covered different types of domains.
01:14 And the third training is to strengthen our exporters, their business.
01:20 So ma'am, what is the theme of your anniversary this year
01:23 and what do you think should be the focus, especially for our MSMEs?
01:29 Okay, Forging Global Futures.
01:32 Because what we're talking about now is technology, innovation, artificial intelligence, and all that.
01:39 But what's really important is what we're saying, the people.
01:43 But it's also important to give people the ability to use the technologies that we're talking about.
01:50 And to be more effective in the modern business world,
01:55 what are the necessary tools that you think MSMEs need in this time?
02:03 I also want to segue it.
02:05 One activity that we're doing now, Ms. Ninia, is the Obra Design Masterclass.
02:11 We have 60 scholars here in Metro Manila, Pampanga, and Cebu
02:17 who will graduate and will show their output, their prototypes, sample products,
02:23 for the Philippine International Furniture Show, March 7-9 here at SMX.
02:29 Because sometimes when we say "Furniture made by Filipinos,"
02:33 it's actually a sculpture.
02:35 It's like a mirror, an artwork.
02:38 And sometimes the lighting that we see in hotels,
02:41 because the people who buy from them are hotels, big constructions,
02:46 when we see it, it's like a flower that's glowing on the ceiling, that kind of thing.
02:51 So it's really very amazing to see the output of our enterprises.
02:56 So what we're looking at for them is their skill, they'll learn how to do business,
03:01 and at the same time, they'll level up their skills and competencies as far as technical,
03:07 and even what we call critical thinking, creative design,
03:12 so that we can build, particularly the industry of furniture, that's what we really want to focus on.
03:18 So many of our MSMEs are facing different challenges in their search for a life or business.
03:25 What do you think is their main need now when it comes to running their business,
03:31 aside from skills, of course, there should be a goal,
03:35 and there should be a way, and talent.
03:37 Yes, that's right.
03:39 The focus of the Department of Trade and Industry is really access to training.
03:43 We'll give them the skills,
03:45 they can give it to them, maybe it's already with them,
03:47 or they've learned it from other government agencies like TESDA,
03:51 but when they have the skills, they can go to DTI,
03:53 because we'll teach them how to use that skill to earn money, to monetize.
03:59 So access to training, access to finance,
04:01 that's also included in the program that DTI is providing through the Small Business Corporation,
04:07 access to market, because our citizens also need to introduce their products to the market.
04:13 And what's good about access to market is that they can also listen to what the consumers want,
04:21 because their products should be market-driven.
04:25 So like what we're doing,
04:27 we're helping the furniture industry now,
04:31 there will be an international furniture show,
04:35 where 60 of our graduates will feature their sample products.
04:41 And there will be about 200 or more than 200 furniture makers and manufacturers throughout the world,
04:47 who will be joining here,
04:49 and the output of our scholars will be highlighted in the Obra Design Masterclass.
04:53 Is this free? If I want to go to SMX, this is next weekend, right?
04:59 Yes.
05:00 This Obra.
05:01 Yes.
05:02 Is there an entrance fee?
05:03 I'm not sure about that.
05:06 But you can go.
05:07 Because there's a thing, you need to register first.
05:10 Yes.
05:11 Just wait, maybe we'll put it on our website or on our Facebook account,
05:15 what's the link where you can register,
05:18 and you'll be able to see in advance who will be featured by the companies in the said furniture show.
05:24 It's an asequent, we need to go there.
05:26 And ma'am, next week, look forward to the Obra.
05:30 I'm excited to see the finished products of your scholars.
05:34 Yes.
05:35 Can you imagine you trained them for, how was the training like for the 60 scholars?
05:39 And how did you choose them?
05:41 Okay.
05:42 The selection, because this is a design masterclass,
05:45 we call it Obra Design Masterclass.
05:47 So, graduates of interior design, graduates of industrial design,
05:53 so they already have a background because this is a master level.
05:56 They're already graduates.
05:57 Yes.
05:58 So, what we taught was the material selection, right?
06:00 The combination, I saw your dress, the combination of the weaves is beautiful, right?
06:05 Sometimes the combination of aluminum, metal, wood, rattan, those kinds of things.
06:10 So, those are included in what we taught.
