00:00 More deaths in Gaza as the Israeli military is ordered to prepare a civilian evacuation
00:06 plan for Rafa.
00:11 Faced with Russia, security is set to dominate Finland's run-off presidential election on
00:16 Sunday.
00:24 Israel's Prime Minister has ordered the military to prepare a civilian evacuation plan for
00:29 Rafa as it plans to invade the city which Israel claims is Hamas' last stronghold.
00:37 The announcement comes after more than 20 people were killed in strikes on central Gaza
00:42 and Rafa.
00:43 Meanwhile, criticism of the Israeli offensive in Gaza is also growing, with President Biden
00:49 saying that the military campaign is "over the top".
00:53 The UN World Food Programme's director in Palestine said on Friday that famine could
00:58 hit Gaza as early as May.
01:01 The lack of food has put half the population at risk of famine, with the situation worse
01:06 in the north which is almost inaccessible to aid convoys.
01:11 The Israeli army has also released footage of what it says are airstrikes against Hamas
01:16 targets that killed 15 militants in Khan Younis.
01:24 Russia and Ukraine have conducted a new prisoner exchange.
01:27 A hundred soldiers from each side have been able to return home.
01:32 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that most of the returning prisoners of war
01:37 defended Mariupol, adding that over 3,100 Ukrainians have been released from Russian
01:44 captivity.
01:47 Joy was also among Russian soldiers transported to Moscow for treatment and rehabilitation
01:53 in medical institutions.
01:55 Once again, the United Arab Emirates acted as an intermediary.
02:00 The exchange took place as Russia continued to pummel Ukraine with long-range strikes.
02:12 Ukraine President's major military shake-up is "a normal change" for a state engaged
02:18 in a protracted war, says the Institute for the Study of War in its latest assessment,
02:23 as Russian forces recently advanced near Avdiivka amid continued positional fighting in this
02:30 area of the front.
02:33 Geolocated footage published on 7 February indicates that Russian forces marginally advanced
02:39 in eastern Stepovo, although likely not within the past day.
02:46 Russian mill bloggers also claimed advances in northern Avdiivka up to Chistiakova Street
02:51 and the capture of a nearby section of a railway line, although the Institute for the Study
02:55 of War has not observed visual evidence of these claims.
02:59 The distance here is around 5 km.
03:03 And here in the middle is Hrushevskogo Street, Ukrainian forces' alleged main ground line
03:07 of communication which Russian forces are trying to cut.
03:16 Donald Trump has won Nevada's Republican caucuses, his third state victory in a row.
03:23 Trump was the only major candidate to compete in Nevada.
03:26 In his victory speech, Trump said he was eager to win in his next stop, South Carolina, the
03:32 home state of his main rival Nikki Haley.
03:35 Trump remains popular in the deeply conservative state, but Haley, who won two elections as
03:40 South Carolina's governor, is hoping her local roots will give her a competitive edge.
03:50 Poland has joined the so-called Military Schengen Agreement, a European initiative aimed at
03:54 streamlining troop mobility among participating states.
03:58 The agreement's also been signed by Germany and the Netherlands and is both a gesture
04:02 of solidarity with Ukraine and a concrete step towards better European security.
04:06 The experience of what's happening in Ukraine from the full-scale war, how important it is
04:12 to move quickly to the allied forces, has made us sign an agreement that facilitates
04:19 the mobility of Polish troops, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Kingdom of the Netherlands
04:24 on the territories of our countries.
04:26 It's impossible to go indifferently to what the Ukrainians have experienced.
04:31 If we want to have the strength of the alliance, the mobility of the alliance is the most important thing.
04:35 The mobility of our armies between each other and for each other.
04:39 Daphne Bergsmer, the Dutch ambassador to Poland, stressed that military mobility is central
04:46 to addressing growing geopolitical challenges.
04:49 This is the next step in integration and with the growing geopolitical challenges that we
04:58 see in the world, it has become even more important that there is fast military mobility
05:05 that there are smooth logistics.
05:07 We call it a harmonised military corridor, but that's why we thought this is essential.
05:14 It's the first of its kind and we are very proud that we, as three countries, have been
05:21 able to achieve it.
05:22 All our three countries are very actively supporting Ukraine.
05:28 This is only a small example, but it is also for us, it's a symbol of how we are supporting
05:36 Ukraine and in that sense also are contributing to defending Europe.
