Kilalanin ang mga Asian English Olympics 2024 delegates mula sa Philippine Science High School (PSHS)
Transcript
00:00 Let's meet the champions and the people of our country who showed their strength
00:06 after the Asian English Olympics 2024 that was held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
00:13 But before that, let's watch this.
00:16 The joy of victory is different from the expectations we have.
00:23 Just like the Filipino athletes who felt the same way in the Asian English Olympics 2024 in February,
00:30 after they became the champions.
00:33 Once again, I commend the students of the Philippine Science High School of PISAI
00:37 for their talent and speech, storytelling, spelling, scrabble, debate, newscasting, radio drama,
00:46 and story writing in the Asian English Olympics or AEO
00:51 where they were named institutional champions.
00:55 The Asian English Olympics is one of the famous international English competitions in Asia
01:01 where it gives opportunities to enhance the ability and cooperation of young people in Asia.
01:09 Wow, the kids are really good.
01:16 We have with us, Sir Daryl Wison, and the delegates from the Philippine Science High School.
01:21 Good morning and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
01:24 Say hi to our co-audience.
01:26 Good morning.
01:27 Kindly introduce yourselves.
01:29 Let's introduce our students and what category they joined and where they won in Indonesia.
01:37 Because there are different categories.
01:39 Hi, I'm Jared. I did Spelling Bee.
01:44 Hi, Jared. And then we have?
01:47 Hi, I'm Dion from Spelling Bee.
01:50 Dion, Spelling Bee.
01:52 Hi, I'm Mateo from Storytelling.
01:56 Storytelling.
01:58 Hi, I'm Rian from Speech.
02:01 Congratulations to you and to their coach, Sir Daryl.
02:07 Sir Daryl, please tell us about the Asian English Olympics 2024.
02:12 You mentioned the categories, but who are the competitors here?
02:17 The Asian English Olympics is held every year.
02:20 Okay.
02:21 And it is joined by different countries, like the Philippines, Malaysia.
02:27 Last year, there was Hong Kong, Singapore, and other countries.
02:34 Although most of them are Indonesia and Malaysia, because it is held in Indonesia.
02:39 I heard that the competitors are college students.
02:42 Yes, and these are junior high school students.
02:46 Grade 10 and grade 11.
02:48 Of course, when you compare, they are different and smart.
02:51 They are the best students in the whole Philippines.
02:54 Of course, this is an international competition.
02:58 So how does it feel like you gaining this achievement?
03:01 Maybe let's start with Rian.
03:04 We are very happy with this achievement because we are in a science high school.
03:10 And then we compete in the humanities field.
03:13 So it is a great privilege and we are thankful to win.
03:19 And the opportunity to compete and show Asia what the Philippines can do.
03:24 How about you, Matteo?
03:26 For me, it feels very unexpected but in a good way.
03:30 Because before I joined this, I really didn't have any experience with anything like storytelling.
03:35 I don't have any theater or improv experience.
03:37 So it's unexpected but in a way that makes me happy because I didn't expect to win.
03:42 What is the mechanics of storytelling? I'm interested. What did you do?
03:46 The way it works is that they give you the start of a story.
03:50 So for example, one of the prompts in the contest was someone finds a magic eraser.
03:55 And during a math test, it starts to speak to them.
03:57 And then from there, you have to continue on with the story.
04:00 And you have five minutes to think of how the story is going to end.
04:03 That's amazing.
04:04 And you have five minutes to record.
04:05 Your brain should be fast.
04:06 Yes.
04:07 In the speech, what did you do?
04:09 In the speech, what did you do?
04:10 It's the same.
04:11 They just said the prompt and then we have to make an impromptu speech about it.
04:16 Okay. And what is the topic that you were asked to do?
04:20 The first impromptu is if I were to have a superpower.
04:24 What is that superpower?
04:27 And then under 30 seconds, you have to make a two-minute speech.
04:30 What did you answer? It's like a beauty contest.
04:33 I said I want the power to know how my friends are feeling so I can communicate well with them.
04:42 Okay. And then in round two, what is it?
04:45 Round two is about I think debate and critical thinking.
04:54 Okay. So how many rounds is that?
04:57 Five rounds.
04:58 Five rounds. Your brain is really fast.
05:02 Yes. Maybe you're afraid of how many hours you'll sleep because you're really being chased by the mob and the soldiers.
05:10 What are the preparations?
05:12 We usually start every year with a screening.
05:17 We have a screening and we have students who want to join and sign up.
05:22 And then from there, we usually choose three or as many as the required number of contestants of the AEO.
05:30 And then after that, on Wednesday, because Wednesday is their extracurricular day,
05:34 they practice after they get home.
05:36 And when they arrive in Indonesia, in a hotel, they practice.
05:42 Like last year, we practiced in a newscasting.
05:44 We practiced early in the morning. I woke up the kids so they can practice.
05:48 So you can already report.
05:50 Jared and Dion, tell us your experience with Spelling Bee.
05:53 What is the process you went through?
05:56 In Spelling Bee, there are five rounds and there are two preliminaries.
06:02 The first round is written and oral.
06:06 So we take a 50-word test and then after those written and oral, we move on to the next categories which are more fun.
06:14 There is a round where we have three clues where we are given the meaning of the word.
06:20 And then if we don't get that, we go on to the missing letters where we are given some letters of the word.
