Volkswagen's EV comes to the European market with a new long-range battery option and built-in ChatGPT AI.
The ID.7 Tourer, the wagon version of VW's existing ID.7 sedan, promises all the cargo space and range a road enthusiast could need.
The big news is the introduction of a larger battery pack, as well as the additional cargo capacity that comes with the shooting brake rear end. We'll focus on that here first, because while the ID.7 wagon will only be offered in Europe and not North America, the new battery option will also appear on ID.7 sedans sold worldwide later this year.
The base ID.7 comes with a 77 kWh battery, which has been fitted to every ID.7 since launch, but spend a little more for the ID.7 Pro and you'll unlock a new 86 kWh power pack that VW predicts will be good . for 426 WLTP miles (685 km) between charges. VW hasn't released any numbers for the wagon with the smaller battery, but the current 77 kWh ID.7 sedan offers a respectable range of 383 WLTP miles (616 km).
To keep charging times generally the same between the two versions, the larger battery is capable of charging at 200 kW instead of 175 kW. This means a 10-80 percent fill needs 28 minutes in the cheaper car and a still reasonable 30 minutes in the Pro. Whichever version you choose, it will come equipped with a single 282 hp (286 PS) electric motor driving the rear wheels. We're still waiting for VW to release the more powerful dual-motor AWD ID.7s we know it's working on.
It's easy to think of the ID.7 as the electric counterpart of the new VW Passat, which comes with combustion, mild-hybrid and PHEV engine options but no pure electric option. But aside from power sources and price points (the ID is predictably more expensive), what sets them apart so far is that the ID.7 is only available as a sedan and the Passat as a Tourer. Now that both are available as wagons, they can be more directly compared.
VW says maximum cargo capacity is 1,714 liters (60.5 cu-ft) with the rear seats folded, compared to 1,586 liters (56 cu-ft) for the sedan. Even with the rear seats in place and the trunk loaded only to window level, Tourer buyers still benefit from the 73-litre (2.6 cu-ft) tune-up. The 605-litre (21.4 cu-ft) trunk is 35 liters (1.2 cu-ft) larger than that of the BMW i5. If that seems like a lot of space and you think your stuff will roll all over the car while in motion, VW dealers will sell trays and dividers to keep it in place.
