Is An Electric Hot Hatch With 322 HP , New Cupra Born VZ 2024

Cupra, which left the Volkswagen Group's SEAT brand in 2018, introduces its first electric performance vehicle. The sporty derivative is based on the Born compact model and gets the suffix "VZ", which is short for the Spanish word "veloz", meaning "fast". The brand's first EV gets a healthy power boost and other upgrades.

The rear-wheel-drive electric hot hatch uses an upgraded engine that delivers 322 horsepower and a whopping 402 pound-feet (545 Newton-meters) of instantaneous torque. These output figures represent a massive increase of 94 hp and 235 Nm (173 lb-ft) over the previous most powerful version of the Cupra Born. Thanks to the newly unlocked electric power, the VZ model shaves a full second off the sprint to 100 km/h, which now takes 5.7 seconds. Top speed increased by 25 mph (40 km/h) to 124 mph (200 km/h).

There's more to the Born VZ than just a more powerful e-motor, as Cupra also gives it a pair of custom 20-inch wheels, including a forged set with performance tires. The cooler alternative to the troubled SEAT brand has increased the net capacity of its battery pack by 2 kWh to 79 kWh, for an estimated range of 335 miles (570 kilometers). Steering is sharper and there are additional adjustments to the suspension for better handling, while the brakes feel more direct than before.

In terms of styling, Cupra offers the new Born VZ in this Dark Forest colour, or you can play it safe by getting the feisty electric hatchback in Midnight Black. The newly added “VZ” logo on the trunk lid has a dark chrome appearance, reminiscent of the “Cupra” lettering. Inside, there's a pair of body-hugging seats that aren't shared with smaller models. However, these bucket seats are already available in some performance cars with a combustion engine, including the Formentor VZ5 with an inline-five engine borrowed from Audi.

Cupra increased the screen size of the infotainment system by 0.9 inches to 12.9 inches for the top trim level Born. More important is the touch slider for adjusting the climate and volume as it finally lights up. Buyers can get an optional 10-speaker, 425-watt Sennheiser audio system for an additional fee. As standard, the VZ variant features paddle shifters mounted behind the steering wheel to select one of three energy recovery levels.

Born VZ will go on sale in Europe in the third quarter of the year. We should also see the equivalent Volkswagen version in 2024, the ID.3 GTX or the name the sporty electric hatchback will use. These two will compete in a rare segment that includes the MG4 XPower. The smaller Alpine A290 will soon join them.
