00:00 In a bid to bolster the maritime security and foster interoperability, Coast Guard personnel
00:08 from India, the Maldives and Sri Lanka commenced a four-day trilateral exercise aimed at addressing
00:14 emerging maritime challenges in the Indian Ocean region.
00:19 The exercise, named Dosti 16, is being conducted from 22 February to 25 February and it involves
00:27 participation from Indian Coast Guard ships Samarth and Abhinav, along with Sri Lanka
00:32 naval vessels Samudra.
00:33 Bangladesh is also partaking in the exercise as an observer.
00:37 As part of the trilateral engagement, the Indian Coast Guard helicopter ICGS Dornier
00:42 is actively involved too.
00:44 Sri Lanka has articulated the objective of Dosti as enhancing cooperation, fostering
00:49 friendship, enhancing mutual operation capability and promoting interoperability among the Coast
00:54 Guard personnel of the three nations.
00:57 Meanwhile, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has extended a cordial reception to
01:02 ADGS Paramesh, Additional Director General of the Indian Coast Guard upon his arrival
01:07 at the Velana International Airport.
01:10 Commanding officer of the Indian Coast Guard ship held discussion with Commandant MNDF
01:14 Coast Guard to explore avenues for collaborative engagements.
01:18 During the exercise, the Indian Coast Guard vessel was also slated to partake in series
01:23 of activities and engage in joint sea operations with their Sri Lankan and Maldivian counterparts.
01:29 This 16th edition of the Indian-Maldives-Sri Lanka Trilateral Exercise, as described by
01:34 the Indian Mission in the Maldives, aims to foster regional synergy to enhance maritime
01:39 security and interoperability.
01:41 However, one must note that this exercise comes amid strained ties between India and
01:46 Maldives.
01:47 India is suspicious of China's increasing presence in the Indian Ocean and its influence
01:51 in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, which are strategically placed halfway along to the key east-west
01:57 international shipping route.
01:59 And so the relation between Mala and New Delhi have chilled since pro-China President Mohd
02:04 Mui Zu won the election last year.
02:06 Mui Zu had asked India to withdraw 89 security personnel based in the Maldives by March 15.
02:12 Yet, this military exercise has commenced, which is a good sign.
02:16 The 2016 military exercise underscored the collective commitment of India, Maldives and
02:21 Sri Lanka towards ensuring maritime security and stability in the Indian Ocean region.
02:26 It signifies a proactive approach to address evolving challenges and promote regional cooperation
02:32 in maritime domains for the greater benefit of all stakeholders involved.