05:41 Experts admit that such initiatives are legitimate and necessary and that in the case of the
05:48 need for the defence of the continent, there can be no obstacles.
05:52 As a mechanism allowing quick and effective transfer of forces, transfer of hardware,
06:00 equipment, transfer of ammunition, any mechanism that removes borders and constraints which
06:08 hamper rapid military deployment is simply necessary.
06:13 Initiatives such as military Schengen are important for Poland, a neighbour of Russia
06:18 and Belarus, firstly for the security reason, but secondly also in terms of its relations
06:24 within the EU.
06:25 Magdalena Hrdovnik for Euronews from Warsaw.
06:28 Despite concessions from the European Commission, farmers have continued to demonstrate in Italy.
06:41 A week of protests reached its peak on Friday with a mass rally on the outskirts of Rome.
06:47 Farmers are united in their anger over low incomes but are divided on how to proceed.
07:00 Our Euronews Italy correspondent reports.
07:03 It's clear that the movement is very much divided within itself with different fronts
07:11 and different groups wanting different things.
07:13 But what is clear is that all these actions aim to push the government to listen to what
07:21 these farmers have to say and to answer their requests.
07:26 And in fact, they also said that they won't stop until they get what they want.
07:32 Giorgia Orlandi for Euronews in Rome.
07:38 Thousands of people were left without heating as a major pipeline bringing hot water from
07:44 a geothermal plant was overrun by lava in the Rijksdjins peninsula in Iceland.
07:51 Whilst the air temperature outside is minus four degrees, people have rushed to buy electric
07:57 heaters and heater fans as houses in Iceland are usually heated with geothermal water.
08:03 We are very concerned about the heaters.
08:06 We don't have more than one window open in the sky.
08:11 We don't have cars in the heating plants.
08:14 We are concerned about the heaters and we hope that this will be fixed tomorrow.
08:21 This is now the third time in less than two months that a volcano in southwestern Iceland
08:28 has erupted, threatening a nearby community.
08:32 Some have even had to evacuate.
08:34 Faced with Russia, security is set to dominate the runoff votes for Finland's next president
08:50 on Sunday.
08:51 The candidates are former center-right Prime Minister Alexander Störb and ex-Foreign Minister
08:58 Pekka Havisto of the Greens.
09:00 Both call for Finland, which recently joined NATO, to take a tough stance against Russia.
09:05 Störb leads the polls, but Havisto is gaining ground.
09:08 Some people will make their minds up on Saturday, perhaps even Sunday, on the election day.
09:13 So they are campaigning very actively to the end, but it's unlikely that any new openings,
09:18 things will be visible in the last few days.
09:22 What makes the situation exciting is that the gap between them has been narrowing.
09:27 The candidates of the far-right Finns party and the liberal centre party were eliminated
09:32 in the first round.
09:34 Their voters, up to 20% of the electorate, could be crucial in deciding the final outcome.
09:39 The European Union will support Mauritania with 210 million euros to combat human trafficking
09:53 by preventing migrant boats from making the dangerous Atlantic crossing between West Africa
09:58 and Europe.
09:58 The European Commission president and the Prime Minister of Spain went to the Mauritanian
10:03 capital, Nouakchott, to make the announcement.
10:05 We are witnessing the fall of democratic governments, rise of terrorist attacks,
10:13 spike in refugees and internally displaced people, and the worsening of an already acute
10:22 food security crisis.
10:24 So we need to work together and with a comprehensive strategy
10:28 if we want to address these challenges successfully.
10:32 Mauritania shelters 150,000 of Mali's refugees
10:39 and is evolving into both a transit and destination for migrants.
10:48 Checking in to go sightseeing in North Korea.
10:51 This group of Russian tourists have become the likely first visitors to enter the country
10:56 since the COVID-19 pandemic.
10:58 The group will be visiting the capital, Pyongyang, and the Tower of Juche Idea,
11:02 named after North Korea's guiding philosophy of self-reliance.
11:06 They will then go on to the Masik Pass on the east coast,
11:09 where the country's most modern ski resort is located.
11:12 (In Russian)
11:13 The tour underscores deepening cooperation between the two countries,
11:36 following last year's meeting between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un
11:40 and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Russia's Far East.