06:12 Of course, the creative thinking.
06:14 Because our target here in Obra Design Masterclass is to develop a new breed of designers
06:20 because the strength of the Philippines is on the design.
06:25 The original design and the flawless design of our products
06:30 because of the tradition, the connection, right?
06:33 The tradition of carvers, the tradition of weavers, of upholstery, even the weaving designs.
06:42 Solihiya is very popular now, ma'am, from the chairs.
06:46 At first, that was the only thing.
06:48 But now, even in clothes, even in bags, you can see the Solihiya weave
06:53 that I used to know, only in furniture.
06:56 But sometimes, ma'am, for example, this is beautiful, made in the Philippines,
06:59 but some don't like it.
07:01 For example, they want a material that's stronger, that could withstand the weather conditions,
07:08 something that you can put outside or inside.
07:12 Is that also part of this training?
07:15 Yes, that's included because it also includes sustainability and innovation.
07:22 For example, what are rust-proof, what are the weatherproof classes.
07:29 So, that's included.
07:30 What's good about this is that there are a lot of technologies, a lot of equipment,
07:35 and a lot of tools that can be used to make the production of our manufacturers and even designers efficient.
07:43 So, ma'am, the upholstery and upholstery of youth is one of the priorities of the government.
07:49 With your expertise and assistance, what can we share and teach our young entrepreneurs today?
07:56 We also have what we call a Young Entrepreneurs Training or Program.
08:03 What we really focus on here is the youth.
08:05 So, our challenge to them is to use what is existing, what skills we have,
08:11 and capitalize on that so that we can monetize that.
08:15 So, our training actually starts from ideation until registration of their product.
08:22 And it covers training, particularly PTTC.
08:26 It can be in marketing, but we always emphasize that even before you market your product,
08:31 you need to make sure that the product is marketable because otherwise, it's hard to move.
08:36 So, the quality, we include that.
08:39 Financial literacy is important for a businessman.
08:42 The operations are different.
08:43 There may be compliance requirements, especially if we're selling abroad.
08:47 They have compliance requirements that they need to learn.
08:51 I have a question.
08:52 What if he's just creative?
08:54 He's not good at designing, he doesn't have money, he doesn't have resources, what can he do?
09:03 He can also train and partner with those who can provide the materials that he needs,
09:08 those who are in his mind.
09:10 Yes, that's a good question, Asek.
09:11 Because in the Obra Masterclass, designers, you're right.
09:15 What we did was we looked for a partner company
09:18 because partner companies already have tools, equipment, and tools.
09:22 So, now, the manufacturer and the designer are discussing how to execute.
09:27 Their collaboration is great because they're saying, for example, the manufacturers are established.
09:32 We can't combine this material, that kind of thing.
09:37 Your design can be like this, based on our experience in the market.
09:41 So, their collaboration is great.
09:43 So, what we expect here is that the graduates,
09:46 maybe, eventually, although there are some of them who are family members of manufacturers,
09:52 but maybe the furniture companies that are looking for designers,
09:58 this is now a pool that you can check.
10:00 We will promote their names, their outputs, we will display them.
10:06 There's an extension in PTTC for those who can't make it to SMX.
10:10 You will have the chance of talking also to the artists, like mid-artists.
10:14 Oh, that's really wonderful.
10:16 Hopefully, in the future, I can also collaborate with you guys in a bell fabric.
10:21 You said weavers because our weave woven fabric can also be used as furniture.
10:26 Yes.
10:27 And it looks different.
10:29 So, just as a last message to our fellow countrymen who are watching us now.
10:35 Okay. Again, thank you very much for the opportunity.
10:38 This is what we call our consumers.
10:41 It can be individual consumers, hotels, big companies.
10:46 If you're looking for products, particularly, our focus is on furniture now,
10:50 please visit the Furniture International Show and let's see the Filipino craftsmen.
10:56 And to the manufacturers who are looking for in-house designers,
11:02 check our Obra Design Masterclass Scholars.
11:06 They can help you.
11:08 Thank you very much, ma'am.
11:11 It's your time now. DTI Philippine Trade Training Center Executive Director, Ned Rivera.
11:16 Thank you very much, ma'am.
11:18 Thank you very much, Mark.