06:29 And then finally, there's the pronunciation. Every clue gives points.
06:32 And it's a good way to really level up.
06:36 And then until the finals where we have to orally pronounce.
06:40 I've seen that in movies, "Give me the origin of the word."
06:43 Yes, yes.
06:45 It's the same in Spelling Bee.
06:46 But is there a part where you have to spell it backwards?
06:49 Is there?
06:50 No, right?
06:51 It's harder.
06:52 I've seen it in the US.
06:53 It's so hard.
06:55 And is there a word that's the hardest for you to learn?
07:00 Well, we had the same general experience.
07:03 Are you teammates or are you from different categories?
07:06 We're on different teams.
07:08 But we ended up making it to the finals.
07:10 So before all of the spelling rounds, they gave us in an orientation, basically a document containing all the spelling words.
07:19 And there were like a thousand of them.
07:21 Oh, so you scanned those words prior.
07:25 So you can memorize them.
07:27 Wow, okay.
07:28 What's the hardest word that you were given to spell? Do you remember?
07:32 Well, in the finals, they gave me the word "tsotski."
07:37 That's a hard word.
07:38 What's that? What's that word?
07:40 It's like a souvenir.
07:42 Oh, okay.
07:43 And there's like, I forgot the spelling.
07:45 That's so hard.
07:47 Did you get anything?
07:48 No.
07:49 No?
07:51 That's a difficult round.
07:53 Sir Dario, I'll ask you again.
07:54 How are the supports of the Philippine Science High School to our delegates?
07:59 The support of the Philippine Science High School was good.
08:04 First of all, to our Director, Sir Lorenz Madriaga.
08:07 Hello, good morning.
08:08 To our CID Chief, Sir Efren.
08:10 And to our budget, to Ma'am Beth.
08:13 They are our body here to make this possible.
08:17 And of course, I'll greet them.
08:20 Please be open.
08:22 To our other supporters, other coaches,
08:26 Ma'am Joanna is our unit head.
08:30 Our coaching coordinator is Ma'am Sheila.
08:32 And other coaches, Ma'am Kelly, Ma'am Karen, Sir Mark, Sir Edge, Sir Jez, Ma'am Sarah, Sir Alan, and Sir Edwin.
08:40 So this is a team effort.
08:42 So it's not just one person, but it's a team effort.
08:46 And of course, to the parents who supported their children, thank you very much.
08:52 For sure, their parents are very proud.
08:55 Rian, you said earlier that this is a humanities course.
08:59 Because it's known as science, right?
09:02 But they are also excelling in humanities.
09:05 But I wonder, what are your plans when you go to college?
09:09 What are you thinking about in your componing course?
09:12 Me? Computer Engineering.
09:15 Future Computer Engineer, Sir Mateo.
09:18 For me, I want to do Computer Science.
09:20 Computer Science.
09:22 Our spelling bee champions.
09:25 I'm also pursuing Computer Science.
09:28 And then?
09:30 I plan to take up Food Chemistry.
09:33 These kids are so smart.
09:35 I'm planning to go with Mechanical Engineering.
09:39 Why not?
09:40 Because I love mechanics of the game.
09:42 Spell Engineering.
09:44 It's E-N-G-I-N-E-R-I-N-G with a capital E.
09:49 Complete the story of a Mechanical Engineer who went to Nursing.
09:54 I was this young boy walking the streets of Visayas Avenue
09:58 when I saw this little man telling me...
10:02 That's it.
10:03 Anyway, what are your plans for those who are interested in joining
10:08 the prestigious competitions like the Asian and Olympic Star Trial Korean?
10:14 My speech is to step out of your comfort zone.
10:20 I wish you guys would step out of your comfort zone and try joining this competition.
10:26 Matayo?
10:27 I would say, my advice is to try and have fun with the contest.
10:32 Don't get too caught up in the scores because if you have fun,
10:35 even if you don't win, you'll still walk away happy.
10:38 That's a great advice.
10:39 How are you planning to be champions?
10:42 If I would impart advice, I believe that be passionate in what you love.
10:47 Because even if you love something, all the efforts that you put into it
10:51 will become experiences that will put you among those ranks.
10:57 I'd like to end with don't give up on your dreams.
11:02 Never give up.
11:03 Because last year, I tried to join the AEO and I got rejected.
11:08 But this year, I managed to pass.
11:10 Great!
11:11 You got the champion.
11:13 So I'd like to tell all of you out there, you can do it too.
11:17 Go out there, show them what we've got.
11:21 It's your dad's secret to be a good student.
11:26 And it's really different.
11:27 His students are holding their dads' hands.
11:30 We need to be dedicated in teaching.
11:34 So to my fellow teachers, I would also like to invite you to encourage your students
11:38 to join AEO and other international competitions.
11:41 Let's just be patient with our administrators and parents
11:45 so we know if we can send our children, our students, to these competitions.
11:53 I'm proud that the achievements of our fellow students from PISAI are very inspiring.
11:59 I hope that more children will be inspired by you.
12:02 Good luck with your future plans.
12:04 And again, congratulations.
12:06 These children are really a Philippine pride.
12:10 Good luck with your plans in the future.
12:13 Again, we are here with Rian, Jared, Dion, Mateo, and of course, Sir Daryl.
12:19 Thank you very much.
