00:00 We've got a housing crisis in this country where more and more people are unable to afford their rents or their mortgages
00:06 and we also have a real lack of affordable housing as well.
00:09 So we need to take action to ensure that people's rents are affordable
00:13 and we also need to ensure that the new housing that's being built is actually affordable for people's needs.
00:18 And that's why we've put forward a Right Homes, Right Place, Right Price charter
00:23 that means people will be able to live in their own communities
00:26 and that developers should have to invest in the infrastructure, the local services that people need when new homes are built.
00:32 Rent controls are not a silver bullet but we do believe that they're part of the solution
00:37 to give local councils the power to control rents in areas where they're overheated
00:42 such as where I live and I'm standing to be an MP in Bristol.
00:46 But alongside that it's also about creating many more social homes
00:51 that includes building but also buying from the market and renovating.
00:56 There's lots of work that Green councillors where we're in administration or opposition
01:00 are already doing on councils to use the powers that councils already have on that
01:05 but we want to give more powers from national government
01:08 so that we can really speed up the process of tackling the housing crisis.
